Roof liner painting part 1

Danny Boy 12-18-2006 12:41 AM

Roof liner painting
I know you can use interior spray paint to paint the plastic door cards and inserts, but does anyone know if it'll come out alright if I used spray paint to color my tan roof liner black (the rest of the interior is all black except for the roof liner), or is my best bet to buy some fabric and make my own roof liner?

Thanks,
Danny

Yes I have done it to mine and 3 others. I used the Duplicolor interior spray. I recommend the flat black.

nicmowrx 12-18-2006 02:09 AM

I just did this yesterday and I gotta say -- it came out AMAZING. Looks totally OEM.

I'll post up pics as soon as I get a camera.

I did my cards, front and rear, and rear seats, I still need to do the front seats. I also used duplicolor, and it went very well - I had lots and lots of taping and papering (I didnt take the fabric pieces out of the cards themseves), I am still deciding on the headliner, as allready mentioned, pics would be cool.

I didnt knw that would work with seats as well. Interesting.
RedMpreza 12-19-2006 04:01 PM

I saw a guy who did it in his STI, he did the entire thing, but I just did the ugly gray middle parts of the seat. It stiffened the fabric some, but with usual wear, it softened up. After doing the seats I took simple green in a sturdy cloth and went over the seats, nothing rubbs off, pretty cool..

I took some quick pictures today. Here they are.

1. Take out rear seat
2. Take out all the paneling in the car except the door panels and dash
3. Take out the visors, mirror, all lights and switches and all clips in the roof
4. Take out the roofliner
5. Take out the sunroof liner (if you have a sunroof)
6. Use flat black fabric and vinyl spray paint and paint all roof pieces, switches, and clips and the roofliner and sunroof liner with multiple light coats. I used 3 cans of spray paint to finish the job.
7. Let dry and reinstall everything.

That should just about do it.

nice i am going to do that to mine as well except the pillars are wrapped in cf ;)... was it easy to get the headliner out of the car?

more or less. about 1/2 -1 hour without rushing for the first time.
105wrx 12-28-2006 04:13 PM

cool...i got time off on monday might be doing just that....
03boxer4 12-28-2006 04:26 PM

hmmmm... I might do this in the wagon, just gotta figure out what to do with the pillars now... any cheap alternatives for the pillars?

might as well derail the rood while I have the interior out

Why not spray them too?
KAX 12-28-2006 04:56 PM

spray them with the same paint you spray your lights and roof switches with, itll turn out just the same.

sounds to be pretty easy, just a little time consuming with removing and replacing all the panels and pillars.

how long did you wait between coats?

Actually, this is kind of a funny story. I thought I could get it all done with one can of spray paint so I only got one can, pulled out the interior, did one or two coats, ran out of paint, so I had to go back to autozone. Again, I thought I'd only need 1 more can, so I only got one. I did 2 or 3 more coats on the roofliner, ran out, and had to go to a different autozone (because the one by my house ran out of that paint) to get the 3rd can to finish off the job. So, I guess I waited anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes between coats.

so basically you just spray it straight to the headliner right? :D I guess I'll do this for now coz my alcantara fabric is coming next summer... ;) thanks for the idea.
palmerx141 12-28-2006 07:08 PM

does the headliner still feel the same?

what do you do with the visors, pillars, oh snap handles, seat belt covers, light, and all the other tan stuff in there?
Danny Boy 12-28-2006 08:30 PM
does the headliner still feel the same?
Almost. Alittle stiffer.
does the headliner still feel the same?
how often do you touch your headliner. enough to make it matter?
palmerx141 12-29-2006 03:01 AM

eh i dont want paint to rub off on me if i touch it but i dont want it to feel like it was spray painted you know? What about all the rest of those tan bits though?

It doesn't rub off at all, and I just sprayed everything with the same paint
