Ireland gears up for 2007 inclusion
By Nancy Knapp Schilke - Motorsport.com
Rally Ireland has been gearing up to host a World Rally Championship event in 2007, the organizers have taken the necessary steps including a meeting in December, 2005 with the Federation International de l'Automobile's (FIA) Safety Delegate.
Today, the Subaru World Rally Team gave their approval by entering Chris Atkinson in this year's Irish rally (March 10-12). The two-day event was expanded from their first event in 2005, this year the event will be 268 km and the stages will be only on asphalt.
"Gaining more experience on asphalt is one of Chris's development objectives this year. The challenging stages in Ireland will be great practice for him," said David Lapworth, SWRT performance director. "He needs all the asphalt experience he can get but, in particular, coming from sunny Australia, he hasn't had many chances to drive in the wet - that shouldn't be a problem in Ireland!"
Atkinson placed fifth in the WRC season opener in Monte Carlo in a Subaru Impreza WRC 05 for the SWRT team. Rally Ireland will be a good test for the Australian driver as he gains experience on tarmac surfaces. One of three drivers for Subaru in WRC competition, the 26-year-old will pilot a Group N Subaru with co-driver Glenn Macneall for the special Irish event.
"It's unfamiliar territory for me, but from what I've heard it's going to be a lot of fun," commented Atkinson on his new adventure. "I've never even been to Ireland before, let alone competed there, but I know it's a country where rallying is very popular and the local competition is bound to be pretty fierce. But it's great to have the opportunity to get more asphalt kilometres under my belt so I'm really looking forward to it."
Rally Ireland will run under the WRC required standards as the rally will undergo scrutineering for consideration on the 2007 calendar. Charles Reynolds was nominated in January, 2006, as the FIA Sporting Advisor who will oversee this year's competition.
"It's a great boost to have Chris compete in our rally this year, he is one of the sports up and coming drivers and provides a great challenge for the Irish drivers," said Rally Ireland event secretary, Claire Walsh.

that is awesome news!

I'd hit it!
But I can't see the FIA adding a 17th event to the already crowded calendar.
That means they'd have to drop one of the current events, and I sure hope it isn't New Zealand :(

Boo-yah! Cheap overnight flights from Chicago in the off-season on AerLingus for the win! I've got to break out my Ordinance map and see where this thing runs.
Rallye-info.com's been talking about his for a few weeks now; double plus for being a tarmac event.
As for schedule crowding, there's no reason to have rallies in Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus. Make it Cyprus and force the Turks and Greeks to come together. :)

Flights from Boston for this year, round trip, for under $400. And Feb-Mar-Apr are usually the dry months. :)
That's not bad at all considering it was about $900 to fly round trip from Boston to Helsinki 2 year ago. I would consider it, just like I would have this year, if there were more involved works teams. This year with just 2 teams... not exciting.

Actually, I started jonesing for a trip to Ireland after reading this. It'd be a lot cheaper now than if it becomes an official WRC event. Round trip flights from Chicago to Dublin are around $440 for the weekend.

It's actually more exciting this year, with all the privateer teams.
Did you watch Monte Carlo?

Not exciting to me that is. Besides, I don't have speed (and they're not carrying it) & I don't feel like DL copyrighted video. Personal reasons at best.

I would most definitely NOT hit it!!!!
People are so rabid about rally in Ireland, every person in the whole country would be there and it would be hugely crowded. Severe traffic jams on an insufficient road network would ensue. You would not see anything but the car parked in front of you, while your stuck on some B-road traffic jam 20 miles away from the action.
Go to any national rally in Ireland instead, you will see more WRC cars than in the WRC, more action (the crews there are absolutely nuts and there is 30 second intervals = lots of passing!), and you can be apart of the spectator rally where everyone drives like they are a rally driver to get to the stages
<---- been to 4 rallies in Ireland

I could be wrong but as I remember the 2004 Mexico rally was a real car breaking event. I didn't watch the 2005 yet. Or maybe they had problems at the water crossings?

OK, so this one this year is going to be a few days before St Patricks Day... would you guess, if you had to, that next years, if they were added to WRC, would be around the same time? :leprechaun:
Because I would stay that extra week... just to party. And drink, and drink some more. Or should I say, not stop drinking from the beginning of the rally... until I got on the plane coming home....

I wouldn't say so - given the fact that the whole country is on the beer for the day (hence the national holiday part), I'd say it's a pretty big deal.
Just don't ask for corned beef and cabbage - the locals will laugh at you.

Cool - that must be where you got your driving skills from!
I'll be heading to this event in 2007 anyway (that is assuming it makes wrc level)
Anyone on nasioc own a helicopter by any chance - seemingly it's the greatest way to watch a wrc event - i just can't find anyone to borrow one off!

I flew from Chicago to Dublin back in November for ~$200. AA has some killer deals in the winter time to fill their planes to Dublin.
Anyone know where in Ireland this rally takes place?
My guess is they'd drop Cyprus. Cyprus is less about competition and more about attrition. I doubt they'd add another round without dropping another.

I thought you were going to convert me and make me dress all foo foo like....
I can't imagine what Ireland would be like if the WRC came there. It would be total gridlock, how are they planning to handle that? The country has a terrible and dangerous road network - great fun (yet very scary) for driving twisty roads, but terrible for getting anywhere. I love Ireland, but it has to be the scariest place I have ever driven

This year the rally is the second weeked in March, the 10th-12th. I didn't check AA, but AerLingus is about $165 each way from Chicago if you plan it right. United and Lufthansa is a bit less but with stopovers in London or Frankfurt, and not enough less to make up for a direct flight.
Ireland isn't as scary as some parts of Chicago I've driven through. Encountering a semi on one of those little roads at night is interesting, though. I can see congestion being a big problem. Thier rail network is ancient and there's too much reliance on busses.
