Stainless Mesh Grills
A while back I read a post by someone saying they were going to be making a stainless mesh grill kit for the Rs. I havent heard anything on that since and my searches havent unveiled any new information. Did these projects end or are they still being made and how much would one cost me. Pics would be nice also.
Thanks

Hey is this what you were talking about...
<IMG SRC="http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/UserPics/2138/car2.jpg" border=0>
I did make them and sell them but i don't have the time right now to do it, maybe when summer comes around i will make them again.

I made those for my car, but decided I don't like them that much. I made the one for the front grill (on both sides of the six-stars badge), and for the hood vents. Don't have one for the hood scoop, but it's not that hard to do. If people want me to, and ImprezedRS doesn't mind, I can make more of them and sell them for something like $10 or so, $15 painted a color of your choice (I already have a set of red and chrome ones). If you have the time, you can do it yourself rather easily, but for the lazy... [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] I can put up pics of what mine look like, if you or anyone else is interested. I attached them with very thin wire in 2 or 3 places to the existing honeycomb design.

ImprezdRS: Where do you get the stainless mesh to make those grills? I was wanting to do something like that myself, but didn't know where to look for materials.
The gearhead here at work didn't really seem to know where to start looking either.
thx

any LARGE hardware store should have that type of mesh... shouldn't be that hard to find...

I got mine at Lowe's, it's called Gutter Guard. A sheet about 2 feet by 6 inches is something like $2, and you just have to take your time cutting it to fit.
| iodine23 | 02-15-2001 09:39 AM |
I'll check the Home Depot and Lowe's out then. I was wondeirng if they'd carry it there.
I think the guy here at work was thinking something more specialized... he started rambling about some metalworker in town and getting custom metalwork done. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Howdy,
These photos have been posted before but I thougth they fit the topic perfectly. I have been working on the grill below for some time now. The mesh is mild steel so I had to paint it many times to combat rust. I had to cut out all the black plastic from inside the opening and most of the steel box that the license plate attaches to. I left a tiny bit in case I get in trouble for not running a front plate and need to reattach it. The grill is fastened using small zip ties. This required a few small holes to be drilled into the bumper. The grill is surrounded by a 3/16" diameter wire which makes the whole assembly fairly rigid and it has proven itself to be very effective in keeping stones and other objects from striking the radiator. The outer wire is covered in rubber so that I don't scratch up my paint and it keeps the edges of the grill from rusting and staining my car. The next version will fit perfectly and look like a stock part. These grills take A LONG TIME to make so progress is slow. I hope you enjoy.

AaronRS,
I would love to get one of those if you want to make one for me. I have been trying to do the same thing you have done there for a few months now with no success. Home Depot just doesn't have any good quality stuff that I can find.
One quick note you might want to know is that I have noticed that each year the bumper hole where your grill goes changes sizes. I am not sure why but I thought you might like to know that.
Any tips on where to get parts for your grill? Great job on your grill by the way...
Cheers and Beers,
~skywalker

skywalker,
Thank you for the comments. This grill is the product of over 40 hours of work!!! No kidding. So you can understand that I am not interest in making any more at this time. And as for where I got all the materials....Home Depot! I got very creative with the raw materials. Here is a list:
-1 roll of chicken wire. Found in the garden section. This takes a lot of care when trying to make it flat. It comes in a very tight roll.
-1 3/16" Dia. wire. The wire is sold next to the suspended ceiling tiles. It is used to hold them up in buildings.
-1 roll of 1/4" ID plastic tubing. This milky white tubing is sold in the plumbing section by the roll or foot. I ran a slit down the length of the tube and slipped it over the outer wire.
-1 roll of fine steel wire. This was used to sew the thick wire edge to the mesh!
-lots of Crazy Glue to seal every bit of the plastic tubing around the outer wire.
-1 can of silver spray paint.
-White zipties.
One of the trickiest parts is making a proper template of the bumper opening. Then you have to bend the outer wire for the grill to fit exactly!! This is very hard! Especially because this was all done by hand, with two pairs of pliers.
So there you go. I don't recommend starting this one if you want quick results. Good luck.

I have done a similar project on my grill. will try to get some pics up. Like the others have said... lots of cuts and 4 letter words. my advice... make one out of cardboard and use that as a size template. I also used "gutter guard" with pliers

I'm about to run to Home Depot in the morning to pick up a bunch of gutter guards and plastic zip ties...Gonna open up the hood scoop, put some mesh in it to prevent debris from getting in, and then look at meshing around the grille area...we'll see...hehe...

This is exactly what I am trying to do also. I had to have my bumper replaced, so I had the shop save me the old one (they cut into three pieces to fit into the trunk). I have been trying a couple sizes of mesh (hardware cloth they call it - go figure). I have been working from the backside of the openings which makes it alot easier to form over the openings. My current problem is that I think that I'll have to remove the bumper skin to install these. I'm thinking that some sort of adhesive can be used to hold them in place since I don't really want to put holes in the skin. The prototypes fit tight as a glove but I'm wondering if I am making to much work just to do this....
Anyone know whats involved in removing the front bumper skin?? Or have comments on my approach to this?????
Thanks!!!

There are better materials out there then gutter guard.Go to home depot look at the Husky tool box display and look at accesories fr them. Ill let you guys figure out the rest.No fuss no muss and NO scratches from metal gutterguard.
Rudy ...... Id post pics but dont have a scanner.

The only problem with Gutter Guard I can see so far is it's sharp after you cut it (Dremel to the rescue!)...But yes, it may rust...I spent like 2 1/2 hours in Home Depot today picking up a bunch of stuff, and the best stuff I could find in the store was the Gutter Guard.

gutter gaurd here too, c/o home depot.
| iodine23 | 02-26-2001 10:49 AM |
Since my last posts, I too have picked up the gutter guard from Home Depot.
I found that one full sheet folded around properly can fill the hood scoop and hook onto the three front screws to hold the guard in.
I also found that this stuff is sharp when you cut it, go figure! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
Does anyone know if this stuff is stainless or not? It doesn't say, but I'm assuming not. I've primed and painted my mesh an "aluminum" color which looks shinier than the mesh and also will resist rust.
I'll post some pics when I'm all done with the grill and vents.

I didn't take any chances with my gutter guard. I bought some primer and aluminum color spray paint and painted my mesh. Did like 2 coats primer and 2-3 coats paint.
The aluminum spray paint makes the mesh a little shinier and more reflective at more angles than the standard look of the gutter guard. And it provides a nice coat of rustproofing for the mesh, just in case it isn't rustproof.
