Rally Deutschland Starts Tomorrow! Discuss Here!

It should be a good rally, especially with Panizzi out and the fact that it's been raining.

Also, all the drivers are bitching about too many spectators.

Peugeot's Richard Burns also commented on the number of fans after his shakedown saying: "There is an incredible lot of spectators here, one can hardly see into a corner."

Mitsubishi's Alister McRae, though, was a bit concerned about the number of spectators lining the route. He said: "The track is very narrow, slippery and therefore dangerous, and on top of that, there are the many, many spectators."

Subaru's Petter Solberg was also surprised by the number of spectators: "I am surprised that there are so many spectators there in spite of the rain."

oh, and.....

GOOOO SOLBERG!!

:D
bemani 08-22-2002 05:05 PM

Go Petter!
brainrally 08-22-2002 05:54 PM

Everyone ready for another Pug 1-2? Well, maybe Citroen might break it up a bit, but they ain't in contention for maker points.

No, I'm not being pessimistic. I'm positive Peugeot will win. :p

However, go Petter! :)

Well,

With Panizzi the Tarmac God out, the other manufacturers might have a chance.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sebastian Loeb take this one.
johnfelstead 08-22-2002 06:30 PM

i have a feeling this is going to suit Subaru, as the roads are very unlike other tarmac events. A lot of the roads are military ranges with lots of loose surfaces and almost gravel on the tarmac. They are also very bumpy so damper control, not racecar stiff sprung dynamics will be very important. I expect a LOT of punctures too, it could be a lotery. Subaru doing well will depend on if the car isnt too long for the roads and tight corners.

If things pan out, i'll be in the post rally party, i'll be in nurburg most of the weekend though, i think getting to the stages will be a nightmare. Based on reports so far i think we will see some cancelled stages due to species too.

wildcard has to be Armin Swartz, he grew up on these roads.
mordy_2v 08-22-2002 07:30 PM

Well, i hope they keep the cars on the road, cause one slip up could kill quite a few people from the sounds of it.

And go Tommi! He can do it, might feel like Monte
Carlo to him :p
Coati 08-22-2002 11:27 PM

I was just watching RallyXS and saw the new WRX ad.
Good points:
It's new.
Nice car.
Good road.

Bad points:
God help me if somebody drove me on a road like that and looked over at me repeatedly while they were driving at speed I would make them stop then proceed to thrash them about the head and neck.
I dont even f'ing blink on roads like that, let alone take my eyes off the road (my fiance knows to remind me to blink every once in a while). What kind of idiocy was that about?

:monkey: To Subaru's ad agency for making us all look like a bunch TFATF morons.
Coati 08-23-2002 03:18 AM

Tommi's off to a typical start.:(

Evidently his ebrake handle came off!
arew_WReX 08-23-2002 04:45 AM

Does anyone else find it ironic that the germans are hosting an event the french will walk away with

go hollywood
Idjiit 08-23-2002 09:47 AM

Anyone else having problems accessing the WRC.com servers?

Interesting to hear all the general support for a US rally...
Thug 08-23-2002 11:01 AM

I thought this was going to be a good event for Subaru because it's alot of loose gravel on tarmac. A surface that Tommi and Petter both rule on. But it's been typical Subaru quality shining through already, with 2 of the 3 cars breaking something on SS1.
cdvma 08-23-2002 11:04 AM

They canceled SS7 of leg 1 because of the spectator safety issues that WagonMonster talked about.
cdvma 08-23-2002 11:13 AM

Speed is also showing Leg 1 highlights tonight at 11pm EST
Idjiit 08-23-2002 12:12 PM

If the Subarus are going to show their stuff at any point, it sounds like tomorrow is the day. Much more down and dirty.
WagonMonster 08-23-2002 12:23 PM

Hmmm,

Loeb is winning...

Who predicted that?

oh yeah!

ME! that's who! ME!

I win! One to Nothing!
jonny_boy 08-23-2002 01:10 PM

WagonMonster, good call. I voted for Loeb to take it in the wrc.com poll and was pleasantly surprised to see him kicking butt when I checked this morning. Would be nice to see a non-Pug winner on a tarmac stage again.

The problem is obvious: They have Petter co-driving and Phil driving.
Look at the names on the window.
jblaine 08-23-2002 02:59 PM

Coati, I saw that commercial last night and was pretty stunned. Amazingly irresponsible of Subaru. Yeah, woo, I've got a great idea for a commercial. Let's put two 18 year-olds giggling like schoolgirls in the car doing 20+ over the speed limit for a typical twisty-ass road like that.

Someone needs to be fired.
WagonMonster 08-23-2002 05:08 PM

Well

Once again we have a Pug in podium Position (burns in 2nd) and the Subarus are languising outside the points (Solberg in 10th and Makinen in 15th!)

This season is depressing :(
johnfelstead 08-23-2002 05:16 PM

You are being very premature WagonMonster, it's only day one! Dont pat yourself on the back just yet. ;)

But Loeb is looking impressive.

p.s. I still win :D
johnfelstead 08-23-2002 05:25 PM

I am off to Germany in the morning, I'll let Seb know your are rooting for him. :D:lol:

Unless it's a right-hand drive Impreza, Solberg's name is on the top of the passenger side in that picture.

Weird. Looking at it now I can see you're right. But I can also see the car is LHD as all the WRC cars. Not sure what's up with that.
pio!pio! 08-24-2002 04:32 AM

Did you see Achim Mortyl's rim in tonight's footage? I never knew a rim could come apart like that! Reminded me of those spikey wheels you see in cartoons to attack other cars

Yea, I did but the most amazing thing about it is that he actually finished the stage! They changed the wheel after they crossed the finish line.
suber 08-24-2002 04:01 PM

Tommi is going very fast now! but I doubt he will catch the leaders.

lots of missed turns in this rally sheesh.
WagonMonster 08-25-2002 01:39 AM

Just like I predicted....

Loeb is still winning :)

Bummer about Petter though :(
bemani 08-25-2002 12:45 PM

What happened to Petter? :(

Funniest moment of the rally:
Colin: "Ask the Welsh Wizard over here."

And then looking at poor Grist's expression when he was trying to say the lost time really wasn't a big deal.:o
bemani 08-25-2002 10:51 PM

Alright! Let's see if Tommi can climb to 1st :D
STORER 08-25-2002 11:08 PM

I'll be happy if Loeb wins. He's young, a good driver and this is his last rally this year. I like how everyone was talking about taking it easy and Loeb was talking about pushing. This is probably my favorite tarmac rally this year.

WooHoo!!!

:D

Felstead owes me a Beer ;)

Loeb is also a good sport. He thanks Burn's for a good race.

That Focus crash was something else! The car was totaled:eek:

What a cool rally though. Does everybody think Gronholm's got it wrapped up then? I don't know Burns could sneak up and swipe it from him. It sounds like Colin has thrown in the towel.
Subie Gal 08-26-2002 09:46 AM

awesome, awesome, awesome rally!
finally roads these guys dont know.. havent been on and are challenged by!! and you could tell!!!

what a great event!

every single one of em made mistakes, struggled a bit...
just awesome to see these guys challenged by a rally
like they havent been for years! really great stuff...!

altho the ford accident terrified me....
really shocked that both men were ok that looked horrible...
another testament to the roll cage!!!

gotta catch the wrap up tonight... wow!
simply amazing rally! gonna have to go spectate that maybe as soon as next year.... ;)

Awsome rally!!
Anyway any one notice on the second day coverage they mentioned that colin mcrae 3 was due in the states any day now?
Idjiit 08-26-2002 12:47 PM

CMR3 won't be out until late November, at the earliest. The date keeps getting pushed back.

I agree with everyone about how awesome this Rally was... Definitely the most exciting Rally I've seen in a very long time. Glad it seemed like they were able to control the crowds a bit better on day two and three - but it still sounds like the event organizers have a bit of thinking to do.

Anyone have any good links to pics of Solberg's car after the accident?
WagonMonster 08-26-2002 12:49 PM

My only gripe is that Ralph "yee-ha" Shaheen was back behind the mic.

That guy says some seriously stupid stuff!

My favorite moment:

When Marko Martin drove by the awful Focus crash, you could clearly see the Co-Driver of the wrecked car holding up the "OK" sign.

So Ralph Says: "It must be unsettling to drive by and not know if your teammates are OK!"

And then, when Delecour drives by, Ralph says: "You see the Co-Driver holding up the 'OK' sign meaning they're unhurt!"

He also tried to expalin the new shifters on the Focus and ended up sounding like a moron.

Oh Well

LOEB! :D

I was incredibly impressed with how everyone was handling the new changes... Loeb has been doing fantastic and I couldn't believe that Achim Mortyl actually completed the rally!!

-Lunch Meat
Achim Mortyl crashed out later in day one.............He needs some better driving skills

stage 1 he screwed up the wheel on the first turn

A couple stages later went straight into a ditch and that ended his rally.
Idjiit 08-27-2002 09:27 AM

I never thought I'd say this, but... I'm glad Ralph Sheahan is back. Despain sounds drugged, doesn't sounds like he's excited about the event at all. And although they both get those "funny names" incorrect, Ralph at least seems to have some common sense about pronounciation.
