Rice???

Ok...I'm a little confused with some posts....I hear that some people on this board believe that anything you add to your car for just looks and no performance = Rice. Is this what is trying to be said or am I confused? I say this because many of you probably have the aluminum shifter trim or dead pedal for example....is this rice or is this just improving the looks of the interior?
Please respond.

Rice is subjective. It is in the eye of the beholder. I think the new message icons are "rice".

I would suggest you do what suits your tastes and ignore such opinions. There isn't any kind of logic behind these comments.
The context in which this word is often used is in describing a car trying to pretend it is something it is not. However it is often thrown about to mean just about anything.

do what you want...dont care what people think...there are people out there that if your car isnt stock its rice and then threes the really bad civics that are rice but the dont think so. its all up to what you think is or isnt. personally i think look mods look good if they are done tastfully. anything looks good dont in taste. even like underglow. i think that looks really nice if done right just my $.02

You are confused. Rice is the 15 year car pop culture. Alteza lights, GT spoilers, cut springs, primer colored body parts, windshield washer lights, that stuff. Bling bling is the chrome wheels, hydrolics, spinners, whistle tips, and all that ghetto stuff. While hick is pickup trucks raised 8 feet off the ground with confederate flags in the window and a shotgun rack in the back. Soccer mom is the 40 year old woman who drives a suburban to target to buy lipstick and parks in a compact parking spot.

Yah: hot rods, pro-street, pro-touring, G-machines, and the mexi ride (car truck whatever they are all the same)
Actually when I first started hearing Rice, it just refered to japanese cars. Stock or whatever. And a Ricer was someone who turned their japanese car into the loudest most usless and obnoxious thing ever. But hey if they show the car thats what it takes to get a trophy now days.
Oh and you fogot the pure moron. This is the guy that stuffs daddy's 3000GT into the center wall on sunrise going to in-n-out on friday night (while showing off to kids in a civic). Then gets out of the car and jumps the wall, and almost causes a wreck on the other side. Crazyest thing I have ever seen (2 cars back).
Or the guy that stuffs his ferrari into a tree while racing an NSX, which is actually kinda slow. Only saw pics but it proves this one comes will all kinds of pocketbooks.
The point is, do it to enjoy your car not to be cooler than someone else, and foget what term you fall under. Then you'll be fine.

i hate how they use the term "rice" when I would say most of the ricey cars out there arent owned by asians.
| j.reed | 11-09-2003 03:17 AM |
People that call fog light covers or EDM headlights, tints, CF this, that, are just stock fan boys. Rice IMO is anything light up that dosen't need to be, escessive body kits, window banners, funny tints, body art, crap like that.
| quest | 11-09-2003 09:17 AM |
rice doesn't mean owned by asians, it means an overly decorated (for lack of a better word) Japanese car.
my girlfriend thinks the term is offensive, but I'm sure the cars don't mind ;)

I haven't made any performance mods to my RS yet. Just STi fog lamp covers, Impreza floormats, and painted sideskirts. Half the board would call me rice for the covers (but that is how i bought them, and i like how the pink looks w/ silver) and the other half would just say it is improving the look. I don't really care though. I like it, and it makes me happier.

| Saladin | 11-09-2003 05:04 PM |
when it comes to aesthetically modfying your vehicle, rice is a fine line, but when it comes to performance modifications, theres a distinction....for instance, a 4 foot tall wing on the back of a crx to provide downforce is rice. now for aesthetics, if it involves some sort of class, for instance upgrading rs pedals to wrx (switching from the plastic to the metal....) its ok.
when it comes to aesthetics, its basically whether or not it retains some sort of class (having class would mean not being tawdry). and that, is in the eye of the beholder............just dont go spraypainting your foglight covers orange and slap em on a white wrx.... or something like that...

Mexi ride? Is that like Astro vans that are lowered, have the windows tinted limo black, and have gold spoke rims and tires that stick 6 inches out of the wheel well?

anything that has has no useful function (a BOV to atmosphere for instance :p ) is rice.
tint has function. wings and body kits are highly questionable.
stickers fog light covers sti paraphenalia is rice.
that is all.

Rice is a starchy grain unique in that it needs to germinate and go through its early development in flooded fields...
Seriously, if it makes you feel good and doesn't hurt other people, go for it.

Seriously, other members have said this, and I myself feel the same way. Do whatever pleases you. Who cares what everyone else thinks? Seems like some people have gotten use of this "rice" term down to a science, or at least that's what they think. I personally think it's quite retarded. Can anyone honestly say with any level of certainty that they can explain exactly what they mean by "rice?" To me personally, rice is what I eat for dinner.
Nuff said.

rice is the ultimate stealth if you really do have a fast car.
people would point and go...that's ricey, then you blow their doors off...
it's like a turbo conversion RS...

"rice" knows no cultural or political boundries. the black kid with the F-15 wing bolted to the back of his neon is still as "rice" as the asian kid with the F-15 wing bolted to the back of his integra.
actually...I think its kind of cool that "rice" (in whatever form you decide) knows no cultural or political boundries...kids of all backgrounds can get into it and have something common at the car shows.
I think the body kits and wings are dumb, but hey, anything that brings kids of different backgrounds together is a good thing...no matter how ridiculous it might look.

My opinion...Rice changes its meaning daily. Originally I think it was intended for Asian vehicles that were considered tacky. Next, it was adopted to cover American vehicles with Asian styling modifications such as Altezza lights. Now, it has been broadened as any modification that does not directly improve performance. The usage of Rice seems to have grown out of control and lost its meaning. Do whatever you want to your car and tell anyone who makes any comments to "Go Rice themself"

Really other than the black wheels, there is nothing in that picture that is/could be rice. So your car is lowered, alot are. The bumper isn't stock, but hey its painted, and it at least looks like it fits. Thats better than most.
I mean where's the wing, unpainted CF hood, yellow side skirts, neon colored interior. You got a ways to go man.

The term 'rice' was derived from the term 'rice burners'. American motorcycle rider used this term to refer to the inexpensive, light and fast motorcycles coming over from overseas (mainly japan). Once more import cars began coming over, and they developed their own style, the term was shortened to 'rice' and was used that way for some time (mainly for japanese cars). The term is used much more liberally nowadays, and is changing daily. The term has grown to encompass 'domestic rice' as well as the traditional.

Rice: Anything that serves to attract undue attention to your car. That's pretty much the definition that encompasses everything mentioned.

In my own opinion, the only thing that i will consider rice is making your car look like something that its not... Like hyundais with the type R stickers and the civic "sir"s . Making your car look nice is just making your car look nice. If nobody cared about the way a car looked, people would be driving around cars that looked like ford pintos. Although performance is important, the look and style to a car is also important to some people. Car shows attract tons of people and if you put in a stock looking car, nobody is going to look at it even if you have tons of mods internally. Just my 2 cents.
