I just installed mine too....
First I took the boot off the console.
Then I Centered the trim and marked the spots where the holes are and then just dremeled a little notch in each of the spots until the trim snapped in...i shaved a little in certain areas to make the trim sit about flush.
Finally once i got the trim to snap in tightly i put the boot back on and held in place while i used my dremel to drill thru the top of the trim and down thru the boot and plastic. Had to enlarge some spots on the boot but 4 out of the 6 or so bolts held really tight. The trim doesnt move at all and sits nicely.

Mine is actually made by another forum member (Orson). He had a thread about it awhile ago. It cost me a buck!

You can simply pull it up and out. It's easier when you stick your fingers where the gaps are between the console pieces...:)

here is how I attatched the shift boot... did a little custom work. Cut off the plastic ring, shortened the boot, then attatched it with the bolts holding the trim down... looks really good!

I wouldn't try and install the trim without removing the console piece... that seems like it would be impossible... simply pull up on the section around the ebrake handle and cup holder. then pull up on the shifter section, be sure to remove the shift knob too... thats all there is too it!

this is the replica sti trim where it requires modifications right? the authentic one is a bolt on?
| sirbryanclark | 06-12-2004 11:01 PM |
No, mine is the real STi trim... they both require modification... the replica is just not good quality (I got one first but sent it back cause it sucked)

Hey, i just noticed something.. all you guys with 03's- The shift boot has stitching coming from all 4 corners toward s the center. Looks, nice and even, looks wisely designed. on My 04', the stitching only goes from the bottom 2 corners to the center. It looks odd, and not as good as those 03's. This irritates me! I guess only I would notice stupid stuff like this. Is the 03' leather, or the imitation stuff? Maybe I could swap for that part, if it wasn't foolishly expensive. Are there any genuine leather alternatives?

hmm, i just noticed that my 04 is like yours, i always just assumed it had stitching in all 4 corners but i suppose i was wrong lol

The 02-03' boots were the same and is the same material...wanna-be leather
I'm currently using a momo leather boot. It cost $50 from subydude.com
I do have my 02' boot sitting around somewhere I think. Don't know what a fair price is though...

I bought the replica STi trim off eBay and didn't like the finish. My wife even said it didn't look right in the car. So... took it off this weekend and painted it glossy black. I left the bolts chrome though. I think it looks much better since now it matches my Momo knob.

I used Plasti-Kote gloss black enamel that I had sitting around the house and applied several thin coats. As always with spray paint, the key is to apply thin coats so you won't get runs in the paint. All I did for prep was wipe down the piece with some paint thinner to remove any oils or other surface contaminents. Rubbing alcohol would work just as well. I did not sand the piece.
