Suzuki poised to take wing

Suzuki is expected to unveil its first World Rally Car within months. It will be based on an all-new road car, the Swift.
A Swift has long been part of the Suzuki range, but the new model will be bigger than either the Ignis - which is becoming the Super 1600 car to have - or the Liana. A four-wheel-drive version is rumoured to be part of the range.
Building a WR Car would mean contesting the full World Rally Championship, Suzukis most ambitious venture to date in four-wheel motorsport. Although speculation that a full-scale championship bid was being planned has been rife ever since the Ignis programme began in 2002, Suzuki has made no formal commitment to moving up from the Junior World Championship.

Presumably they'll be tuned and developed to a higher level for WRC competition. They made a great debut though, 1st and 2nd in class.

Cool, their first year is going to be slow, probably. Theyll need to work on their 4wheel drive tuning...and alot of testing. Just hope they wont storm-in like Citroen did in 02'. But, good more competition!

But considering that they had no experience in the WRC, it was pretty shocking to place 1-2 in their first event. Thats all....

Well, that wasn't in the WRC. That was in the Canadian CARS series, which is quite a bit more low-key. Though still quite competitive, from what I've heard. 'Dem Quebecois can drive plus bien dans le snow dere, eh?
| Thumper23 | 08-04-2004 05:23 PM |
very good news, especially with the way things have been going lately
| rexxer | 08-04-2004 05:31 PM |
The two cars that Suzuki has in the Canadian series appeared very quick... not as quick as the open class Subarus and Mitsubishi, but not slow either. Of course, the WRC cars will be 100% different than the brightly coloured Canuck versions.

The Suzuki Canada cars are stock except for safety equipment, I think they have less than 100hp-shifting gears just changes the noise.

That actually looks decent. I would be interested if it came with awd and a 2.0 turbo with about 200hp

I hope it's RWD and got the power to boot. No one currently makes a sporty car under $20K that is RWD.

The British Rally Championship was using these cars for the intro series of the BRC. I saw several of them in the flesh when I was over at a rally in March.

Ya the swift is a little down on power but its still cool to rally!!! The Suzuki of Canada Rally Team has absolutely nothing to do with WRC at all. The car is stock except for some nice Ohlins and all the safety equipment. I mean STOCK. Maybe if we do well they will bring one of them there super 1600 cars over for me to drive. That would be cool.
| joe z | 08-06-2004 01:18 PM |
in one of the super 1600's you could really have some fun...

Suzuki Motorsports have a little experiance with competetive AWD, just look to the Hill Climing events, with their very, very fast Grand Vitara

Hiya Bill. :) Nice to see you on here too. ;)
I wish I havd some stills of the cars in action from Rally Finland, but no stills of the Suzukis... just video... both on stage and Super Specials. (and I'd be NUTZ to upload it here! I don't have the bandwidth).
I'll see if I can get some screen shots later tho.
