Spec C Wannabe ?

I am thinking about converting my 2004 USDM STi to some of the JDM Spec C exterior features.
Does anybody know which are the right side skirts to use? which Impreza model? Are they plug and play or do the STi skirts have different mounting points? I am hoping to avoid body work, filling or painting...
Can I remove the front side air splitters without damage?
What is the best/least expensive (no painting) way to convert the mirrors to black color? New mirrors or are just skins available from the dealer?
Is a 2004 JDM Spec C rear spoiler the same as a regular WRX or does it have risers? I only have small pictures for reference.
Thanks a lot for helping

there's hole's under the splitters, and the spec c has no side skirts. so you'll have holes on your sides and bumper . so, no you can't do it without body work. even if you trade front bumpers w/ a wrx, you still got the sides. It is an exterior feature. It's very prominent in the front grille.

Actually, the 2004 JDM STi RA Spec C came with a slightly different oil cooler which is ~$1000. The one you are most likely thinking of is the 2000-2003 STi oil cooler which came in a aluminum finish with the pink STi logo- that one is ~$1800. Both can be sourced fairly easily, but that is a hefty price tag for either, granted they are high-end coolers compared to most. Just thought I'd give a heads up.

Check out the Subaru Japan pages for some better pics/specs on what's on there. IMO, the Spec-C RA looks way better (more like a street car), and you can buy that Nurburgring Decal for it
Here's the Impreza Japan site with the Spec-C:
http://www.subaru.co.jp/impreza/wrx/index.html
The basic stuff is clear lights and the smaller WRX spoiler, and a debaged trunk.

You can go from a WRX front to an STi front just as easily as you can go from an STi front to a WRX front. There wont be any holes.
Just move the skirts and get a color matched plate to fit into the existing holes.
Dont forget the roof scoop either! I would not attempt a type-RA conversion. The genuine wing and wheels are very expensive....but if your wallet is deep im sure it would turn out great.

Actually the Spec C (and USDM RS models) have the holes pre-drilled. They just have a plastic body plug in the hole that is covered in undercoating ;)

if you're gonna do a jdm spec-c conversion attempt, do one for a type RA, they're a little bit flashier and are drop dead gorgeous.
sti side splitters, v-limited, carbon fiber spoiler, roof scoop, ***nurburgring decal*** and you're good to go.

Thanks everyone for input ! I prefer the minimalist look of the Spec C to the RA. I find the front of the USDM STi to be very busy looking and less than coherent visually. Some of course will like it, others won't.
Since I am also weary of not being able to see cars behind me because of the wing (which I am fine with other than that), I am trying to tie all the fixes together with a quasi Spec C conversion.
Jamie,
Thanks for the link - scalps are ordered  . I would love a hookup on part numbers for base side skirts from a WRX or TS in Aspen White if anyone knows them.

Well..fastwrx.com sells them for like $30 but on ebay..there is a sticker shop in China or something that had them much cheaper.
they are a PITA to get off the backing--getting every little letter off was very tough.
came out great!
now all i need is the Rear sticker or badge (can't decide between the Spec C Limited "Spec C" decal or the Type RA Carbon badge*real of course*) then I'm done.
actually thinking of doing a 05 rear bumper as well.
Need to shave the holes on the side skirts..but I change my mind so much I'm afraid I'll want one day to put them back on.The Tape I have on there now hides the holes pretty well so I
m good for now.
-I just got like $3000 so I'm gonna do a couple things more to the motor and pay some bills:
thought about the Spec C oil cooler (for the track).there was a genuine Spec C oil cooler on ebay for like $200 a week ago! Should have got that!It was all black..not the S202 one which def looks Better peaking through the Front bumper.
-Def getting the 12L Tank and Auto Spray switch.
I honestly get more people commenting on my car now then I did when it was stock..It looks just as good either way but everyone Gives me Thumbs up and all that now for some reason, thinking they wouldn't.
It is borderline Ricey (w/ the wing) so I've thought about doing a trunk swap..but there again...I change my mind so I may want the Stock wing back on some day.

Mrfairlady,
Your car was part of the inspiration for what I am doing though I will pass on the wing because I want a little more stealth if I go this route. Great job on yours! :disco: Did you buy new front bumper covers (over the fog light openings) or did you remove the STi decals?
Has anybody tried to find the plugs for the holes in the side skirts that another poster mentioned?

Thank you sir!
I'm not sure what these Plugs are they are speaking of.
The only thing I know to do is to fill them.
I too have thought about a Stock WRX wing.
the Spec C has a ALum trunk lid as well..not sure if ours are Alum.Someone needs to try the ol' Magnet trick to see.Mines in the shop right now.

I forgot which issue of SCC it was, but they had an article with a 2004 Spec C but in England?
It was San Remo red with a JDM Sti front lip, stock WRX side skirts, roof scoop, 17" golds, and a CF spoiler. I dunno which engine was in it but it looked nice.

Hmm I should have looked at the side more closely to see if the holes were just covered, I am thinking it was a solid piece because when I washed it is was a smooth piece.

That sucks man...
Not meaning to hijack this thread, and kinda OT but I've got to ask. Having owned both a Spec-C and a USDM STi how would you compare the 2? I am very curious about the difference in the feel of a V8 twin scroll and the USDM 2.5 STi engine.

time to vent a little.
Why do you want to look like a "spec C"
the "spec C" was created to look like the base model Impreza.
The USDM STi is close to a "Spec C" 17" version (Suspension, and amount of sound deadening).
So all this "Spec C" look alike stuff is "Hey!! I want to look like a Model that looks like another model but it's cool to look like the f4st4r model but not the model t3h f4574r one w45 b457ed off of"
ok i'm done.
Either way for the record, I love all Spec Cs no matter what I say.
And I understand wanting to emulate one but...ok I said I was done.
Either way keep trying to look like a Base Model Impreza but F4574r!!!!!1!!!S13393rs!!!1!

lol, that was an interesting vent....
Well the spec-c as you probably know is far more than just a different looking USDM STi. Sure our STi shares some stuff with the spec-c, but it also lacks A LOT of spec-c features. IE, lightweight AC system, no undercoating, oil cooler, 12L IC sprayer tank, different HVAC control, pedals, roof vent, entire engine, trunk lid, and sooo much more.
Personally, I like a car that is so focused like the Spec-c. It is meant to be driven hard and tracked, nothing more, and it doesnt try to be anything else. Hence, the reason I am trying to make my car like a spec-c. Whoo needs that big wing? I can save weight there. Side splitters? Cool, but dead weight. Stuff like that.
The sidemarkers, though, are basically JDM bling, but I do like having that added security for all the freeway driving I do....especially the way Tucson folks drive...

The appeal of the Spec C to me, is the fact that it's the fastest Impreza. For many folks, myself included, we consider fastest = best.... especially when we read all the magazine reviews that put the USDM STi behind the Evo in most respects. Then we see the Spec C trouncing the Evos in the the Best Motoring videos and brit magazines and wonder... "why can't we get that here??" As for the cosmetic differences, I kinda believe that if Subaru didn't think their FASTEST cars (spec c and wrc car) needed sideskirts, then i don't need em either....
Why do you want to look like a "spec C"

i agree for the most part,
Isn't the fastest Spec C the "Impreza WRX STi Spec C Type RA"?
Not sure but the Type RA is the model with the 4 way adjustable struts, Rear Sway bar, Roof Scoop, STi Carbon Fiber Wing, Aluminum Trunk, STi Splitters, V-Limited front lip. The wing, splitters, and v-limited add dead weight, yet it is the fastest of the bunch? And it is a 2.0ltr!! :w00t:
The Base Model or 'strippy' Spec C comes with the same strut and spring assembly we get on the USDM STi, and it comes with Manual HVAC controls, Base Model Impreza seats, carpeting. etc. The 16" Version comes with the Subaru 4 pot brakes (non brembo), the base model Spec c is usually for Rally teams that plan to rip the whole thing apart especially the interior. I don't understand emulating that.
now emulating the other Spec Cs i can understand, Uprated Struts, Lower springs, and all the other fun stuff listed prior by Phil Jr. and a few other goodies to help w/ it to save weight.
Emulating the Spec C Type RA could be fun too.
I personally would love to have all the goodies off a Spec C Type RA (especially the Windsheild washer tank).
Either way, everyone will do as they please and I am by no means trying to convince someone otherwise. Enjoy and one of these days my USDM STi will have a good number of Spec C Type RA goodies added to it j/ no Badges :alien:
keep up the good work everyone and as always post pictures!!
