Sidemarker installed by anyone? part 1

IronChef 09-02-2001 01:15 AM

Sidemarker installed by anyone?

Anyone had the guts to install the sidemarker (repeaters) on the fenders of their wrx? Love the looks of them but I'm a little scared drilling into the fenders. Is there a wiring harness available to light them up? What about a template for drilling the holes?
Subies 09-02-2001 01:38 AM

Does anyone know how much does dealer charge you to install side markers?

I would say it takes determination more than guts to actually cut into the fenderwell of a car less than 1 month old... sorry to say, but my template was destroyed in the process -- it basically consisted of an index card trimmed to fit snug with the sidemarker.

There is no harness available, but since you're probably replacing the front reflectors with clears (which have no holes to fit bulbs), all you'd have to do is extend the existing wire/harness to fit the sidemarkers. If you're going to dremel an opening in the front reflectors to fit bulbs and keep the sidemarkers functional, you'll have to do some splicing... more on that later.

BTW, seeing as how there's a demand for templates and such, I'll be selling templates on e-bay for $100 (one side), $150 (both sides). Index cards will be available for $50 per 100-pack ;)

IronChef: Better yet... I live ~10 minutes away from you... do you have a digital camera?
IronChef 09-04-2001 01:54 PM

Yes I can borrow a digital camera. When can you meet?

Sidemarkers

Iron,

Both wrxnate and I have the sidemarkers - we drilled into the cars with little problems and got them hooked up as turn signals only. Mine do not activate with the city lights. I really like both mine and his - I have the clear lights with the yellow bulbs and he has amber lights with yellow bulbs. If you buy them from a reputable aftermarket company they will also come with drilling templates. Both of ours did. They also come with all of the wiring and connection hardware you need to install them.

It is a little bit of a challenge to find the 15/16 inch metal bit you need to do this, but otherwise it is a mindless install.

I will happily get some pics for you if you care to see them.

JaMa: which sidemarkers do you have? FHI or an aftermarket company? The reason I ask is because I can't see a 15/16" hole being right for the FHI units...

IronChef: can you make it to the meet on the 15th?

yea.... i REALLY want these too! i am having the same reservations about drilling into the fenders  if i did i guess i would just slap a gob of vasaline inthere so they wouldnt get rusty. the euro models with them have little recesses, right?!

I installed my JDM sidemarkers but need the wiring to make them blink with the reflectors. Has anyone done this? Winslow
Accurit Performance 02-04-2002 09:51 AM

my opinion....

i think its best not to cut a hoel for the side markers.....sicne u have to cut a very good hole for the oem markers.....unless u get a universal type that only requires one hole about an inch and two small holes for the screws....jus m akde sure u put some protective coat on it so u don t get no rust....

or

jus get the JDM Side mirror LED turn signals.....shoudl be alot easier to install and no holes to drill...

JDM Side mirror LED turn signals

JDM Side mirror LED turn signals: Tell me more!

Are these similar to the MBZ C-class ? What about heated option ? Hook us up!

Yes, the LED mirrors are similar to the Mercedes versions. They do require drilling a hole for wiring. They are just covers that are applied to your factory mirrors. No heater option. Winslow

How did you wire them? Winslow
STEVESblueWRX 02-05-2002 02:30 PM

i agree with accruit

The universal ones are very easy to install, I started with a small piolt hole and filed it bigger as needed. It worked great!!! The hardest part is drilling into a car 3 days old. But I had just finished drilling into my trunk for an aftermarket spoiler so it was not as painful. Just be careful!!!
ashtaron14 02-05-2002 11:20 PM

Just wired them into the stock front ones, so they work the same as the ones in the orange condom... Cause it doesn't drag too much voltage, you don't need a new fuse...
Sokudo 06-08-2002 12:36 AM

does anybody have the template? i just ordered a pair of jdm sidemarkers and i want to know how u guys wired it....
Diversion 06-08-2002 01:23 AM

I'd also be interested in a pair of JDM Sidemarkers for my WRX but in aftermarket form (clear lenses)..

I'm sure Japan has aftermarket clear lense replacements for WRX orange colored sidemarkers.

Robert, I'm starting to wonder if you don't like me. I have the template and you know I have these installed on my car. What's up?

Winslow
Sokudo 06-08-2002 10:32 AM

Hi Winslow! I really wanted to ask you but i know you're busy and moving out of state so did not want to bother u about little things but if ur able to,tell me which is the best time for u to hook up! thanks!
subaruracerx 06-08-2002 11:34 AM

I installed them on my car. I just wired them up to the turn signals with blue 3M connectors. Drilled in the side of the fender with a dremmel tool. I would recommend putting masking tape around the fender so that you do not scratch it. Make a template out of card board. Good way to practice before you drill. If you live in So Cal I can show you mine.

I have both clear front parking and clear side markers. The came out sweet. Motor Sports Dynamics did them for me. The only draw back was they broke my Fender Splash guards lining. I got that fixed under warranty. I also just installed the Fuba Antenna on my WRX Wagon. That thing is so Sweet. Better sound and reception. I need to body work to fill in the old Antenna hole. You should all these looks am getting from the VW People :monkey: I will try to post pics, I need a digital Camera.

they sure are!
Diversion 06-16-2002 02:32 AM

Cool, where'd you get them? How much? And how did you know where the exact spot to install them was? And also, are they wired up as a turn signal, or running lights? So many questions!

Jay
Sokudo 06-16-2002 02:40 AM

i got these from suby dude,he sells stuff on ebay and he's here on board too! i have not wired it yet, doing it tomorrow and just going to tap it from the front signal light as for the position,i looked at a lot of jdm pics and just eyeballed it there.i also made the template!
KenG 06-16-2002 03:18 AM

Oh wow, I had no idea OEM Subaru had smoked fenderlenses AND sidemarkers... I have the clear ones that I tinted dark with paint.. But i'd rather have some OEM ones! How much did those set you back? And do you know if Stephen (TaiChi) is still selling them?

Edit: Post a pic of your smoked lenses!!!
