SCCA Auto-X Numbers: please advise

I'm finally gonna get some numbers, so I can stop looking like a novice. What are the size requirements? Where's a good place to buy? I'll probably get something magnetic, things to look for?

www.kandmmagnetics.com has good numbers.
You need 8" for the numbers and 4" for your class.

Also remember that your numbers and letters must have good contrast to the color of the car.

hey Jeff. stepping up are ya?
DYI will save you some money. Looks like KC has a pretty good deal on pre-cut numbers though. might be the way to go. soloracer is spendy.
DYI style: print out you numbers reversed on an inkjet, rubber cement them to the back of the sheet and cut them out with a knife or scissors. rub of the glue and extra paper when done. (repeat from a previous post) Magnet sheets for super cheap:
http://www.dickblick.com/zz289/21/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=2800
the first batch of numbers I made were too big, you might want to measure the distance of the flat surface on your door between the door molding and curved upper portion.

No such thing as 'too big'. :) You want a number that's easliy readable by timing and scoring and corner workers. Sure, you want them to look good, however, their function and contrast/color should be taken into consideration when coming up with numbers... :)

Has anyone cut letters out of magnetic vent covers? I think I have some around the house. It should work.

Here's what I had done by RallyGrafix. It's a variation on their rally decals. They also supplied the name/flag combo (including one for my co-driver which we didn't put on). Not as cheap as getting raw material and cutting letters out of course, but nothing flies off the car at speed either.

Those class letters don't look 4" tall. I'd be kinda wary of that at National events. Looks great tho!
Those class letters don't look 4" tall. I'd be kinda wary of that at National events. Looks great tho!
Exactly 4" high. Numbers are 9" high, stroke width of 2". The new rules had just come out on sccaforums and such when I was going to get them, so I made sure they met the specs for the obvious stuff.
I like the "Pray For Rain" decal from rallydecals. I probably get enough flack about it from my local people without rubbing it in by putting it on the car. 42 days of autocross last year and not a single one had rain for more than half of the runs.

I figure I would revive this dead thread with a recommendation of my own
http://www.izoomgraphics.com/
Sean does great work. I have the "Re-useable" vinyl decals on my Track Trial STi. At 145mph down the front straight of Pacific Raceways they held without the slightest sign of wanting to peel off. I was a little nervous when I first thought of using them, but they work great. Easy to apply and remove.
iZoom will also do custom design stuff. I had Sean design the logo for our race team.

I've cut my own. But to be honest, ordering some good ones will be easier and possibly cheaper. Just make sure to keep them as clean as possible to keep them looking good. Mine get pretty banged up over the season and I normally have to re-do some of them. Thick magnet material is a must.

+1 for Rallydecals.com
This is my second car that KC has helped me with, and the process was always smooth and timely.

plus some extra class panels (since both my cars see autocross and the MR2 also does SCCA TT events).

I bought a set from rallydecals as a bday present for a friend. As for me, I make do with legal size construction paper and thick painted on numbers and letters taped to the windows. My local car club doesn't mind, especially when my car is double dipped by other drivers.

I've got no problems with the quality of the stuff I got from KC. But I wish someone local to him would smack him in the back of the head and get him to paypal me my $5. Seriously, it's just $5 and he's lost a lot more than that in local business that I haven't pointed in his direction...
