Red Hazard Switch Install part 1

Red Hazard Switch Install
Hey everyone. I installed my red hazard switch today to replace the stock silver one. I browsed around a lot before installing to find a good step by step and came up with more posts wondering how to install them, than any good pictorial installs, so I figured I would contribute to the community here and do one myself. This is for an 05. I have an RS but I would assume its the same for the rex. (non cupholder under the vents etc.) This took me no longer than 5-10 minutes max, start to finish. the only tools I used were a flathead and philips screwdriver.
I did the write up and pictures after the install so the red switch is already installed in the pictures.
To start, pull back on the plastic section that is attached to your shift boot and around the shifter, wrap your fingers down the closest part of the shift boot and plastic and pull back. It will just slide out- should look like this after:

As you can see, I have placed a screwdriver on the philips head screws that need to come out next. There's two of them, one on each side of the console. After removing these screws, pull back slightly on the bottom of the plastic trim that is around your head unit, temp controls- enough that you can slip a flat head screw driver horizontally between the dash plastic and the trim.

slowly wiggle the flathead toward the top of the console toward the vents, theres just two tabs that pop out, no screws. Now you will be left with this:

At this step, you use the philips screwdriver again, to remove three screws from under the vent section of the dash. theres one on each side and one in the middle. I have placed a screw driver in the picture to show where they are:

With the screws out, you can simply pull the vent section out with the hazard switch and all. from here, just unplug the wire from the back of the switch, depress the tab at the top of the switch and slide it out. slip the new switch into place, plug it back in and reverse the steps!

Now you can go and enjoy your new interior blinggg! Good luck and I hope this helped, although it is one of the easier installs you can do :)

Finished Product!!
^^no offense, but it is just a switch...
i agree and feel the same way, but a ton of ppl are crazy about it...
Sylon 04-04-2007 06:57 AM

Thanks for that write up, you helped me figure quite a few things out, more than just a switch :)
^^no offense, but it is just a switch...
It is just a switch, but to get to it you need to remove a whole swack of interior parts. I've done a lot of work on Subies, and yet this simple little switch was a challenge. If you go in there all monkey fisting everything, you'll end up with broken interior parts.

good write up, OP.
mikee_7id 04-05-2007 11:16 PM

I think the Switch add's a nice touch.

Done with the Type RA-R Drill Trim, puts a certain look to the car.

Now I just have to wait till Monday...

Bump from the dead but does the JDM hazard button come with a backlight? I've seen some cars have the center triangle sign illuminated.
d0ugch0i 09-17-2012 12:25 PM

nice quick write-up. very easy to understand especially with pictures lol.
CarverSnell 11-28-2012 09:23 PM

Anybody have pictures of it lit up at night?
emazz104 11-28-2012 10:23 PM

I don't have a picture but it looks just like the normal hazard when the interior lights are on. The triangle is illuminated.
tersplat 11-28-2012 10:47 PM

What he said^ I did mine last night. My neighbor sold his 04 wagon and had the red switch left over and gave it to me for free, so I put it in. I like it, and I like the backlight behind the triangle. I can't remember if the old one lit up behind it or not. I never really payed attention to it.It took me about 2-3 minutes max with mine. I have a cup holder right below my switch and pulled the cupholder out, unscrewed the cupholder, popped out the vent surround and popped out the switch, unplugged it, plugged the new one in, and put everything back together. Was super easy, and looks nice now.

My 04 lights up, so did my 06 (and my red switch.)
I don't believe the bugeyes do, although I could be wrong.

Another thanks to you. With write up 5 min. W/o write up ~1 hour w/possible broken dash parts because... "you wouldn't like it if I were angry". For real tho, any person trying to guess how the dash comes apart if there are no obvious screws etc is bound to get frustrated, this saved me from that, thanks.
Red switch looks great.
edit- don't know if it lights up, have to wait until tonight. 07 WRX

i'm still trying to find a way to explain to my girlfriend why it is absolutely necessary to buy a different colored hazard switch... it's not going well.

nice install. i would use plastic prybars instead of a flathead though.
Smurftastic 12-13-2012 05:28 PM

Dude you aren't married yet, use your damn money

Hahahaha. Love it. But no ****, its a $30 part. Skip out buying a case of beer one night and just buy the hazard button.
Jdmillest 12-13-2012 08:16 PM

I believe I will be doing everyone a favor asking this......SHIFT KNOB > ?
Drk93TT 12-14-2012 09:31 PM

I installed mine tonight as well.

Lol, this is a cheap mod! Just do eeeeet. I put the red hazard in a few years back and my wife noticed it and commented that she liked it and wished our Outback had a red one. If ya need to justify the small expense say it's a safety upgrade: red=emergency so it's easy to find!
Preludicrous 06-18-2015 10:51 AM

I'm about to dip my center console and I could not figure out how to remove the hazard/vents. I've done the shift and hvac bezels a million times but never the vents. This write up is just what I needed. Also thanks to all you red hazard button fanboys I was able to find a black one for next to nothing on eBay.
Preludicrous 06-26-2015 11:18 AM

Put in my black button last night and found something interesting...my silver button is actually red and just painted silver. So this begs the question, is it worth $25-$40 to buy a red one or spend the time to scrape the silver paint off.lol
