Seibon Carbon Fiber fenders - painted? part 1

Seibon Carbon Fiber fenders - painted?
Does anyone have pictures of Seibon carbon fiber fenders that are painted? I have only seen two cars with them, both unpainted.

In some pictures, I like them. The line looks nice, like this.

In other pictures, they look really goofy:

I'm thinking it might be the carbon fiber messing with my head by not showing shadows very well.

I really like the little vent towards the rear, though

I am definately going to paint them, so I would like to see if I like how they look while painted. Pictures would be highly appreciated.

Sorry for stealing your pictures, xsblack :)

Thanks,
Brian

well.. personally i think that if paint it , probably going to make it more like fiber glass fender and that's all...unless custom mold it and have the body line matches perfectly with the fender...
WRblueX_Guy 11-12-2006 03:45 AM

I wouldn't really care if it was made out of FRP, fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum, etc. I'm buying fenders so they look wider/different than stock.
ANashTy 11-12-2006 10:36 AM

If you want them theyll look pretty much the same as when you paint other body parts whether theyre urethane, fiberglass, etc. If youre asking about painting it where the CF shows through somehow thatd be next to impossible.

Unless the CF ones are cheaper, id stick with the fiberglass/urethane.

That's exactly what I want ;)
I don't care if there are made of cardboard, I just want them to be painted white to match the car. If I buy them, it will be becauseof the design, not that they're carbon fiber.

The other fenders that I am thinking of are Chargespeed. I'm not sure what they're made out of, but my guess is fiberglass. They are pretty nice and 20mm wider than stock, but they don't look a whole lot different from stock.

What fenders do you know of that are made of poly?
AlxSti 11-12-2006 02:14 PM

they are 10mm wider, right? they look okay i guess.. but i wouldnt pay for em. fitment doesnt look that tight near the doors... but maybe they would look better once they are painted, ya know? i assume these are goin on a blue wrx?
mbiker97 11-12-2006 02:22 PM
fitment doesnt look that tight near the doors...
It looks like they didn't push the top of the fender in nearly enough, look at the gap to the hood. Fitting a front end is pretty difficult. It takes a lot of patience and time to get everything correct.
hornyturbo 11-12-2006 02:27 PM

paint it when it starts to turn yellow

Yup, 10mm. I'm thinking they will look much better painted.

They're going on a White WRX

i say go for it if you really want em.. have you found a good price for em yet? if not.. check out CVRMotorsports.com they have 5% off all SEIBON products & shipping is included in the price. Coupon code is "SeaSalt". I want to see pix if you get em!
thehollowrift 11-12-2006 03:45 PM

im beyond why anyone would buy cf fenders. the stock fender weighs maby 4.2 lbs..... Now if this is for aesthetic reasons that is entirely different. If you want the cf for appearance why would you paint it? And then if your getting it for the cf---- show it off........ If your buying this for a 'weight reducing mod' I would suggest going on a diet to loose 5 lbs... same effect...... and its free.

just my 02

but ps. I like the way cf doors look over fenders any day.... and weigh less too!!

Yup, CVR is where I would be getting them from. I PMed them and it would be $665 shipped. Thanks for the heads up.
sheepdog 11-12-2006 04:38 PM

I had a bad experience with CVR once, I ordered a CF hood and trunk for my GC8 and I never got them after 9 months. Then, I cancelled the order, and got a notification two days later that they were shipped. I just refused delivery, but it was irritating.

Also, as to "showing off" the carbon, on a white car I don't think it would look right anyways. I'd paint them, who cares what theyre made of?
AlxSti 11-12-2006 04:45 PM

i dunno.. white and carbon fiber can be pretty sexy.. here is a friends 350z

Like I said, they could be made out of marshmellows for all I care

Yes, I think front and rear carbon fiber doors look good, especially on my friend's White Evolution. I think they look good because the are somewhat symmetrical. I've seen carbon fiber doors on a two door Skyline, and thought it looked like ass. Just like how I think carbon fiber fenders look goofy. BUT, I'm not prepared to spend ~$3000 for an exterior mod.

I like the Seibon fenders because they are 10 mm wider than stock, and they have the vent.

As for painting carbon fiber....Imagine someone buying this hood, and painting it the color of their car.

Of course they didn't do it for weight reduction, they did it because the hood looks different than stock and they wanted it to still look clean.

That sucks. Did you talk to them about it the hood/trunk being in stock before ordering, or did you purchase it right off their website?

I participated in their group buy for an S203 style lip a little while back. The lips cam poorly packaged (in two plastic bags, no box  ). and some people got their lips bent in half. They were made of polyurethane, so they could mostly be put back to their orignal shape. Mine came in good shape, minus the ugly greyish black finish of the lip. Nothing a few sheets of sand paper and a can of bumper paint could not fix.

I also order my powerslot rotors from them for a price of about $100 cheaper than anywhere else, and they came fairly quickly.

If I get the fenders, I sure hope I have another good experience :o
sheepdog 11-12-2006 05:29 PM

They weren't in stock when I ordered them, but it was always "Theyll be here next week." Maybe I just got unlucky, who knows.

Good luck with the fenders man, make sure you post pics when theyre done.
AlxSti 11-12-2006 10:35 PM

i almost bought that cwII hood from cvr... till i found out it weighed more than the stock sti hood and aluminum disperses heat better. would of looked good painted though..
wrxdrftr2002 11-13-2006 01:32 AM

nice car man really clean.. wat rear lip is that? as for the fenders....keep em get a cf trunk hood and front lip and paint the roof black... ur car would me tits!!!! imo
WRblueX_Guy 11-13-2006 02:53 AM

Thanks.

Those are JDM STi style rear aprons.

I have painted one of carbon fiber hood's (blue). For me to paint it to match, it took so many coats to cover up the black and so could not see the carbon lines even though in some places it is visible even with a ton of paint. Might want to use primer. many cars I have seen don't you can tell they do a light coat to a darker coat. It will just looks dull with that little amount of paint. you are gonna need a pint of white.. at least it will make a quart mixed still really not enough it soaks in the gel coat it seems.
WRblueX_Guy 11-13-2006 04:04 AM

Hmm, I had no idea carbon fiber was that difficult to paint. I will probably talk to a painter ahead of time.

Thanks for the heads up :)
Mechie3 11-13-2006 11:55 AM

I think getting the CF fenders and painting them would be cool if you left the area behing the vent unpainted. It would make it stand out even more.
sidesleeper 11-13-2006 01:00 PM

I will be painting my seibon fenders...but i am leaving a portion unpainted.

That actually might be a great idea.

Funny, I just helped my friend install some Varis fenders on his Evolution with these carbon fiber air vents.

out of curiosity...how do carbon fibre/urethane/fibreglass fenders crumple?

nobody plans on getting in an accident, but should it happen, how do they stack up to regular fenders?

Carbon fiber either:

A: Is a fender-shaped spear
or
B: Shatters into many tiny spears
tekgnosis 11-13-2006 06:44 PM

lol...spear.

that's what i heard about early day hoods. the hoods now have some crumple technology built into them.

shattering might be decent, so long as they don't come in the cockpit, and provide some form of crumple zone.

Well my fenders are stuck at customs right now...hopefully they'll arrive soon and i'll have them test fitted and painted before december.

My car is Java black pearl.

Damn, if only your car were a lighter color. Oh well, I'll take what I can get.

But yeah, I'd really appreciate it if you can post back here when you get them on :)
sidesleeper 12-04-2006 07:01 PM

They just arrived 30mins ago...the qaulity is very good just like my hood. They seem really light weight but i'll have to compare it too the stockers.

I'm pretty sure you can have them painted for lighter colored cars...i've seen white cars with painted carbon parts...they just primer the shizzer out of them then paint.

so next is test fit then paint.
WRblueX_Guy 12-04-2006 09:35 PM

Well, considering that most of the O/P posts are of F/S items over the past year, his profile saying 350Z, and him swimming mostly in O/T, probably not well.
WRblueX_Guy 10-20-2009 06:24 PM

^ Haha good guess. Yeah, I never got the fenders. The WRX is long gone, and so it the 350Z.
