has anyone ever done this???? or should i look into a roof vent??
| FWD WRX | 01-09-2006 10:08 PM |
do not get a sunroof installed.. it'd end up leaking.. get the roof vent !
| njskatchmo | 01-09-2006 10:09 PM |
I think you should avoid cutting holes in your roof. It will make it flex more through turns.
| boofer | 01-09-2006 10:11 PM |
Spec-C roof vent FTW

If you can pay for it they can build it.

I think that putting in a sunroof would be more money and hassle than its worth. Ive heard when people get aftermarket sunroofs they have a tendency to leak more, so if ou get one make sure its a professional job

I agree! but I'm the .1 percentile that can  Get the spec C roof vent because it looks better and shows the car's rally spirit like the wing and hood scoop do :D

Dunno... do you really think the chassis would be weakened perceptibly? There is only one minor arch support and then just the thin sheetmetal roof..... I'm no structural engineer but it doesn't seem like all that much material to lose.....
| kimoman | 01-10-2006 04:06 AM |
I would say go with the roof vent also. Sunroof will tend to leak especially if it is not done properly plus handling will also be affected that is why there is no option for one on the STI. Unless you track the car though I wouldn't be to concerned about the handling.

Agreed.
Plus.. I'd think that the sheer weight of a sunroof being that high centered on a car would affect handling more than the increased body roll.. my .02$

You wouldn't believe how much fresh air the roof vent lets in!!

I'd highly recommend it. I got mine from Subietuning in the Vendor's Group Buy section. :)

wow looks awsome! how was the install??
| Aarron_M | 01-10-2006 01:07 PM |
Wife didn't want me cutting into my roof, so a body shop did it for $170. 3 hours of labor. They said it was pretty easy and straight forward.

Since you're in NJ, you can ask AZP for help. It's not very difficult. Just make sure the gasket is installed the right way up, I've noticed a lot people get confused and put it on upside down.

why go cutting holes in a brand new car?
| shogun90 | 01-10-2006 02:42 PM |
Get a premium 04-05WRX and convert it to an STI. You will get heated seats and side mirrors and a power moonroof.
| Hank3 | 01-10-2006 02:51 PM |
Like some others have mentioned in this thread, the majority of the users who get STIs will not even notice the "supposedly" chassis flex of adding in a sunroof. This has been debated for years now - starting from the '02 WRX, which didn't come with a sunroof and now does. If you have the money and want a sunroof in your STI, find a reputable local shop to do it for you. Some people like them, some people don't - but don't be deterred by the talks of it hurting the performance of your car. Most likely you will not notice it one bit ;)

Do you want the sun, or fresh air??? Cause if you want fresh air, the roof vent will blow away(pun intended) a sunroof. :p

Glad to see I was just kidding.
Sounds like the roof vent is the way to go. It will also bring you closer to being like the Spec C Type RA.

The only thing you can do with a sunroof is spit out of it when somoene tails you... It is cool to have but rolling down the windows achieves the coolness just fine.
| intpostman23 | 01-10-2006 07:34 PM |
how does a roof vent usually cost??? and do people usually install it them selves or pay a shop??
| NaVaWRX | 01-10-2006 07:50 PM |
i always want one of that, it changes the look of car for sure... but i'm wondering if u can hear more air sound when u driving on freeway with it close ?

It's not that loud at all. Same as having the windows down. Subietuning in the Vendor's group buy section. ;)

So did anyone here do a sunroof mod with an STi? Why can't we buy the oem parts for the sunroof that comes on the WRX? I don't want that hood scoop. I want that sunshine baby... (even though I'm in seattle)

I would get a roof vent in a heart beat if they weren't so expensive. Someone make an inexpensive version and I'm al over it.

ASC in San Diego. There are others in OC too.
from what i hear they do a great job at intstalling sunroofs they have done wrx'x before too. Back when they didnt have them. Backed by lifetime warentee too. I too am looking at getting one for a 05 wagon hehe
I dont understand why the sti or wagon dont have it as an option, after all the evo has it.

I got a sunroof installed in my RS when I bought it brand new. Yea, I talked the dealer into it. :D It was installed professionally, and it has a warranty against leaks. Plus I live in New Mexico so it rains like 3 days a year here. Its much bigger and cleaner looking than the stock WRX sunroof too. I just love poping it open on sunny days. As for chassis flex? I havent noticed a thing, and the roof hasnt buckled yet.. so Im happy. If you are thinking about installing one, just make sure they give you a good warranty, and check out prior work they have done.

i know the local shop in my town has a lifetime warranty on leaks....and the owner told me that very very few comback with problems....
