Shift Knob Options for 2004 Sti
Well, If I am correct we have to use a different shft knob then the usual 2002-2003 Subaru. I would think this is due to the reverse mechanism. Just wanted to see what was available. Had an idea or thought to change mine out.

PS: Don't flame since I do like the stock knob, just want to see what else is out their

There is a STi titanium knob that either came as a standard equipment or option in the Japanese market. It will fit our STi but acquiring it will cost you in the $100+ range.

Run a search on here you should run into the post.
JDMTEG98 08-28-2003 10:54 PM

Yep, search function does not work. So we have two options stock and Sti Titanium

I guess this is the one you are reffering to, not liking it to much

Won't work on the "6 Speed Sti" (Is what is posted where every it is sold) But I also like that one better that the so called "Tit"
zacek 08-29-2003 01:43 PM

Japanparts.com has a Momo Air Race specially made for the 6MT, I wan wondering if I shave the plastic clip that hold the shift boot in the STi titanium knob for the 5MT, will that fit the STi????
dcp673 08-29-2003 04:59 PM

A few shift knobs on this site, says STi but doesn't say if they are for 5MT or 6MT

i like that one alot
wewu 08-30-2003 12:55 PM

I don't see why ne ordinary sparco or razo shift knob won't work for the STi, cuz its just the threaded screw on type and the reverse lockout isn't part of the knob. Ne one try one yet??? I mean its a lot cheaper and there's more styles and sizes to choose from.
ANZAC_1915 08-30-2003 01:14 PM

You definitely need one that says it is made for "6MT".

Guess Mr Wallace cleared that up for us ;)

Now there has to be other cars with 6MT that have shifter like ours, Euro maybe?
wewu 08-30-2003 04:27 PM

can you be a little more specific?? Ne 6mt shift knob will work or specifically 6mt STi shift knob?? Also was wondering if the knob doesn't have the shift pattern on it would it work also?

Not sure if this is complete English or questions or what. But I guess we either stick with our current shift knob (For 2004 USDM STi) But the 6 speed one is necessary because the reverse lever below the shift knob. Correct me if I am wrong.
wewu 08-31-2003 01:17 AM

JDMTEG98,

if you go out to your car rite now and try unscrewing the shift knob you would notice that the reverse lockout is independent of the shift knob. Knowing this what I don't get is y we can't use the common and cheaper razo or sparco shift knobs.

Awesome any one Know the tread size? Or what type will fit? Just Sparco and Momo?

Don't know the tread size, but the knob comes with 2 springs to adapt to smaller sized gear sticks.

No springs were needed, the knob itself is about 0.5-1mm larger than the STi stick, so simply use the provided screw to screw it on....:)
JDMTEG98 09-02-2003 08:01 PM

Think I want one that is a bit thinner and not like a fat tennis ball :(

Personally, I like the Momo Race Air I used to have on my old WRX, and now they have one for the 6MT: At Japan Parts, this is over $100, but Advanced Motorsports in the Irvine Spectrum (So Cal) just ordered me one for $75.

Pretty expensive...... paid $68 only..... and that price applies to ALL the 6MT knobs.

But then again, I got it form the main distributor for South East Asia....

I have this exact knob from my WRX and loved it as well. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 5MT and 6MT versions? I don't readily understand why the 5MT wouldn't work, but then again I haven't picked up my STi yet either.
mindchatter 09-18-2003 08:42 AM

ANY threaded shift know will work - the reverse lockout IS independent of the shifter. I have the TI version and it's much smaller than the stock and lowers the overall heaight by about 3/4" - it also feels great....and before anyone asks my car has sat in the sun (although I have tints and a UV shield on the windshield) and it barely even gets warm.

Yes, but has it sat though a subzero night and had a bare hand on it yet? That's my biggest problem with shift knobs is that they are WICKED cold in the am... cold enough it hurts my hand...

That's why I have the MOMO air leather. It has leather all the way around the ball and then aluminium under it...

Yes, any nob will probalby work if it has the right threads on it. My STi nob and old Momo worked. BUT! The 6MT nobs have a special cut-out in the bottom of them so the reverse lockout can go up into the bottom of the 6MT nob like the stock nob - and thus sit lower like it should be.

Oh so the Ti shift knob is smaller than the stock one, from the pics it looks about the same size as the stock one. Good to know, now I know which shift knob I want.

Would a Sparco knob from a Euro-spec Focus RS work? They have the same style reverse lock.
