Stripes on a WRX part 1

Stripes on a WRX

I've been a Mustang fan for many years. I've never owned one, and doubt I ever will, but I've always liked the way they look.

I've always liked the over the hood and top duel racing stripes, and am curious how they would look on a WRX.

Or I could go with the ground effect stripes, or both!

Has anyone seen a WRX with either racing or ground effect stripes? If so, how did you like it?

I'm not fond of the neon bug eye headlights, and although I like Morrettes, they don't completely fix this for me. Pinstripes would point right to the headlights, so they are definately out. Racing and/or ground stripes would draw the attention away, which for me is a good thing.

I've seen lots of WRX's with gobs of boy racer decals, and that's not my style, but I've always liked stripes.

On a WR Blue car I could go with either white or black, I'm thinking white would look better.

Sorry, Steve, don't think you're going to get a lot of positive responses on your idea here. But hey, after you buy one, it's your car. Do whatever makes you happy!

(except Altezza-style taillights, cuz they suck! )
Hanzo 09-18-2001 09:56 AM

Don't do it please! If you got a mustang or Viper hell yeah go for it but if you get a WRX don't to this to it. It's like putting a subaru badge on a mustang, it just don't look right.

I don't really expect many to like it, but I'm still interested in hearing why not.

My biggest problem with racing stripe are that they jump out and slap you in the face with "Race Me!", and I'm not into racing...

Ground effect stripes are a much more likely possibility.

It's not just a mustang thing, other cars can be found with racing stripes too, several different models of Pontaic in particular. I'm not sure about stripes around the world, maybe it's an american thing. Is it that americans have no taste? Or maybe only we have the audacity to do such a thing? Probably both.:p

To me the GT strip has always been associated with the Mustang, Vette or Cobra. On any other American car it seems just a little too "wannabe".

On imports or European (I've actually seen them) they seem ludicrous.

But... in the end, it's your car and you should do what makes you enjoy your ride even more.

BTW... doesn't the stripe actually increase drag????? :p
trinidriver 09-18-2001 11:14 AM

borrowing tradition?

I have no idea what those stripes would look like on a WRX. Cobra/Vipers have those stripes bred into their history/tradition. I would personally stay away from them out of respect for those cars and their individuality. Just my opinion, it might look good, you never know.

80's, no way, 60's more like. Such as the 1964 Mustang Shelby GT-350:

SubEd 09-18-2001 11:23 AM

Yeah, it's 60's 70's and 80's. Cool early on, too played out now.

Ok, I see the light, I agree that by the 70's it was played out, and today it really doesn't work on anything but a Mustang.

Thanks to all for your input.

i like it too. smoke the chrome headlight piece and it will look even better.
SSJ Char 09-19-2001 02:23 AM

Can you make those speed stripes more of a light gold like on the stang? Kinda metalic like. I think that would be prime.
BADWRX 09-19-2001 03:19 AM

Hey man,

That is a real quality photochop!

I can tell you that it is not for me, but it does not look too bad. It kind of takes away from the "sleeper" element though.:o
wolf8314 09-19-2001 03:52 AM

Ya know??????

I was driving by a dealer in Waldorf MD and i saw a WRX new still with sticker and dealer tags that had racing stripes. The car was silverthorn and the stripes were like a dark gray......I thought it looked pretty good......whateva floats your boat ya know

I found a WRX review on caranddriver from Dec 95 that has a silver wagon with purple stripes:

I like the smaller stripes that run to the edges of the scoop, but the purple is a bit much for me.

I picked up my car this morning, yeah baby!

Now that I have a car to actually look at, I see that all the trim is black, both interior and exterior. So, white stripes will just not do, they have to be black.

Over the top racing stripes actually have a long history with british racing cars too, not just stangs n such. I think convertibles look GREAT with strips- a scoob, not so sure.

Was that a hint? Do I need to photochop black stripes for you? :)

Considering how much we try to convince people it doesn't look like a Dodge Neon, why would you do this to make it look even more like a Dodge Neon?

That's why you bought silver. :p
TRPsWRX 09-20-2001 12:42 AM

personally, i think racing stripes belong on domestics. just my .02s. that pic reminds me of a neon. i beleive the R/T model, the ones that come factory with racing stripes. i dont know, it just seems like puting racing stripes on a mercedes or lexus or something. just doesnt seem right.
Sergeant_V 09-20-2001 02:08 AM

Uggggh

I've seen a blue RS in Anchorage, AK with white racing stripes - I think he's on this board, you could try a search. It looks okay, but I think it screams "american car" - whatever floats your boat I guess. :)
Clegg 09-20-2001 02:39 PM

The white sticker at the top of the windshield on that car is really classy... so you got the stripes that scream "NEON" or Nutstang wanna be, and you got the white strip on the window screaming "CIVIC".

Sounds like a WRX with a serious Identity crisis.
ivbdn 09-20-2001 09:01 PM

It's not great, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. To each his/her own.
SteveGood 09-21-2001 08:11 AM

Last night I was out for a ride and I saw a bright red Miata with white stripes. Instead of down the center, they were on the driver side, Lemans style, but they were not the big stripe/little stripe design, just two big stripes. It was obviously a homemade job, the stripes were not even on straight. Truely hideous.

Iowannaski 09-21-2001 02:22 PM

I haven't had any luck finding information about this on the internet, but my understanding of racing stripes is that color schemes have a specific historical meaning. Color schemes used to identify the nationality of a vehicle in international competion. Hence the blue and white color scheme found on many american cars. Unfortunately, I don't know what the traditional japanese color scheme is - if there is one at all.
Some of this information comes from GT3, and I recall seeing a silver S2000 with red stripes somewhere (GT# or TFATF, I don't remember).
wrxtc 09-21-2001 11:09 PM

i think american was white with blue strip
german silver
italy red
france french blue
japan white
england green

p.s. those stripes scream neon rt

can some body photo shop some flames
50's hot rodder style, maybe jackup the back end.....
