rockblocker light kit DIY install. How hard?
So I am looking at picking up the smoked kit for my new car (99% sure Im gonna do it) and I would be installing this myself.

What do I need to install it?
How hard is it to get it on straight, like once its on, how hard is it to get bubbles out, keep it from wrinkling, and can you move it around a bit to line it up perfect?
file_id 03-27-2006 10:22 AM

It's not that hard if you use the wet method instead of the dry method. The wet method is done by using a spray bottle with a 50% alcohol/water mixture. You can then move the film while installing it.
Golfa 03-27-2006 10:37 PM

it's only hard for newbs like you dave :P

/wishes I knew this...
turbo tecnica 03-27-2006 10:45 PM

It's easy. The Lamin-X kit I got had two small tabs on the side of the film, to hold on to when adjusting position. Just put soapy water in a spray bottle and spray the surface and the back of the film and put it on if you don't think you can line it up easily. It takes about 5 minutes

Those directions are little help. I suck at rockblocker...it's way harder than tint because it is sticky right away and you can't slide the piece around while you are working on it.
hornyturbo 03-28-2006 10:38 AM

tint is sticky too
InfamousDX 03-28-2006 10:43 AM

some soapy water, the squeegie type device and later a heat gun and you're good to go.
specialev 03-28-2006 11:08 AM

I used the exact same supplies, but with hot soapy water. It's a piece of cake.
rexnprogress 03-28-2006 07:19 PM

didnt need a heat gun for mine. just remember that the ripples on the edges will flatten, you just have to massage 'em till it sticks.

I wonder why rockblocker didn't mention the wet method... I had a tough time with the bugeye headlight 'cause it's curvy and around so it's kinda difficult to align it properly.

because its not a decal, its more like a sticker. I would follow the company's directions. my fogs were easy enough using their method and they look great.

you're right on that they're some STRONG stickers...
Subie Gal 03-29-2006 05:53 PM

Did you notice much loss of usable light at night?
Zalthras 03-30-2006 01:43 AM

the lights are pretty easy

for fogs, i used dry method, and cooked the film for a couple minutes afterwards with the fogs on.

headlights, were slightly harder, but with enough slip solution (i used water only) there were no problems. I had some water bubbles afterwards, but i poked some holes with the popping tool (insulin siringe) and a week later they were gone.

Some pics here:
one yellow fog film and none on the other

I just realized i didn't really take any daytime shots of the results, mainly cause the clear looks as if I didn't put anything on in the first place. The yellow fogs just look like yellow lens fogs *shrug*.

"whiter" maybe...
"brighter"? simply impossible...
SubaruGenuineParts 03-30-2006 11:01 AM

Not at all
acutally a very strange phenomenon....

why would I lie?

hate to point to a competitor but there are some great photos here:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=835811

again, i was very suprised at the effect

dont care much for the blue with the lights off

but with the lights on the beam is so much crisper.

I really want a set of these, for the headlights. I really like the way the yellow looks on every color I've seen it on, but I haven't seen yellow on a WRB. I have an 04 WRB STi and I'm torn between yellow or the hid blue, and would really like to see a pic of a WRB with the yellows on it. I just can't seem to find one.

Maybe I missed the picture, but I didn't see an 04/05 WRB front headlight picture in the yellow.. I'll look again.

Im sure if you look around the site and check out the gallery of pics you will gain enough to know if that is what you want to do. I cant say we have a yellow on WRB 04/05 headlight picture. But we sure do have tons of pictures for you to get a good idea of what they look like

Yeah. I did look around. I think I am leaning more towards the HID Blue, because, well, I think it will just look better honestly. I did a crappy Photoshop of the yellow on my car and think the blue will just look better. I wasn't sure if someone maybe with the same setup had read this thread and had a picture to post. Thanks for all the help though.
RockBlocker 03-30-2006 03:02 PM

I would agree and get the blue. Has a better look on the car and doesnt impair some of the light at night. Driving with yellow headlights takes a while to get used too.

Yellow are great for fogs and accents

I ended up picking up some bulk sheets of Lamin-X (smoked) because I couldnt find smoked bulk rockblocker. I got 2 4x8inch sheets for like 20 shipped. First thing I am doing will be the turn signals in the bumpers. (miata)
mindchatter 04-04-2006 09:56 AM

Bump. How'd this work out for you Dave? I just rec'd my tallight kit and am apprehensive about trying it myself......wondering how it went and turned out.

So how hard is it to install the hood or bumper kit?
RockBlocker 04-04-2006 11:26 AM

not really recommended for self installation on the paint protection, but many have done it with success in teh suby community. You can always talk with Dave (aka Saggio) from Solar Reflections out of the NWIC to see what he can do for you.

I would like him to do it but its a 3.5 hours drive one way from beaverton to his shop :(

Ill probably just find a local shop to install it. You wouldn't have any recommendations for a Portland area shop would you?
wht93gted 04-04-2006 01:15 PM

I just installed the HID Blue Lamin-X on my headlights.

It wasn't too hard, but DON'T DO IT IN COOL TEMPERATURES!!!!!!!!!!

The directions said it works best between 65 & 85...so what did I do? I said "F IT" and did it when it was about 42 outside.

Well, I wound up with a hairdryer perched on my arm as I was trying to stretch the film. It's definitely NOT an easy task if it's cool outside. Wait for the warm, and it's not too hard at all.
mindchatter 04-04-2006 01:21 PM

Good feedback - thx. It's about 40 here today, so your advice is timely indeed. :)
What did you use to lube the film? Water and a drop or two of dish soap?

With regard to clearbra'ing the front end.....I watched my car get done, and there's no way I'd want to try w/o some previous experience w/tinting or something similar. It looked to be a major headache.

yeah, I used the water w/ dish soap in a small mister bottle thing that I picked up at a local drug store.

also, I purchased the clear bra kit, but I'm apprehensive to install it... I'm definitely waiting until it's about 80 outside, then I'm just going to take my time & see what I can do!
RockBlocker 04-04-2006 01:58 PM

The colder it is the more you will need heat. Try warming up the lights and keep the film inside where it is room temperature. Then while applying the and getting to the edges you will want to use a heat gun or hair dryer to seal the edges. IF YOU DONT get all the edges down it will lift and get dirt and water in there. which in turn will ruin it.
Zalthras 04-04-2006 02:58 PM

I put my paint protection kit on myself....but if I had to do it again, I'd pay a professional ~300 to get it done, it's a MAJOR PITA.

By the way, the rockblocker/3m stuff works great, ever since I put it on, I only get paint chips everywhere else on the car =D.

I just booked an appointment with Alexia's Auto Tint. They are doing the whole deal: bumper, hood, lights, mirrors and door edges for $575

This is on an 06 FXT btw.

Good luck. Did they say if the kit was pre-cut or hand cut on the car and what brand the film was?? $575 is a little high in price for the Forester, IMHO
pityr 04-04-2006 05:00 PM

They wanted $650 but I talked them down a bit. They said it was 3M and he cuts it to fit. They are supposed to be the best shop around as far as tint and paint protection goes.

The dealer wanted alittle over $600 to have thier guy do it.
RockBlocker 04-04-2006 05:04 PM

wow $650 for a hand cut installation. FYI- go look at their work before hand and see if they are cutting into the paint of the vehicles they are doing.

Ive seen one or 2 and it looked great. I guess they wrap the film around the edges and what not. Dunno how special that is but it sounded good.

I could go up to Dave in Auburn but that would cost me over $50 in gas as well as an entire day of driving.
RockBlocker 04-04-2006 08:15 PM

wow, what kind of gas mileage do u get in that thing?? I use to drive from Seattle to PDX in supped up WRX for less than $30. Anyways good luck and hope they treat you right. If not there is always Dave and me who can help out and save you some dough.

Looks good Dave. We see this a lot with the Mazda community
Davenow 04-06-2006 01:28 AM

lots of autocrosses, lots of canyon run type fun, lots of sideways jackassery

Man, I have been hanging around on the one mazdaspeed board.. Those guys know almost nothing about their cars  I mean they know some miata specific things, but general automotive, and expecially turbo motor specific knowledge is almost nonexistant on that board, and its the main board for these cars.
I am NOT bragging when I say this, but so far it seems like I am the ONLY person there that has any clue at all about how the motor in this car actually works. They can tell you what happens when you bolt x to y, but they only know this because 1 of the 3-4 vendors told them, and they have zero concept as to why it works.

When I asked about turbo porting work, they seemed to respond like they have never heard of such a thing

And they all are experienceing boost creep from intakes, but none of them has any idea its creep. All they know is you install an intake, and at about 5krpm in 5th gear or higher, you hit fuel cut. Gee I wonder what that could be  Lets see, high rpm overboost problems, that are resolved with an MBC...

So you have a factory wastegate that cannot control boost at high RPM. Sounds a bit familiar doesnt it?

The thing that sucks is that there will never be the base of minds with the mazdaspeed miata that there is with Subys. There were only 4000 made in 04, and 1400some made in 05 (plant burnt down before the rest of the 4000 for 05 were built)

They have much to learn. I will help :) I am like 75 posts deep on that board and havent pissed a single person off yet :) Wait till I post pics of my heat wrapped downpipe. Their minds will be blown yet again:lol:
