Questions regarding Legacy GT shift knob. part 1

Acho 10-12-2005 09:15 PM

Questions regarding Legacy GT shift knob.
I recently sold my momo knob in search of something more "leathery". Im currently using the stock knob, but ive been eyeing-up the legacy GT, which seems to be spoken of quite highly on these boards. Anyway, couple questions...

-Does the knob have a little ring for the stock WRX shift boot to clip in, like the stock one?

-Does anyone have pics of the knob installed on a WRX?

-Any general comments/reviews on this peice?

and finally, whats the prefered place to pick one of these up? I remember a forum sponsor was selling them for $65...I beleive it was genuinesubaruparts or something of the sorts.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

This thread really belongs in the interior forum..but here goes.

It has the ring just like the stock wrx knob..

Heres the pic..

I love it..Ive had three different shift knobs...and this is the best so far.
Should have came on the car.
60-65 bux is the usual price, but you might can get a used one cheaper.
Acho 10-12-2005 09:23 PM

Seems a bit high...is it much higher than the stock knob?
enewtabie 10-12-2005 09:25 PM

no ..its the same..probably the angle.

I can attest as well, firsthand, that the 05 Legacy GT knob fits the WRX (04 in my case) and has the ring for the shift boot. Although, for my WRX and Legacy GT, we actually switched TO the MOMO on both cars. Everyone's got different tastes though. I'd definitely try to find one used. I think i sold mine for like 25 or 30 bucks. Good Luck, but no fears about it not fitting. Definitely much nicer than the wrx's stock knob.
NutBucket 10-12-2005 11:24 PM

The knob sure SEEMS taller than the one in gf's '05 WRX. I know personally I'd like a shorter one and that's with the Kartboy SS.
Hank3 10-12-2005 11:37 PM

One of the best knobs I've tried also. It's heavier than the stock WRX knob so shifts are not as notchy (i.e. smoother shifts) and it's really not that tall. Mine's at a perfect height with it being on Kartboy's Short Shifter. Mine's pictured here also w/momo's leather shift boot:

chris-man 10-13-2005 12:11 AM

the legacy shift knob looks kind of like a bmw knob...just the shift patter is different.
hlanderr 10-13-2005 02:39 AM

I think it looks outstanding.
I got a MOMO shift knob, the aluminum/airleather sphere.

At first I liked it A LOT, as it matches the steering wheel of my 2005 WRX so well. But it doesn't feel as good as the stock WRX shift knob....

This shift knob looks pretty high-class and looks very confortable too.
I normally shift with a verticle hand so my sphere knob is getting kind of awkward....

Anybody wanna trade if you got the Legacy one!!?! ehh!?! hahha
Or you can have my MOMO knob for 40 shipped (About 2 months usage, no marks at all, leather intact completely)

The only thing I don't really like about the Legacy shift knob is that it just doesn't seem to fit so well in the looks department inside a WRX...

I think I have to disagree. I think the looks fit very nicely. The pattern on the knob match that of the steering wheel. Although, I do think it does look out of place if you don't get the STI shifter trim. The little silver ring on the top of the knob looks out of place without the trim to accompany it.

This shift knob was my first addition to my FXT. I love it. It absolutly perfect.

Yup, I have a Leg GT shift knob as well. Fits perfectly. It's an excellent addition to the car, both in driving feel, and in interior bling. If you want to get one in a hurry, go to the legacygt.com board and hit the want to buy forum.

its too tall. you have to pistol grip it. thats not the correct driving position. My Father has it on his Outback XT. Way too tall.
its too tall. you have to pistol grip it. thats not the correct driving position. My Father has it on his Outback XT. Way too tall.
Depends mostly on the shifter. The Leg GT knob is a good height with my factory short shifter.

It also depends on how long your arms are, and whether you have the armrest extension installed (I do).
Snow Drift 10-13-2005 11:04 AM

if u put your palm ontop of the shifter, like you are supposed to...

the top is too small to get a good grip on, and the length from the top where your hand is to the base is very long and makes for sloppy shifts.
Xymox 10-13-2005 01:24 PM
its too tall. you have to pistol grip it. thats not the correct driving position.
Yeah right. And I guess all BMWs and Porsche's shift knobs (LGT knob modeled after the 3-series shape) are also incorrect for driving position. What in tarnation are you talking about?
Snow Drift 10-13-2005 01:43 PM

You're not supposed to grip a shiftknob from the side. You are supposed to rest your palm on the top of it and push it forward w/ your wrist for 1st/3rd/5th, or pull it down to 2nd/4th/6th.

The LGT knob is too tall. You are raising its center of gravity. a knob that is closer to the base of the shaft is better than a tall one.
Hank3 10-13-2005 02:21 PM

It's just a shift knob. I doubt the fine-tuned ergonomics are going to truly matter for the average driver on here who has the Legacy knob. Most of us use our rides as daily drivers with the occasional spirited drive or auto-x, some auto-x regularly, and then there are the small percentage on here who are amateur racers or do it professionally. For us common folks, I think the look and feel of the Legacy knob is plenty fine for us. We're not going to be exemplifying race-type shifts during our normal commuting nor do we need to place our hands a certain way on the knob to shift better or more correctly. Everyone has a certain driving style and the knob is more of a nicety item for us.

Just my $.02...

:)
Xymox 10-13-2005 02:42 PM

IF ANYTHING the notchy gearbox and lack-luster tranny is going to be the real issue in degrading your performance, not the type of freakin' shift knob you're using.

o2sys 10-13-2005 03:08 PM

Here is mine got it for $20 from the dealer....and yea the bottom of the knob is exacly the same as the stock knob but i cut mine off anyways...here is a pic of mine with AVO short shifter and stock boot:

and as for a feel, it feels and looks very nice, very good quality, it adds a very nice european style look to the interior esp for the 05+ interiors....is heavier too compared to the stock knob.

Razo Drift Spec RA117 480grams (2lbs). Center weighted, and designed for crisper shifts.

Man that thing is MASSIVE!

you could kill a man with that thing!
as if you were to take it off to beat him with it instead of leaving it on and driving over him..... beating him with it is the man's way!
hlanderr 10-14-2005 01:56 AM

Nice try in putting the teddy bear next to it to try to make the killer shift knob look innocent and law-abiding...... you deceptive driver you! hahaha nice ride

A shifter is best when it's as close to the steering wheel without being in the way. In a street car, you don't want it blocking any HVAC or stereo controls. A shifter that you have to extend your shoulder forward and down to reach is as helpful to proper driving as reclining your seat for that 'lay back' look.

There is a lot more to shift knob design than "it doesnt get in the way." Ive never seen a shift knob that got in the way of anything. Who said anything about extending my shoulder? The knob is right there w/in easy reach just like the stock one.

However, the stock knob, just like the LGT's is very tall. This makes the length, time, and effort to shift greater. They are also very light. A weighted (counter or center-weighted) knob will allow for better shifts.

Why do you think the S2000 and Miata guys use those Voodoo knobs that are counter wighted and basically a big marble. its low to the base of the shifter, weighted, shaped to allow your palm the maximum surface area, etc.

LGT doesnt have any of that.

CHEATER you cut yours!

I'll still measure mine when i get a chance.
o2sys 10-14-2005 11:26 AM

hahaha but i do admit i tried the LGT know with the stock lever and yea it was garbage, it was too tall and made it feel wably...but with a single shaft desgin short shifter (unlike kartboy thats double shaft design) u can really screw down the knob to the max and looks a whole lot better and feels great.....is one of things u gotta touch it to believe

Moooooooooooohahaahaha!
Hagwag02 01-19-2006 09:29 PM

I wasn't aware there is a proper way to grasp the shifter. I always found that the design of the knob is different depending on the application or preference which may require either a palm or a side grasp (maybe even with the thumb on top with the palm/fingers wrapped around the shank).

While I like the sphere I now have, the leather WRX or these LGT knobs feel good and lend themselves to a wide variety of shifting styles.

wow this thread has suddenly become very, very homo-erotic.

  In retrospect, perhaps I was ill-advised in my choice of imagery...

Suffice to say that the selection of shifter accessories can be a very intimate experience. ;)
