Does Sabestian Loeb have to be the road sweeper again? Is this how it goes, because he's championship leader?

Second on the road... hmmm hopefully Petter won't have any rocks reconfigure his cooling system again....
Also, can we please see Marcus' car crap out... I think he is just about ready to lose it on Peugeot.
Go the Subaru!

Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Petter, but am I the only one that thinks that Marcus would have stood a decent chance at the championship this year if Peugeot had just left well enough alone with the 206?
After watching that Privateer 206 "keep up" fairly well at the last race, I'm not convinced that Peugeot NEEDED the new car...

I think that the switch from the 206 to the 307 was more of a company descision than a racing one. Although there are some distinct advantages to rallying the 307 over the 206.
See here (link)
It is still quite early in the development of the 307, compared with the Xsara and the WRX, so I think we will see it become more competitive as the year rolls along.
Even with the old car I think Marcus would still be having trouble beating the young guys (Seb, Petter, and Markko)

Citreon is going to the C4 next year, that car is based on a the same platform as the 307 so maybe they will suck next year.

What I'm saying is that I'm thinking that stupid reliability issues are preventing Marcus from making a fight of it.
Not domination, to be sure. I'm not looking for domination. Ideally I'd like a close fight between the Impreza and the 206 up to the last race, whereupon Petter beats Marcus in the final stage...
Its harder to get excited about a fight with the Xsara, since Loeb is just so prickley and "French". I'm constantly rooting for him to blow up...

Petter Solberg
"It's been a difficult day let me tell you. I tried to do my best but the water splash thing wasn't good and we lost a lot of time there. Since then we've kept trying to make up time, keeping changing little things, but it seems like nothing is making too much difference and it's quite frustrating - that's not really our style. The conditions were very unusual today, and we've struggled to get the tyre choices and the cuts just right but hopefully, looking at the forecast, tomorrow will be a different story."

Petter 3rd place,Hirvonen 6th. Not bad. At least they got points for themselves and the team.
| WRCar | 06-27-2004 03:27 PM |
I think Petter drove quite well to finish 3rd. He didn't really have a shot at the front runners due to his modified hood scoop (Take that STi). He did manage to set the most (6) fastest stage times, which is good for Subaru.
| stiski | 06-27-2004 04:27 PM |
Anyone read why they decided to take away Loeb's ten second jump start penalty???
| WRCar | 06-27-2004 06:15 PM |
Stiski:
After looking at the video of Loeb's start you can see that he doesn't jump the start, but as soon as the lights went out the car jumped and then stalled. I think the officials thought he jumped the start, but then reviewed the tape of it.
To me it was quite clear that he did not jump the start. I wonder what was going on though... cause he stalled the Citroen a couple times IIRC.

| Dr. WOT | 06-28-2004 08:44 AM |
Me too, I couldn't help but laugh when Marcus made that jesture. But I felt bad about it until Nicky Grist commented that it was hilarous. Still feel bad for Timo, that had to hurt. It might have cost the the race too.
It's a shame that Perelli got caught out by the conditions because Subaru could have used a good result here. Still 3rd is good and Miko had a good run. I am starting to wonder is picking him was a good idea for a 2 car effort. Weren't they running 3 cars while Petter was learning the ropes? I'm all for nurturing young talent, but you still need to be able to challenge for wins.

I was bummed that Petter didn't really catch fire again until Day 3! It was a decent result, but if he'd been closer, he mighta snatched 2nd from Marcus.
Kinda funny- Nicky bragging about the Pirelli XR's at the beginning- only to have them be a big part of the problem.
Sometimes I really wish SWRT were on Micheins... :(
As far as Miko... well, I still think they shoulda hired Colin back! Sure he'd crash out plenty, but at least he shakes things up and has some personality!!! (Plenty, actually).
Interesting little interview w/ Nicky there- Colin looked a tad uncomfortable... mebbe he didn't like being quizzed on camera by his old co-driver?

I don't think so. Last year in some of the later, wetter rallies, Solberg had a distinct advantage from the Pirellis. I would go as far as to say they were a large factor in his Driver's Championship.

Most important point I noticed, Robert Ried (Burns' Codriver) came in at the end of the show and said Burns is doing good. He's home from the hospital, although still undergoing treatment. The signs look to be for a good recovery.
Unless Petter becomes a Tarmac Specialist, it looks like Loeb is pretty much set to win the championship.

Seb is in great position, but rally racing is unpredictable and a DNF lurks around each bend. The championship will go down to the wire.
| DrBiggly | 06-28-2004 04:32 PM |
I didn't watch the rally until sometime late last night. Crazy to see Petter take the dive in the splash; I don't often see the ROOF SCOOP take in water like that.
Then after the stage with the metal piece incident, Marcus' words keep sticking in my head: "...right into the ass of Timo."
I can only laugh now because it wasn't too serious; just a bruise so they were saying. Still, for something to puncture the bottom of the seat like that is quite bizarre.

I just keep thinking, if only there had been one more stage. Just another 5 or 10k, it could have been so different.
Loeb returns on three wheels because of brake problems. Marcus has a gearbox failure AND a tire fragment.
Just a few more kilometers and Petter could have taken the whole thing! What impresses me more than Loeb's coolness or his speed, cause the man is ice cold and lightning fast, but he has some of the best luck I have ever seen.
