Sparco seat mounting hardware question part 1

Sparco seat mounting hardware question
<preamble>I know this has been asked a million times, but I'm feeling pretty stupid because the threads are overloaded with information and I can't figure out what I need.</preamble>

So with flame suit on... I'm looking to get a Sparco seat, and need to get the mounting hardware for it. I have an '04 STi. I *think* this is what I need to get the job done:

1. Seat

2. Seat brackets from Sparco (aluminum, steel, whatever)

3. Sparco universal sliders/track set

4. Sparco Impreza Seat Base

5. Sparco 50001 hardware kit

So I figure - bracket attaches to seat, attaches to slider, attaches to seat base, attaches to the car, without any drilling required. Would that work or am I missing something?

Thanks :)
Raj

I just bought a used seat and had the same questions. I called up Rally Sport Direct who told me what I needed and shipped it all out to me the same day. But anyway, yes, that's what you need, but also get the 50001 hardware kit ($7) which has all the bolts and stuff. You only need the sliders if you want to use them. There are a few seats like the Pro2000 that can technically be mounted directly to the base, but you have no height or angle adjustability, and it looks like the side mounts are a lot easier.

The following PDF file from Sparco gives instructions on mounting: http://www.sparcousa.com/resourceFiles/20.pdf

You will need, from what I can see, a socket wrench with 13mm socket (for Sparco nuts), 14mm socket (for 4 in-car bolts), and (what I found I am missing) a 6mm Allen wrench. I seem to have every size up to 6mm, and some 7mm, but no 6mm. Without that there is no way to get the nuts on. Anyway, I believe your logic is correct -- no drilling is supposed to be required, and definitely not on the car (I've heard some people have had to widen their base holes where the sliders attach slightly, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

Also I gather that the aluminum mounts are slightly lower than the steel ones, which may be what you want, or not.

What was your total cost on that stuff?

I have two Sparco Evos in my Miata. It might be nice to pick up some mounting hardware so that I can put the passenger-side one in the WRX.

here's what I sourced for my Torino install (back in the day)
sparco seat hardware bases $60
sparco seat hardware sliders $55
sparco seat hardware adapters $40
A month or so. Think it will take that long to install?
Ever order anything from Sparco? In my experience, it'll take that long to get it in. Who knows, it might be longer, if it's not "in stock", according to Sparco USA. Best we could guess is that "in stock" means "in stock in Japan, so we just have to ship it, but won't also have to manufacture it".

That said, I love my Sparco Pro2000s. Absolutely adore them. But it was a solid month before we got them.

In case you don't already have a vendor picked out, here's another source for Sparco seats:
http://www.soloracer.com/sparcoseats.html

In Brett's seat guide, it is mentioned that the Rev has side mounts only, so you should use the side mounts. I believe that means the sliders wouldn't work but I'm not sure, since our Pro2000s were either side mount or bottom mount, and we mounted ours on the bottom. Best bet is to contact a vendor and ask. I've always found Brett at SoloRacer.com to be very helpful.
RallySport Direct 12-23-2005 06:25 PM

Yep, Looks like you have everything you need to get that baby installed. ;)
If anyone has any questions regarding Sparco seats and accessories, please give us a call. We have done many seat installs and we keep most seats/accessories in stock. We also are a Sparco Whoesale Distributer, so if we dont have it in stock, we can tell you if sparco does and how long until we can get it for you.
Thanks

Be prepared to be terribly frustrated. I got my missing allen wrench, then found that my cheap socket set isn't bloody deep enough, so I'm crushing my fingers with a set of pliers. I've now found that at it's widest position the seat brackets are 15" apart while the Pro2000 seat is 16" wide, so it doesn't fit. There's another set of holes farther apart in the base that would probably solve this, but the holes in the sliders won't fit them. I'm now at a loss for what to do other than drill extra holes in my sliders. Unless I'm supposed to cram the seat in there and have the sliders bent outward so they look like they're going to break.
re92 12-23-2005 09:49 PM

Well, that sounds intensely bad. Just the type of thing I don't want to get into. Let us know how you end up solving it.

Hehe, he only beat me at all the other events. And I only drove with warmer tires. And ran in better weather. And had less of a sandy clam syndrome :alien:

I am looking to install a Torino in my '06.....just the drivers side.

Is it possible to remove the stock seat and use all the stock seat hardware...ie..the base and slider, on the Torino???
It seems that the '06 slider has a sensor that adjusts the airbag deployment based on seat position and I would like to leave that functional
Craigs 12-24-2005 12:36 AM

Raj - if you need help with the install I have put my Sparcos in and taken them out several times. In fact I'll be installing a new one in the next few weeks.
WRX_Mundi 12-24-2005 02:10 AM

Well, I drilled new holes in the sliders and everything fits. Except the sliders are now 2 inches further apart so the adjustment-tube doesn't fit, which means no using the sliders unless I hand-craft something. Even with the side rail I'm sitting a lot lower in the car than with the stock seats -- mounting directly to the floor would make me look like a Grandma trying to peek over the wheel! It'd save time at the Evo Challenge school though .

I'm debating, since I have the Pro2000 with the bottom mounts, mounting the seat directly to the slider using longer studs and thick aluminum washers. It wouldn't be adjustable on the fly like the side brackets. Alternately I could try to get a new wider slider-tube.

P.S. Weighed everything. Stock seat including all hardware is 45 pounds, which is the same as what I measured back in 2003. Sparc Pro2000 with base, sliders, aluminum side brackets, and all padding comes to 33 pounds. An Evo or Sprint would be 3 pounds lighter, and losing the sliders would save a couple more.
CTKAG 12-24-2005 05:20 PM

Raj - I believe there are two Impreza seat bases available - one is the base you have pictured, the other is a flat mount bracket. The first one keeps the seat at about the stock height in the car, the flat mount really lowers the seat by a couple of inches. Both of my seats have the flat mounts (with sliders) - Ir I was the only person that drove the car, I'd get rid of the sliders, but since ya never know who might want a ride....

I do have one spare slider if you decide you want it.

Bump from teh dead.

I'm taking the Sparco Evos out of my Miata since it's a DD now and putting them in the WRX. I'm debating whether to have the local race shop (Piper Motorsport) fabricate the brackets or whether to just use the off the shelf ones.

From the looks of it, it's cheaper to go with the prefab stuff, but not by as much as I'd like:

OTS Sparco Impreza seat base (lower bracket): ~$200
+ Side brackets: $50 = total of $250

Custom brackets: 3-4 hrs of labor per side ($85/hr): $255-$340

Either way I'll need sliders.

Is there any reason to do one over the other? Are my prices on the OTS stuff off? My inclination is just to get them to build some since the cost is similar, but if the OTS stuff is cheaper than I think it is and just as good that would probably save me some cash.

Thanks,
John

I have everything you need to install an Evo on the drivers side for sale if you are interested, it's just sitting in my closet. Drivers base, slider, side mount already bolted together waiting to go in a car.

I have the sparco steel OTS base and if something custom was made stronger than I would go with that. I have had some bending of my sparco mount and all the car is used for is autocross.

PhilC 02-20-2007 10:49 AM

Our Sparco mounts took some Dremel work to make the holes line up. It wasn't a true bolt and go. So take into account the time it will take you to do that when thinking of the cost comparison. Or if you're impatient like me the time it will take to source new bolts, a 12x1.25 tap, re-tapping the holes for two bolts, drilling out one that was too badly damaged to re-tap on the passenger side, sourcing a longer bolt a pair of flat washers and a nut to match for the hole you drilled out.

Needless to say it would have saved me several hours of frustration if I had just Dremeled the brackets to make them fit to begin with.
sciolist 02-20-2007 11:02 AM

One thing to consider is that you may not be able to get the seat position you want with OTS hardware. I have Recaro seats, brackets and sliders with OMP bases. No problems whatsoever with any of that hardware, other than the fact that it leaves me too low and rearward in the car. That's fine for the shotgun seat, but I had to fab up shims for the driver's side. My approach to this was to rip the sides off of square tube to make channel in the desired height. That allows enough clearance to advance the seat forward as well.

If you were going to have the bases done custom, you could probably pre-fit them and take all of this into account from square one. The shims do work well because they're adjustable.

Whatever you do, make sure you can get the seat far enough forward. In order to make that work, I need front mounting holes further forward than the typical aftermarket base will allow. I'm just under 5-9 with about +2 ape, so not a Lilliputian. If you set the base height correctly, but don't advance it enough, you'll have to add height to get the advance.
crystalhelix 02-20-2007 12:57 PM

I just mounted my seat to the bracket with no sliders and it actually ended up in a ok position, guess I am lucky, lol.

It also lower's the fat-ass driver (in my case) by 2-3 inches and that helps the CG a bit...
Draken 02-20-2007 02:44 PM

Are the Sparcos just stupid heavy or something? My Momo Start came in at 14.2 pounds, and my two brackets came to 1.4 pounds with the 8 bolts/washers, for a total of less than 16 pounds in the car. Compared nicely to my 36 pound stock seat. Of course, for my 1,490 pound car, that was a healthy chunk of weight to lose.

Chris H.
Butt Dyno 02-20-2007 02:50 PM

The Evo is a little bit over 15 lbs, IIRC. Your brackets were only 2 lbs total? Including the bases?
mav1c 02-20-2007 03:17 PM

Yeah. I ended up losing about 25 lbs total. I had custom seat bases made that are beefy, so they're not exactly light, but I know they're strong. I'm just doing track days so I'm not too concerned with the weight. Wanted the seats more for the tight fit and the ability to run a 6-point harness.
ToddStratton 02-20-2007 03:25 PM

Good luck with the install. I have an Evo L and just as wRX Mundi posted, it is too wide for the Sparco pre-drilled holes. Had to make new holes in the sliders to get it to bolt to the base.

Todd
