Street Legal Track Car?

I have been thinking about retiring the WRX Wagon from track duty, and getting a dedicated track car. I think my biggest limitation will be that the car has to remain street legal because I have nothing to tow with, nor any room to store a trailer. What car would you guys recommend, and where would be some good sources (I know GRM, NASA, SCCA, etc) to find one?
Thanks,
Tim
Thanks,

I believe you'd have to compete in a Showroom Stock class, or if in IT, you'd still want to retain your cat(s) and a muffler for sound reasons. Of course, depends on state laws as to what is really going to get the attention you don't need while driving to an event. So far, so good for me. :)

How much money are you looking to spend? Certain dedicated track cars can weigh anywhere from 500 (open wheel) to 1500 lbs... (some Neons and VWs) and with a 500lb aluminum (or any kind of) single axle trailer that has a 2K load capacity could easilty handle that... and the Wagon is rated at towing 2K lbs.... thought about that?

E36M3
race tires can fit inside of it.
S2000
miata
z06 or other corvette
you can get tiny little trailers to tow your race tires and tools behind em.

I love that wagon-centric logic, KC. I'm still waiting for the Subie with towing capacity to trailor my GC8. :)

Take a look at 944 Porsches (any "flavor"). Very trackable car in street legal form, and while starting to get more expensive as they're recognized for what they are, you can still find lots of reasonable examples.
A place to start is the 944cup web site classifieds: www.944cup.com A side bonus of the Porsche is "cheap" track time available through PCA.

Budget?
Low; <$10K
Miata
CRX
Suzuki Swift GTi
Sentra SRi (I think that's the model)
80's vintage Golf GTi
Medium; 10K-$35K
How about a Formula Ford? Plenty around at various levels of price AND your wagon should be able to tow one on a trailer. Chances are that the seller will probably be offering a trailer. Plenty of actual races as well!
Decent trackable 4 banger BMW M3s.
Mustang 5.0 - get some tyres, brakes and suspension and you are there!
Factory 5
Various super high power:weight kit cars Fisher Fury etc - all street legal, but light enough to be towed if you wish.
Used S2K
High; >$35K
Caterham 7 Superlight R - scare yourself. You can find a used 7 for less
ZO6
You'll kill yourself in an "affordable" 911 - don't even think about it.
Low; <$10K

Budget would be <$15K. Preferably closer to $10K. I'd also like something that's fairly reliable, and not too expensive for replacement parts. I've seen a lot of good suggestions. Thanks guys!

I think your idea about weights is a bit off (Formula Vee's, the lightest open wheel cars I can think of, are closer to half a ton, and even the lightest aluminum trailers are more like 700 lbs.)... but even if you could squeek by at a ton for everything, hauling the max load with a WRX wagon would be a VERY ugly thing to have to do...

How about a 250cc superkart? Fastest has been clocked at 291 kmh(thats 180 mph ;) ), pull an INSANE amount of lateral g's, and accelerate 0-60 in about 3 seconds. You can get one for under 10k, and there really isnt anything that can match it for price/performance factor. Hell, even just a 125cc shifter kart is plenty fast enough. But, since your budget is 15k, i say 250cc superkart ;) There will be maintanence, but its going to be the same with any race car. Here is a site on superkarts.( it seems to be down right now, not sure if its going to stay down, but it has some good info.

Tim, are you getting a track car to race or just for track days? Do you want RWD or FWD? If it's just for track days, you can get a relatively cheap hard top, like a 240SX and build it up as you get time/money. If you go with a Miata, you'll have to invest in a cage right away, unless you buy one already built for the track. Me, I'd go with the Miata because parts are so readily available.
And don't think about towing with your wagon. Even with the lightest car and trailer, you'd be maxing out it's capacity. You might be able to pull it, but stopping and stability become problems.

Spec RX7 is the cheapest way to go racing, but a Miata handles better, is more reliable and parts are easier to find.
It's hard to break a Miata. I keep trying...

I've been thinking about the Miata, but I am selfish, and I don't want a car slower than what I already have. I know it's wishful thinking, but hey...I can dream right? And again, it has to be a street legal car. There's no way I'm towing with the WRX. :)
| ITWRX4ME | 07-22-2003 10:24 AM |
You could ping Gary Sheehan and find out what they're running in the Miata he posted about here. I'll bet it was faster than you're WRX.
Since you didn't say whether you plan on racing, you could always throw a turbo on it. It's a very light car. You should be able to easily achieve the power to weight ratio of your WRX. There are lot's of options.

I would vote Spec Miata.
They sell little trailer hitches for the Miata and you could tow a little trailer with your race rubber, jack, a decent size tool box and a 10'x10' canopy.
Very reliable cars that won't require much work on and off the track. Evenly matched so you can see how you stack up against other drivers with no "it's the car" excuses. RWD and low power will put an emphasis on carrying speed in the corners, finesse and car control.
This is a great series for tough, close competition and driver development.

Define "slower". You'll need to spend a very big amount of money to take a corner at a road course faster in a WRX than in a Miata.
A stock engined Miata (a Spec Miata) has lapped Road Atlanta under 1:46. That would put it right about where Irish Mike qualified his Speedvision Touring 2.5RS, about 5 seconds from the top cars. With an off the shelf suspension kit that has underdamped shocks and springs stiffer than optimum.
Heck, God knows I'm no F1 driver or Carroll Smith and I've run 1:49s there in a Spec Miata I built in my garage with just the bare minimum stuff.
I know this sounds like I'm dissing the Subaru, but believe me, I'm not. It's just that a Miata is hard to beat on a race track, especially in performance/money.

Yeah, to be honest, I'm just not a big fan of the Miata. I realize it's really ideal for what I want it for, but I just wish there was an alternative. Maybe I'll have to raise my budget a little. :)

I'll throw in another vote for a Nissan 240sx. Rear wheel drive, can be built up to have quite a bit of power, is reasonably lightweight, and i would imagine could be quite a good handling car.

Mav1c,
Have you driven a Miata on the track yet? If not, I HIGHLY recommend it. You won't find a car in near stock form that is as suited for the track as a Miata.
I'm considering running in Spec Miata as a way to keep my skills sharp at a low cost. Forget about the Miata image, it's an awesome race car.
