Pics and Directions for the headlight mod! Heres how to do it for all you n00bs.
I had a set of headlights laying around my house and I was bored and decided to do the headlight mod for the hell of it.... CLsmooth had directions but his got deleted somehow. Heres some pics along with a "how to" on it.

You will need a can of high temp spraypaint (whatever color you want), some thin flathead screwdrivers, some tape (masking is best) and some extra black silicone sealant just to be safe.

1. Take of all the unneccesary hardware of the headlight. Theres 4 screws and some light harnesses.

2. Preheat the oven to 225 and when the light goes out, stick the headlight in for 22minutes. Use a timer. Do them one at a time because its much easier.

3. After 22 mins, use some oven mits to take out the headlight. Place it on a flat surface and use the mini flathead screwdrivers to pry open the 5 clips holing the headlight together. 2 on the top, 1 on the side, and 2 on the bottom. Your headlight will pry open like this.

4. After you have the headlight apart, theres 2 screw you have to remove on the inside of the lens. You will see them. This is what you should be looking at now.

5. Sand down any part that you want to paint with a fine sanding sponge until its not shiney anymore.

6. Now tape up the spots on the chrome that you dont want to paint

7. Spray on as many coats of paint as you want, Let dry in between each coat. If you encounter a run, then lightly sand it with the sponge (after its dry) and respray it and it will look perfect. Just dont get to close with the spray can while spraying and you shouldnt have this problem.

8. After the paint is dry, then bring them inside and carefully peel of the tape to reveal the chrome part that you wanted to keep unpainted. Also, put that little clear piece back on.

9. Now make sure the inside of the clear lens is really clean, and then attach your newly painted headlight face. Just 2 screws.

10. Now its time to resilicone the housing (not the lens) to assure that there is no leaks where moisture could get in. I went over it with a small bead of black silicone. After you made sure that there is enough silicone, stick the housing (not the lens) back into the oven at 225. Let it sit for about 8 minutes and pull them out and and be ready to push that lens back on. It will snap in like a glove. Here is you finished product once everything is back together, hardware and everything:

Now congrat yourself and have a drink. You did a job well done. I hope this comes in handy to some people, Let me know if you have any questions or if the pics disapear somehow.

Later on and good luck,
-Brian

those are very detailed instructions. however having done this mod a total of about 12 times now, one of those times being on an my GC8....i think that maybe i can offer some advise. and by no means am i second guessing or questioning your methods, cause you did a good job

22 minutes sounds like a really long time.....i know when we did it we did 250 at about 7 minutes..using a screw driver, flat head of course, remove the lense...after removing the two screw that go into the housing.....adn you dont really have to sand the chrome part....and extra step, although the prepping would help, but just letting others know it is not neccesarry...it does have to be high temp paint though...we used BBQ - Stove paint in a flat black...then put them back in for the said 7 minutes and reseal them , and yes the silicone is necessary....

hope that helps, and sorry for dropping my 2 cents...and a nice job to you..:D

p.s. be carefulk with RS headlights as they are glass and not plastic like the Rexes...

ATX is very right indeed.

You could probably get away with 15 minutes in the oven too.

If everyone would contribute to this thread it would be awesome. There are so many people asking about how to do this mod and everybodys take on it would be great.

Thanks guys, good luck too!

Make sure you put the headlight on the heating surface without any pressure spots. My first one I put on a cooking pan such that a corner of the bracket melted. I was watching, so I got it out before it did major damage (the light went back on the car OK).

After that, I took the pan out, grabbed some aluminum foil, and set the light clear face down, and that worked OK. Seems the pan transfered heat TOO well.

Not to take credit but I'll be first to post the "Koji mod." Differences from STR8OUT's method include:

1) The entire bezel is painted, including the blinker area.
2) Cutting a small piece of PVC section and epoxying it into the blinker spot. Koji painted his all black - I painted the inside and the front rim silver, then the outside black. Do this by basically painting the whole thing, inside and out, silver. When that is VERY dry, put "caps" of tape on both ends and paint the outside black. I epoxyed mine into place but Koji actually cut those little orange tabs off the blinker cover and epoxyed those onto the PVC pipe - this makes this piece detachable.

I agree that 20 minutes is long - I did about 10 - but I'm not sure it matters all that much. Obviously, we all like to get our mods done quickly. My gut tells me that 400 degrees for 3 minutes is a bad idea, though :)

Otherwise, STR8OUT, great thread, instructions and pics. Cheers!

Thanks for the info STR8OUT.

Wanna trade headlights. :D
juztin180 01-15-2003 10:11 AM

I agree with the time factor. 22 mins is a WHILE!

i left mine in at 225 for 15 mins w/ the oven door open. This way i can keep a close eye on them while they bake :D

also, I didn't sand either. There was a large debate between my room mate and myself about sanding it down just a little. I agreed that it would work, but all the directions i had seen before this did not mention sanding at all. It came out great without sanding. Either way would work just fine.

Brian, nice job on the how-to. I still think you should put those in your car and send me your JDMs

ATX is very right indeed. I am sure you could use other paint than high temp but I went that route cause of the heat the headlights produce. I bet you there would be no difference though with regular paint. I just dont know....

If everyone would contribute to this thread it would be awesome. There are so many people asking about how to do this mod and everybodys take on it would be great.

Actually ATX said, "it does have to be high temp paint though...we used BBQ."

just so no one gets confused and doesn't use High temp paint.
STR8OUT 01-15-2003 10:46 AM

/\-----Thanks, I edited it. I didnt catch that.
ATX25RS 01-15-2003 01:10 PM

yeah, i would suggest AGAINST non-HIGH TEMP paint....regular temp paint may start to peel or warp under the heat genereted...it all depends on the based of the paint....but engine paint would also work...and that is available in all different kinds of colors..

Pardon my ignorance
Has anyone used gloss black as opposed to flat black? Does anyone think it would make a difference?

Hey, there's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.......;) j/k

After thinking about it, IMO, the gloss black may detract slightly from the mod; i.e., when gloss black "shines" the light coming off looks white, so your lights would look "less black." I would stick with flat colors..... However, keep thinking about alternatives. Personally, I'm about to re-do mine because I just painted my stock rims graphite and it looks awesome. I'm going to re-do the headlight mod in the same color:

Thanks for the reply. YEah I guess I didn't think about the headlights reflecting off of the gloss-duh!! Flat black sounds like the way to go.

Do you have any close up pics of your wheels? They do look awsome! What kinda paint did you use?

I sent you PM so I don't hijack this thread....

yeah the rims look cool, but can you scrub them when you wash them? any special prep work? why don't you start another thread on how to do it, just like this one.

I think you could use whatever sealant you want - GD's already have black but you could use clear. More important is just to get something exterior grade and waterproof.

And thanks :D! BTW, that how-to thread is now posted.....
ATX25RS 01-15-2003 03:28 PM

from another thread on my mod.

preheat oven to 225....5-7 minutes in there pry the apart..dont forget to remove the metal clips before hand, as weel as the bulb and rubber boot....start prying them from the insides, ie part that touches the grill....its easier....the unscrew the frame and paint with high temp spray paint.....let that dry and redo backwoards...to be on the safe side you might also want to use some silicone///

and yeah clear silicone or even black are okay...try to stay away from white...

I've seen the headlight mod using the body color in the housing on a wrb wrx, but has anyone tried to match the midnight black/blue? or even to just tint the surround to a dark chrome color?
sonicblue 01-15-2003 03:39 PM

When I first did mine, I alternated coats of royal blue and black and the result was like a midnight blue. If you wanted to get the dark chrome look, I bet using Nite Shades as your paint would work, though I don't know the heat tolerance of that (should be OK since it's meant to on the outside of light housings).
trhoppe 01-15-2003 05:46 PM

I found 600 degree "semi gloss" black paint. The semi-gloss matches all the other black plastic on the front of the car PERFECTLY. I would highly recommend the semi gloss paint.
STR8OUT 01-17-2003 10:39 AM

I just wanted to bump this to let everyone know the mod is on scoobymods.com or just hit the modifications button at the top of this page.
jedimaster71472 01-17-2003 12:20 PM

Isn't there an easier way- something about breaking the orange thingy out with a screwdriver or something?

Black Chrome info for the headlight mod.

Kingronaldo 11-22-2003 05:24 PM

Would you also post pics on how to remove the headlight from the car itself...thanks...i would try to figure it iut on my own but im scared i would brake something...
