Rally Australia - talk about it here! part 1

MulletSlayer 10-31-2002 10:40 AM

Rally Australia

I don't see a thread so I guess I will start one. Stage 1 is done and Solberg is in the lead by .3 seconds over Marcus.
Subie Gal 10-31-2002 11:13 AM

quote from my WRC email list:
Technical: Subaru is reporting encouraging progress with the Impreza WRC2002's high-speed stability, after changes to its differential settings and tweaks to the suspension. That aside, the cars will run in a specification largely unchanged from that used in New Zealand.

Sporting: Subaru has entered two Impreza WRC2002s for this event, to be driven by four-times world champion Tommi Mäkinen and young Norwegian Petter Solberg.

Petter Solberg said: "I didn't have the most straightforward test for here - we did have a few problems with the gearbox and the propshaft - but it's better that they happened during testing and not the rally. This morning at shakedown, the car felt very strong and we've found a few things since New Zealand that will help. It's hard to say whether we can really fight with the Peugeots here but I'm hoping that we'll certainly be closer."

Tommi Mäkinen said: "This is a rally that I usually look forward to and I've done well here in the past, so I feel very relaxed. The car's very comfortable to drive now - I've got more confidence with it than I had earlier in the season."
should be a good one!!
*fingers crossed*

go Subaru!!!!

After SS5 it's Gronholm, Burns. Haven't I seen this before??
pio!pio! 11-01-2002 12:53 AM

GROSS Michael Park bit THROUGH his tongue when Markko landed a jump hard. yuck
MulletSlayer 11-01-2002 08:32 AM

Petter is back in second. Hopefully he can hang on or maybe Marcus can have a hydrualic problem again.

GO PETTER!
Petter Solberg said: "We're obviously trying hard and it was frustrating when we got the tyre choice wrong because I had no feeling at all for two stages. But we're in a good position now and we have to keep this pace to make sure Grönholm can't relax."
gooo Petter :D

Burns out

Burns is out.. and so is Possum Bourne. But at least Cody Crocker is 2nd in Group N.. :)
jonny_boy 11-01-2002 12:35 PM

It would be nice to see Petter finish out this one without car problems. He's had a frustrating year.
pio!pio! 11-01-2002 02:35 PM

Hopefully Gronholm will have some sort of a mechanical failure and Petter can take P1

Sainz seems very very close though. Although it seems to me that Sainz always has some kind of trouble usually
Jewbaru 11-01-2002 03:29 PM

Maybe Petter will catch him on his own. :D

Make up 29s on Marcus? Petter better pick up the pace then :)
Adrian128 11-02-2002 12:36 AM

Tommi and Petter just finished 1st and 2nd on SS14. Petter is now only 28 secs behind Gronholm. :) Go Subaru.. :)
WRSport 11-02-2002 12:38 AM

I wish Nikki was with speed coverage everyweekend!
Kilika2k 11-02-2002 06:19 AM

This is kinda unsportsmanship like but damnit, something please go wrong with Gronholms car! You got your championship already now give Petter his first win!!!! (Although Petter would like to deserve the win, but **** happens)

I heard Gronholm might let up a bit to make sure he finishes, hopefully it will backfire at him by throwing him off the pace
KilrWagn 11-02-2002 06:26 AM

I know I am not the only one who is horribly sick of Peugots winning all the damn time. :monkey: If Subaru can finally give Petter a car that wont fail on him he can take it easy. I'll also second the motion for a mechanical failure on Grinholms car.

GO SUBARU !!! GO PETTER !!!:D :D :D
Superveget 11-02-2002 11:36 AM

It seems that Subaru is totally overmatched by Peugeout. They not only have a better car. They have a buch of good drivers. Richard retired with a clutch problems, and the Pugs still have a chance for a 1-2 finish. The WRC comission should go back to the times when u could only nominate two drivers to get manufacturers points, and driver points for whoever competes. Right now if Citroen gets 25 drivers they could have a good chance for the championship. Something needs to be done to at least to make the manufacturer championship more competitive.
Kilika2k 11-02-2002 08:01 PM

Yeah, but only the top 6 can get points, which are usually half filled with Peugeots anyways. But yeah, its still the top 2 drivers from each manufacturer to earn manufacturer points, but for the driver's champion, anybody can earn points no matter how many drivers they got. But all I gotta say is that Peugeot has too much money. Subaru is barely having enough to supply 2 cars and sometimes we run a third car but its very rare. With that in mind, its difficult to develop young drivers as they have no car to drive! But somehow I beginning to feel the Subarus are becoming quite competitive now, look how many times we were so close to winning but to end it with an engine failure! I think next year we could be contenders again, as long as nothing happens with the new car.
Rattler 11-02-2002 10:15 PM

At least they don't have to deal with "team orders" BS!

I watched the replay tonight of Day 1. Man, that Mitsu must have smacked that tree pretty good to put the motor out in the road.

Go Petter!!! I just checked Leg 3 and he was knocked to 3rd by Harri in the Pug! Its still early though. Its only Stage 22!! Carlos rolled but is still in.
ChrisW 11-02-2002 11:39 PM

I was just listening to Nicky Grists explaination of why the Pugs are so good. They have the only 5 speed gear box because they are running something in the range of 580 foot pounds of torque!

That is within 100 foot pounds of my friends dodge ram 2500 pickup with the cummings desiel engine option!
dwx 11-02-2002 11:59 PM

Bah it's gonna be a 1-2 Peugeot finish AGAIN. That'll make like 5 rallies in a row where they max out manufacturer points. Hopefully Petter and Tommi will hold down 3-4.

Wow, what a nice clean Peugeot/Subaru/Ford 1-2-3 finish. Too bad its the wrong order

Kilika2k 11-03-2002 05:39 AM

Freak! Tommi was excluded! Well, it seems they weighed his car different times, and the last one was under the 1230kg minimum at 1222kg. That truely sucks. SWRT protested somewhat but it seems they have accepted the penalty which means Tommi doesn't get any points. There were variations on how much his car weighed through the different weighings. Car weighed as much as 1272 kg but some how lost 50 kgs! Something is very wrong here.
Subie Gal 11-03-2002 10:36 AM
Petter Solberg said: "I'm reasonably happy with third because I knew last night that the gap to Harri was going to be very hard to defend on today's stages. It's like I've said all along on this rally - once we get into fifth- and sixth-gear stuff, I haven't been able to stay with the Peugeots. Today's stages were very high-speed in places and Harri just had too much for me. But it's good again to be the best non-Peugeot and I
think we have been closer to them here."
cheating????
Subaru World Rally Team Principal David Lapworth said: "The judgement has come as a big disappointment to Tommi and the team. However, in the interests of the sport, we have decided to accept the judgement and will not appeal the Stewards' decision."
makes ya wonder doesnt it???
it's not entirely unheard of... u know someone out there is 'bending the rules' now and again... :(

sucks for Tommi tho....

Patrick L 11-03-2002 12:44 PM

That is BS, Tommi should be able to keep his 4th place.
Quote from Rally-live.com
Subaru have appealed the verdict, stating that the car was weighed minus the spare wheel and tyre which together weigh anywhere between twelve and fifteen kilograms. More news on this situation as it comes to hand.
Thug 11-03-2002 04:30 PM

Ugh!
Why cant SWRT get their act together? They finally get both cars to stay together for a whole race and now they cant keep Tommi's damn car over weight. Not good for a guy that's trying to find some motivation.
mordy_2v 11-03-2002 04:39 PM

I mean, it is tommi, how much stuff did he break off the car before they weighed it?

Petter put in an impressive drive. His first win can't be far off.

I took these pics on SS19:

Edit: Kinda reminds me of Rim of the World where somebody who lost their exhaust on a stage (one of the Primitve guys, maybe?) was putting out an APB on it and hoping someone would find and return it.

Or: Car too slow? Hit this button and drop 10 kilos (your choice of front or rear buttons so you can tailor the handling on the fly).
grumbly 11-04-2002 12:37 PM

Conversions :

40 kilos = 88 lbs.
50 kilos = 110 lbs

I have to say its kinda hard to "misplace" 80 lbs from a car that is already on a strict diet. It doesn't seem to point to SWRT cheating but it does point to something very strange going on.

On a side note did anyone else catch Nicky's comment about SWRT and Prodrive loosing a lot of engineers this year? Any one know what that's all about?
grumbly 11-04-2002 03:38 PM

From SWRT.com:
"As far as the exclusion is concerned, the judgement came as a big disappointment to Tommi and the team. Scrutineers weighed each car several times today and there seems to be a big variation between the figures they recorded for Tommi's car."

"After SS22 the car was weighed by scrutineers at 1260kgs (versus a minimum weight of 1230kgs) and after SS24 1271kgs. After SS23 the car was weighed at 1222kgs, and the only change was the removal of the spare wheel - an item that weighs less than 20kgs."

"The rules in this area are very clear, and we know that the cars are likely to be weighed at the end of every stage, so we clearly believed that the car was at its correct weight throughout the event. We will be making our own investigation into this situation."

"However, in the interests of the sport, we have decided to accept the judgement and will not appeal the Stewards' decision."
It seems strange that they would just willingly give up a 4th place finish if they knew they did noting wrong. Im probably reading too much into the tea leaves but walking away from a 4th place finish just doesn't seem right.
Coati 11-04-2002 05:41 PM

Maybe one of their newbie replacement engineers forgot to put some heavy part back in when they were working on it in service?:alien:
j y 11-04-2002 06:02 PM

Does the Impreza WRC car have any intercooler sprayers or fluids that get used up during the course of a rally?

-Jeff
skope 11-04-2002 06:22 PM

50kg is a huge amount of weight to just lose. This whole thing is strange. I think they forgot to put something back in the car at service. But was there a service between then?
johnfelstead 11-04-2002 07:17 PM

not sure we will ever discover what really happened. 50Kg is like losing the wheels/tyres and spare, in the scale of how well setup these cars are its a lot. Dont forget these cars are setup to weigh the minimum even when they have lost their bumpers (it happens a lot) and its out of fluids such as IC spray/ WI water and fuel.

If it was a few Kg then it could have been a cockup in setup, 50Kg is very strange. I wonder if they are balasting the chasis and that was removed for a service item swap and not put back? I cant see any other sensible explanation at the moment.
MulletSlayer 11-05-2002 08:29 AM

They are saying on rally-live.com that Subaru were only 8 kg short of the minimum weight. At the last weight in the Tommi's Impreza weighted 1222kg
and the miniumum weight is 1230kg.
Bugsie1 11-05-2002 03:45 PM

I just got back from Australia, I'll see if I can put together a thread with some of my pics. I got to see some really cool behind the scenes stuff - Rally HQ and all the Technology (thx to Scoobynet's Simon) and the TV production facilities (thx to Jo from Chrysalis) Also went to the end of Rally party with everyone (McRae was a notable absentee!)

I just found out about Tommi being excluded (that sucks!)

- Richard.
AndyRoo 11-05-2002 08:00 PM

What the hell is a Kg?!?!?!?

just kiddin, 1230 kgs is like 2700 lbs right?

I dont think it was cheating, you cant expect to move up 3 positions on 2 Pugs and another Subaru being driven hard just by taking out a few kilos, or even 50. If it was cheating, it was a pretty weak effort. I mean seriously, the scooby engineers could be a little more creative then that if they want to cheat to win.

"Hey, what if we took 8 kilograms off Tommi's car? That just might do it."

John's explanations seems the most likely. They could have took off some ballast to service something then forgot to put it back on. Pretty dumb, although, it still doesnt explain why it was fluctuating during the rally.
chri3 11-06-2002 12:16 AM

I know when i usta go offroading in my old truck i would pick up a lot of weight in mud. Maybe they lost a lot of dirt? did the car have the same amount of fuel each time? This really sux, and im sure they'll get to the bottom of it.
