Real Deal Roof Scoop

I've been thinking I want a little more ventilation in my cabin. I was thinking about an aftermarket moonroof, but I don't think it's worth damaging the structural integrity of the car... a lot of thinking put me in the mindset that I want to get a real functional roof scoop/vent setup going. I think it would be quieter than having windows down, better if it's raining (duh) etc... What does everyone think, though?
Is it extremely noisy?
Will it kill my car?
How hard is it to do, if I have a body shop make the cut?
Good prices? Color matching to MBP?
Anything you can tell me, opinions, etc. will help me make my decision. Thanks all!

I have been wanting to put a roof scoop on for a while now, and I too would like to hear what people say...

I saw these scoops / vents in a previous search, and they look relatively inexpensive... and clearly what I'm looking for. I wish I knew "how much for the hole?" (If I had a nickel for every time I asked that question.. I mean, umm.. err..)

My roof scoop experience

I installed the Primitive scoop, Primitive flap assembly and a fiberglass inner air vent assembly from RHR Performance. I did it all myself, except that the scoop was painted by my body shop at the same time as my rear wing.
I cut the hole with a rented nibbler. Never used a nibbler before, but I had no problem (I am fairly handy, but not mechanically experienced.) The nibbler I rented was able to cut a radiused curve at the four corners of the hole to match the Primitive vent/flap assembly. I mounted the Primitive vent/flap with silicone aquarium sealant. I may drill and bolt it eventually, but for now it seems to be holding well. Because I wanted to retain the headliner, I cut a 1/2" strip of metal off the Primitive flap assembly to give it a lower profile. The RHR grp vent assembly (it has two directional open/closable vents that point at driver and co-driver's head) I attached to the headliner. I had to work out a handle extension to open and close the flap. This slides through a hole I drilled in the grp inner vent assembly.
The Primitive scoop was painted WRB to match by my body shop (while they painted my rear wing.) Attached it with stainless bolts through the roof.
Warning: positioning the whole thing was a little tricky. There is a cross brace in the roof structure that you need to avoid (vent is in front of it, and I had to modify and move forward the map light assembly by the rearview mirror. I did not remove the headliner during the install, but I recommend that you do, as you will be better able to sort out the location.
Results: Looks great inside and out. Ventilation is excellent, especially when driving at moderate speeds when you would otherwise need A/C. Nice directed flow at the head. At 80 mph it is pretty loud, though. Lots of folks ask what the scoop does and I answer "cabin ventilation." Nice to be able to say that it functions rather than just looks.
I say go for it.

Inner vent

BTW, search for a post entitled "anti-glare dash" by Jaxx and there is an interior shot of the WRC car with my inner vent assembly (from RHR Performance). Of course, there it is without headliner.

I just got the Type RA roof vent that is factory from Subaru(thanks DARE :) ) Im going to be popping this bad boy in this week, Ill take some pics during the process and hopefully it goes smoothly...btw, I got the vent from primitave, It's a great vent but I wanted a little more stock looking interior. The STI RA vent comes with the interior plastic trim that covers up everything nicely to make it look factory stock....

uberu,
yes yes yes! definitely take some pix and post to this thread, it would be great. Are you doing the whole process yourself?
for clarity, the vent you got from primitive is the same one that comes from Subaru? and is the STi RA vent the one you got (the one that has some plastic trim)?
did you get a scoop too or just the vent?

The roof vent from primitave is a nice quality vent. The only thing is that it is a little unfinished, it is made for a real rally car and racing, where as the STI RA vent actually comes on the car from subaru so it is a much more finished product.
here is a link of the vent from Primitave: I will be getting my vent back from the painters sometime this week then I will attack this project 1 saturday and take pics. throughout the process as I go along.

apparently, after some more searching, AVSport (Wayne) can get these parts for about $370 (white only). i sent him an email to see if it includes EVERYTHING pictured.

those pictures are really helpful. thanks. i got everything but the plastic clips to hold the inner plastic molding in... can anyone here get those pieces?
| WRX Ver.7 | 05-14-2003 12:03 PM |
There are pics of mine at : http://photos.yahoo.com/synistrwrx under the "Roof Vent & Scoop" folder. It took about 3 hours to complete using a pneumatic die grinder and air files. The Scoop is a Pridrive STi piece and the vent is Primative. The interior piece is costom made.
| NewFor2002 | 05-14-2003 12:12 PM |
Do you have any pics of the interior piece? Can you control the airflow somehow? (Directionally, on/off entirely, etc?)

have you brought it to a dealer and them say anything??
how is the noise at high speed? when its shut
i wonder how much it decreases resale value
how much did you buy that sucker for?

Actually, I drove by the dealership today checking out the STI. Alot of the sales guys were looking at my car and a few actually knew what it was and one also knew it was a Subaru product. Overall, they thought it was cool :)
As far as, noise at high speeds, open, it gets windy...closed, you cannot even tell its there.
As far as, resale value, depends on how you look at it, it looks like the factory installed it, very clean looking and matches the interior, guess some dealerships would look at it like an aftermarket sunroof...so far no leaks and I have had 1 week of straight rain since install except for today.
Also, with all the other stuff I have done to my car, I would prolly have to sell it privately and it would be listed as another mod I guess
I have seen them shipped from $270-320, they are a little hard to get it seems. I was looking for a while before another member was able to steer me in the right direction.

can you guys estimate how much it would cost a body shop to do this? im not good at all with tools, i ALWAYS break something
| U | 05-27-2003 07:19 PM |
Someone suggested to me that you might be able to find a company that installs aftermarket sunroofs...not so much an autobody place. Show them the assembly and see if they would take on the challenge. You will have 2 things in your favor. One is they cut holes in roofs all day long...plus, they prolly don' t need beer for courage :p As for the price, I have no clue, but I just saw on another post that body shops were charging 75-80 bones to cut a small signal hole in the front 1/4, so I guess a big hole on the roof would be at least double that?!?

How windy does it get? You pretty much have me sold on one. Although I am going to have to find a sunroof place to do mine. I know I WOULD screw it up
Whats your opinion with it and driving 20mph, 40mph, 60mph?
Also, does it get windy in the cabin or is it like a normal sunroof?

DoctorNick: With it open, it sucks in wind at around 5-10mph, It works great keeping the cabin cool...as far as, wind noise, I finally was able to really test it on some back roads this past weekend due the the fact we have had almost 3 weeks of straight rain here in the metro D.C. area. Closed, you cannot even really tell it's there...no rattles no real wind noise. To tell you the truth, the metal on the lid is thicker than the sheet metal on the '02 WRX. When its open, and all your windows are closed...OMG, the thing works awesome, very nice breeze. I found it to be as noisy as an open sunroof at about 65-85 mph.
Screaminfast: I just posted in the "Wanted to buy" forum and I got at least 3 peeps telling me they could get it for me. You are correct, it's not Primitave's vent...I also have their vent, It's very nice but seems unfinished, if you still want a stock look, get the factory Subaru one. I believe it comes on the Type RA, in Europe and Japan as these models do not come with airconditioning. I measured the height this sticks up and the height Primative's sticks up, this one seems a little taller, not much tho. I still think you can mount the scoop over it if you want to :)

They only come white...think the only color of the Type RA is white...I just primered over and painted after sanding a bit...
