Installed Legacy GT shift knob on my WRX

Just installed it last night, and wow it feels great, great combo with the kartboy sts. Y couldnt the WRX come with this knob standard? will post pics up soon!

Cool, I want to see some pictures. I've seen them in a WRX before but more never hurt.
| o2sys | 09-13-2005 05:34 PM |
The only bad part is the bottom of the LGT knob is like the OE wrx knob, it has that plastic thing to hook the boot to it, and that piece wont allow the LGT knob to screw down more....and looks like i can screw it down waay more so i cut it off and i was only able to screw down like 2 more turns...

Congrats on making the change to the GT knob. I've had mine for almost a year now and still likin' the feel of every shift
Here are a couple of pics to hold people over until you post yours:

I have the same knob in my 02 WRX. 9 x better (look and feel) then the round, MOMO shifter everyone has a hard on for.
| o2sys | 09-13-2005 06:14 PM |
Hank3 are u using the stock shifter or a short shifter?
| Xymox | 09-13-2005 06:33 PM |
...and is that a Legacy GT shift boot I spy?
| Hank3 | 09-13-2005 06:59 PM |
o2sys - Kartboy SS :)
Xymox - in the first pic, it's a momo leather shift boot. The second and third pic is the boot redlinegoods.com makes custom for us Subie owners. More info about their boots can be found here:

kool... i assume it threads right on? I have the B&M short shifter and i think it sux. It feels very clunky, clunkier than stock. It is also stock height just a shorter throw. I might want to get another one that doesnt suck ass.. Any suggestions?

Yes it threads right on (05 Legacy GT).
| WRXDriftR | 09-13-2005 10:10 PM |
its fits much better than stock, especially with the sti trim
| vipernj | 09-14-2005 01:32 AM |
anyone else running the B&M short shifter? Do you have the same clunky problem? It feels like the B&M isnt made for the car... it just feels weird. I heard that the kartboy shifter was good... any others that are good?
| emorphien | 09-14-2005 01:35 AM |
Well you can have those, I actually prefer the momo knob. pfft
| Hank3 | 09-14-2005 07:46 AM |
Kartboy is pretty much a majority preference on here. Can't go wrong with it when you get it with the bushings :)

I've had KB SS for 2 years, but now back to stock. Felt a bit too knotchy (maybe just me?), especially shifting into either first or reverse. However, KB bushings are highly recommended. Great product with awesome customer service.

and here's mine...one of the first things I did. Feels 100X better than the stocker!

Contact Subie Gal and I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help you out. Also, the folks at Wilkins Subaru had a Sales Thread up not too long ago and they were advertising the Legacy knobs for right around $60 - $70.

I got mine way back in Oct 2003 from a member here who got them from Japan and I totally agree, it is a FREAKING amazing knob. Really feels nice in the hand and definitely has very high build quality.
| o2sys | 09-14-2005 06:28 PM |
and is much heavier that stock wrx too

They may have a cleaner center console, but we've got the best seats of the bunch (03 people tie). True story.
And mf :werd: on that no car payments thing ;)

Is that ring holding up the boot? Shouldn't the grommet piece from the knob hold up the boot?

I have the B&M short shifter. Yes, it is notchy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of the short shifters out there are like that.
The Kartboy is notchy as well, but it's a little smoother than the B&M. But I the B&M is more precise when going into the shift gate.
If it's too much of a problem for you, I think any aftermarket SS will be, too. Maybe you could go back to the stock lever but get the Kartboy front and rear shifter bushings to get rid of some of the sloppiness.

that ring the same same ring that the STi uses to hold the shift boot...
and im using 3M double sided tape to hold in place...as for the LGT boot holder (that white plastic thing) i dremeled it off as it didnt allow me to screw down the knob any further
