should I remove my intake silencer part 1

SiC Stoner 12-19-2005 11:29 PM

should I remove my intake silencer
I was wondering if i should do this. I wanted my engine to sound a little bit meaner and it seems like this is a popular mod. After removing the silencer are people generally happy with the result? will it complement a bov if i decide to get one? is it easy to put back on and has anyone ever done so and y?

Sorry if this is too many questions, some answers would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't really do anything but make it so you can hear the blow off. That's about it. It takes maybe 10 minutes off and 15 minutes to put back on if you wanted to. I haven't really heard of anyone saying they weren't happy with the mod. Personally I hear bad things about changing the BOV with the stock turbo, ECU and Piping.

Also, I don't care one way or the other, but someone is going to tell you this is in the wrong forum. I'd say general, or Newbie myself, but the 2.0 forum would work too.

I haven't tried this mod yet. But you could achieve a similar result by changing your stock intake to a K&N drop in panel.

I say don't bother. I did this shortly after getting mine and finally got around to putting it back on tonight. The sound is very subtle and you can only hear it inside the car. You hear the turbo charging (a whooshing sound) and a LITTLE bit of blow-off (recirc, what have you), but not much.

I did some drive-bys at full charge and people standing outside the car couldn't even hear it... I assume you'd want to do it for the sound (so that sort of qualifies as "appearance") but it really just sounds kind of sickly.

Save your cold windy city fingers for a more beneficial mod. :)
SiC Stoner 12-20-2005 12:34 AM

^ yeah i wanted to this for the sound.
fasterthanrayswrx 12-20-2005 12:51 AM

do it up...and do the projectwrx.com intake box hack too. It made the intake even louder, i think. Almost as loud as my K&N typhoon when I had one. Although its 20 degrees out now also, so that may contribute to the loudness.

maybe I'll try to post a video of it. I mean, its LOUD.
MartinD 12-20-2005 02:06 AM

no, it is not worth the effort.
garie 12-20-2005 02:58 AM

did the intake box hack. I like it.

Pulled baffle, put a WRX intake scoop (air from under front of hood) dropped a K&N filter in the stock box and used a GP Moto 'U' to connect box and intake scoop. On my N/A car it is the single best mod I have done... for the least $$$. Smooth as silk, better sound and does not hunt at all at steady speeds in the lower gears. I give the mod an A+.
Bman 12-20-2005 07:25 PM

With my exhaust I don't think I would hear any increased noises, so I did not do this mod.
WrxRick 12-20-2005 11:00 PM

I hear mine ALOT more.

Only with the windows up and no music. But its definitly alot louder. You can just forget it if you plan on playing music alot.

Take it off, put in an STi panel filter and silicone MAF hose and your car will breathe better.

All I ever hear about adding a CAI is that the stock intake is fine up to 300hp or some number, so why does it need to breathe better?

And regarding the OP wanting to add a BOV - look around the forums - it's not recommended until your car is otherwise well built up, but it's certainly not my area of expertise - find the details in the 2.0 forum.

Being good UP TO a certain horsepower number is completely irrelevant to how WELL you can get air into the engine. A car that can get more air faster will reach that number faster than a car that has to work harder to get the same amount of air.

Basically, if you are running the stock turbo, there will NEVER be any reason for you to install a BOV unless you are installing a front mount intercooler, and in that case, you should still use one that you can recirculate back into the intake line.

After I did this I heard the WHOOOSH, Psss, WHOOOOSH< PSSS SOOO much more!!!!!! Everything is basically stock on my car.
Jsunn 12-21-2005 08:35 AM

hacking the silencer saved me $300 no need for a bov now

I hear the whole WHOOOOSH/PSSSSSSST all the time in every gear. My car is
bone stock, aside from the K&N drop-in panel filter to replace OEM filter.

BTW-It's very audible! Try the K&N first and see how that sound's.
Enriched 12-21-2005 12:15 PM

my friends did it for me within the 1st week i got my car, sounds real good.

do it.
Brahmzy 12-21-2005 02:14 PM

Just hacked it last night and I think I lost a tiny bit of low-end grunt. Will continue driving today and see.
hikeeba 12-21-2005 10:18 PM

Sic Stoner, you haven't removed your intake silencer yet? Hmm...

Sure, do it. It's completely reversible if you don't like it. I did mine the day after I bought my car. It gave me a little more detailed engine sound, but it still wasn't enough for me. the K&N gave me a little more sound, but still not enough. Now I'm running and OEM air filter with a drilled airbox (used a 1" hole saw to turn three side of the airbox bottom into swiss cheese), and I am pleased with the sound.

But then there is the desire for more boxer 4 sound out of the exhaust, but that's another story...

All in your mind ~ it breathes better and that's all that matters

Brahmzy 12-21-2005 11:55 PM

I think it's allright. It felt strong comin' home from work. Love the little sound increase. Definitely not as annoying as my TXS short ram was on my '04.
benrock05201 12-22-2005 10:09 AM

I did it about 2 months ago and I plan on putting it back soon. I grew tired of the "old man's haggard beathing" sound. I liked it at first, don't get me wrong. Maybe I'll put it back tonite.

WRXSleeper 12-22-2005 01:54 PM

i did it, but i used the gp moto elbow to replace it. it's a tiny bit louder than stock, i did it as my first mod. then combined with the IC hoses, catless upipe, and stage 1 AP you can hear it a little more.
wrb2006sti 12-22-2005 03:24 PM

i believe the 06 sti's come this way from the factory cause my 05 sti had no sound
but now my 06 has a blowoff valve type sound that you can hear in the car when in second to sixth gear above 3000 rpms just when u shift. i thought that something was wrong but i belive the intake silencer is not on the 06's.

i doubt it. Did you check? My 05 STi made quiet blowoff sounds when stock during cold days.
WikdRX 12-22-2005 11:38 PM

you might as well take it off if you want the sound. It doesnt really do anything but its easy and only takes a little while

Cashis 12-24-2005 12:21 PM

I've had mine off for a couple of months and the whooshing sound when the turbo spools is annoying me :p I'm putting it back in when I get a chance.
