Subiefest Time Attack + Autox

Preliminary info for the 2007 Subiefest Time Attack (which is, this time, open to all that meet the requirements) and Autocross competition is now available at the official site:
http://www.subiesport.com/subiefest/comp.html
Basically, two classes. Street and Pro. Pro allows R-Compounds and requires a cage. Street requires driver safety gear, but most Subies should qualify to run. Naturally, at least one HPDE is required for the driver prior to registration.

Also, there will be a BMW-club-hosted HPDE event on the day prior to Subiefest (Friday). I've already spoken to the club organizer and he's welcoming Subaru owners to join in. This will be a great opportunity to get some practice in before the big event.
Note that this HPDE, being the day prior to Subiefest, is not going to count for qualification to run the time attack. I would recommend taking the Cascade Sports Car Club Driver Training Class on MARCH 15 (school) and 16 (HPDE). If you have never taken a driving course, it will be the best $165 you ever spent.

Are there any other requirements for the fireproof race suit and fire extinguisher?
Oh and will you have a normally asperated class? :p

If you want classifications, I'll have to get those.
And no NA class this time. If we have several enter this time, we may consider breaking it down for SF3, but it just doesn't seem necessary.

There will never be "several" N/A cars out there, but it does seem necessary when you see the lap times :p

We'd hate to have a category that would be an automatic shoe-in for a trophy. Kinda takes the fun out of winning, imho.

I wouldn't mine doing this event but GOD. All the way in the NW!?
I think there should be a N/A class. This would focus more on handling then power. Also I don't want to have to show you turbo guys up. :p

Though, really, good driving and a car like the zzyzx one wouldn't need to be in a "special" category. And I guarantee, I'd be the slowest of the three  Too busy trying to do lame powerslides.

Portland is a handling track. It does have 2 straights, but they're not super long, and they're both preceded by fast, corners. Power to weight goes a long way there. :)
That said, I think with similar prep and similar driving, an NA impreza would almost surely need race tires to keep up with a turbo one, even with a weight advantage.

Well, that's why I said "similar" prep. Not identical, but similar.
My friend had a 99 civic hatch. Supercharged GSR motor. Tein Super Racing coilovers, rollbar, race seat, race tires, wilwood brakes with race pads, some weight reduction. It was pretty hardcore, but still not a full-on racecar, and still only at most probably 230hp. Probably about 22-2300lbs. He also never got the setup fully sorted out. It liked to snap sideways under braking. He ran a best time of 1:29.2 I believe. He was probably leaving 1-2 seconds on the table.
On the other hand, I have my STI, with 300whp, STI pinks, perrin rear sway, whiteline ALK, do-luck brace, strut tower bars, race pads, and whiteline rear lateral links. Probably about 3250 pounds, on RE070s. The best time I could muster after 4 track days in 2 weeks was 1:29.1, and I doubt I was leaving more than a second on the table. The front tires were just not gripping enough. When I put my Tein Flex back on (had them off for a rebuild on the right rear), with eyeball alignment, first session of the day, I dropped to 1:28.86, and then it got rainy. So with more setup work and some Kumho MXes, there was probably as much as another 2 seconds.
His car was faster on braking, corner entry, and mid corner, but my car exited the corners WAY faster, and my top speed on the straights was perhaps 10mph faster. A lightweight, NA impreza should still have a corner exit advantage over a civic, but may not have as much corner entry and mid corner speed. I'd also be about 400lbs heaver, and probably not have quite as much power (depending on prep level). So I'd guess a light NA impreza with similar or slightly higher level of handling mods would still need race tires to post a faster time than my STI.
Too bad I probably won't be able to do this event this year. I've got some Kumhos now (although they're on heavy rims), plus balljoint extenders, but I haven't had track time to sort out the setup completely, and I can't afford to track my STI this year (at least not the first half of the year). :(
I wonder if they'd let me run the miata.... hrm..... I bet I could beat some NA imprezas in that. :)

I think it's pretty rare that car events run without the chicane. Bikes tend to run without it, and one of the big race series went without it back in 05 when I went to Speed WC / ALMS. I believe it may have been ALMS that ran without it. I know Speed TC used it, because I was watching the lines the different drivers took, and I *think* Speed GT used it, because I seem to remember watching one of the corvettes drifting the exit a bit. :)

300hp from a 2.5? Or is he running an H6? Since Imprezas never came with an H6, I think I'd still classify that NOT a "NA Impreza" in the spirit of the phrase. :) Still, that'd be a fun showdown to watch.

We started a Time Attack series last year here in AZ. with Club Racing Az. This season they combined forces with NASA, and we're continuing the Time Attack series at each event(13 this season). Nasa seems very interested in what we've done, and we're hoping other Nasa regions eventually pick it up. A NASA National Time attack would be awesome!
Also, is the requirement to run this Subiefest TA really only one hpde? Seems a little scary but sounds like an awesome event!

I was planning to go to one of those this year, but I might do this subiefest one instead. If you look at the format... First, everyone is going to have more safety gear than your average HPDE. 2nd, warm-up is going to be run like an HPDE, which I assumes no passing into corners and such. And from then on, there will be only 1 car on track at a time (unless they're going to overlap warm-up and cool-down).

Correct, warm-up will be the only time there are multiple cars on the track. If we feel someone is not behaving during the warm-up we'll boot them out.

No, not at all. Time trials is run during de4, with non time trial'ers as well. Tt'ers run a transponder during the whole session, and have to clock their fastest times with others on track, and traffic.
Time Attack gives you(at least with our series) 1 warm up lap, 2 hot laps, 1 cool down and you have open track to run. Cars are spaced 15 seconds apart, with groups of 3.;)

Yes it is safer for less experienced drivers but it makes for a long and boring day  Putting 3-4 cars on the track with similar lap times would speed things up dramatically, be much more entertaining to watch, allow for more track time, and really wouldn't result in traffic.
I doubt this will happen as I'm sure the insurance is much less when only one car is on the track at a time.
Thanks,
Phil

We are considering staggered runs after we 'clean the field' with the first round of eliminations for that very reason.
Our timing setup was the big issue at the last event (only 1 car at a time). The new timing system fixes that problem with support for up to 6 cars.

That would be awesome and really much more entertaining for spectators. I'm surprised this track doesn't have the AMB transponder system for rent. This allows for an almost unlimited number of cars.

Which would suck.

I really meant that in a good way  Each car would have its own transponder so as one small group pulls of the track the next group can enter without delay. The timing method being suggested means that when each car exits the track they have to park, (take tire temps and pressure for me at least), unbuckle, remove helmet, remove gloves, etc, remove the timing equipment, and then install it on another car. Removing the timing equipment will not be my priority or the crews ;)
We will of course run whatever the organization wants but why reinvent the wheel?

So who is going to determine who are the fastest Subaru's to invite to this event? Will there be pre-qualifying events before this Time Attack or just qualifying for run groups that day?
I just wanna get all the fastest Subaru together in one place and watch them all run Like teh Superstreet Time attack did.

I believe the last event was for vendor and or vendor sponsored cars only (Invite basically). The next one maybe more open but from what I understand there will be a qualifier and if you are too slow you go home. At Super Street if you were not within 110% of the leader's time you went home after practice. A suprising number of entrants were sent packing. You blow and intercooler pipe....oh well
In any event I'm sure Subiefest 2 will be a great time and definitely worth attending even if you are only a spectator! :)
Thanks,
Phil
