STI steering wheel part 1

WRXThis 06-11-2003 06:06 PM

STI steering wheel
Anyone else want one of these bad boys in their WRX? I wonder how much bank they go for. I am scared to ask.
superg 06-11-2003 06:15 PM

Only trivially smaller
As you weigh the cost benefit of the STi wheel, bear in mind it is only 3/8" smaller than stock WRX. Marketing makes it sound like a rally wheel.

steering wheel - $386.60
center piece/airbag - $533.60

total for the sti steering wheel: - 920.20

It's more of the bling bling factor then anything. Oh and the 3 spokes are sweeeeeeeet too!
couch 06-11-2003 06:25 PM

Oh I know this will seem absurd, but I can still wish can't I?

Is anyone planning on making an aftermarket steering wheel that retains the stock airbag?

Thanks Jamie. How about the STI blue carpet?
SilverBoosted 06-11-2003 08:56 PM

The previous STi steering wheel looks hella bling :) and can be had for bout $250-$300 on ebay including the airbag.....

the Sti blue carpet can be had here http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=369451

The 04 STI wheel will be tough to put on a WRX. The cruise control is entirely on the wheel, the WRX probably does not have th ewiring to handle it.
KIMUTAKU 06-11-2003 09:36 PM

900+ for the steering wheel??

omg...it sure is nice, but it's still kinda big from what i have seen...

what do these look like? anyone have links to a pic or something? i love the new STi wheel too but i'm not going to spend a thousand dollars on a steering wheel :(
WRXThis 06-12-2003 01:08 PM

The old STI wheel looks like your current Momo wheel except the center piece is silver. It's still the 4 spoke design. I must have a new STI steering wheel!
SilverBoosted 06-12-2003 01:37 PM

Silver center which is also bigger than the WRX momo badhe also has red stitching...leather feels better as well...
Adiliyo 06-12-2003 04:10 PM

still 4 spoke though...oh well...maybe the 04 STi wheels will get cheaper when the 05's come out....probably not, but i can wish :)
STi Boy 06-12-2003 05:01 PM

pfft...

my 91 corolla sedan has 2 spoke!!! its left to right...lol.:p
Takashi 06-12-2003 05:39 PM

how's the sti ver7 (uk) compare to the stock 02-03 wheel we all have??? i'm thinking about picking one up from the private classifieds section (no airbag and no cover...): thoughts?

WRXerist 06-12-2003 05:56 PM

I have the version 7 STi steering wheel installed in my ride. Not sure if it's smaller than the stock WRX though. But it sure does look prettier. Add 5HP to my desire.:D

SilverBoosted 06-12-2003 07:54 PM

WRXerist thats the steering wheel I have as well...
Looks pretty nice along with STi ebrake, red stitched Leather shift knob and 04STi guage cluster.......
Takashi 06-12-2003 09:37 PM

wrxercist:
that's exactly what i was looking for! a pic! thanks...
see, the one i'm thinking of getting is wheel only, so i'd have to put my airbag and my cover on it... is the wheel itself identical to ours? if so, it would be a waste for me to do it. and does it have the cruise control lever?
thanks
greg
Adiliyo 06-12-2003 11:53 PM

Thanks WRXerist!
that's what i thought it looked like, does out cover (02/03) fit on there? if i could get it w/o airbag it might be worth the price for the red stiching :p

my '86 tercel had a 2 spoke too! and no power steering from what it felt like, i got muscles just driving that thing around in parking lots!
WRXerist 06-13-2003 02:51 AM

yes the stock air bag section will fit in the STi steering wheel perfectly. you will have to swap out the cruise control if you want to retain it. I did on mine. The JDM wheel didn't come with a cruise control. it isn't hard at all to do the swap. the whole work took me only like 30 minutes to complete considering i have never done it before.:disco:

you think you bad, my dad used to own a really old toyota. i think it might have been a '79 corolla or something. forgot what year it was but it's damn old and i use to drive it around a lot before i upgraded.

i just got a new shift knob to match the red stitched wheel. got a momo race airleather in red. pretty cool.

will be looking to get that STi e-brake handle with the red stitching. oh yeah, forgot to mention that i also got a custom set of shift boot with red stitch as well as e-brake cover.
SilverBoosted 06-13-2003 12:15 PM

WRXerist can I ask where you got the red stitched shift boot and ebrake boot?? do you have a pic?? Ive been looking for a red stitched shift boot (not the zerosports one) for my WRX and the ebrake boot sounds intriging....
Adiliyo 06-13-2003 12:22 PM

hmm....since you can swap out the airbag part maybe i'll try it...after my sti guages!

has anyone found the STi e-brake handle for a reasonable price? i saw it somewhere for almost a hundred dollars!? sounds a bit pricey for a piece that just has red stiching :)

you beat me there, sounds worse than my tercel, when i first got the tercel to drive (@16) i figured it had 5 gears since all the other cars i had driven until then had 5 gears and the gear pattern thing on the knob was gone, so i tried to shift into 5th a couple times and i didn't realize i was shifting into 3rd again...(it confused me that 5th revved so much higher than 4th...) i used to be stupider than now :p
WRXerist 06-13-2003 12:51 PM

The shift boot and e-brake boot are custom made. I bought a set from a vendor but didn't like it. It didn't fit too well so I am sending it back. I have a friend who owns a shop that can make me custom shift boots and e-brake boots. I want to design it and make it fit our Impreza better than what's out there. And no it will not costs $100, maybe $30 to $35 for BOTH shift boot and e-brake cover.

You guys think there will be a lot of interest in this? If so, I can make a bulk of them with any color combination, stitch color, etc.

The cheapest STi e-brake handle I have found is through Subydude (www.subydude.com). I think it's like $120 shipped.
SilverBoosted 06-13-2003 02:04 PM

I have the ebrake, steering wheel and shift knob (STI red stitched)
but I really really want a red stitched shift boot. The zerosports one is nice but it has the huge zreosports logo on it plus its $120+-... Do you have a pic of the shift boot or of the ebrake boot... If the price is right Im intrested....
WRXerist 06-13-2003 06:52 PM

Didn't take any photos yet. When I do I'll post some.
Adiliyo 06-14-2003 02:15 AM

out of curiosity, how hard is it to change your steering wheel? need any special tools?
and do post pics of the shift boot, a reasonably priced black with red stiching would be interesting to me :)
WRXerist 06-14-2003 03:30 AM

It isn't hard at all. Do a search here in this forum (I'm too lazy to...) and there is a post about swapping wheels. The actual page is posted at the scoobymod Website. The only tool you will need is a 17mm (I believe) socket and a breaker bar to get leverage. Just remember to disconnect your negative battery, wait 5 minutes, step on the gas pedal five times to release pressure before you start messing with the swap process.

I find some pics of the 04 STI wheel, notice it have opening on each side... I think it's possible to fit cruise control to the right opening
