Tail lights - anti-Alteezza
1 Attachment(s)
Wondered what everyone thought of this little mod I did. I hated having solid red on silver .. so I concocted this groovy little setup and made a cleaner look.

ok..
so those images don't do justice really..
The digital cam doesn't like straight lines I guess .. but the first image gives an hint of it's look..
It's 1/8" + 1/16" pinstriping.. matched to the factory color spec .. laid each strip one after another by hand. when the lights are off, it gives the appearance of almost a solid silver back end. I'll put up better pics with the lights OFF tomorrow so you can get the full effect.
oh.. did I mention Altezza's are u g l y? Wish someone else would make a cooler tail light that wasn't a knockoff of every other honda/acura/whatever on the road. :(

I've had many positive comments from people about it.. but the picture jacked it up .. the digital cam isn't the best..

=)
no j/p, it looks real clean from a few steps back, especially with your "V7" spoiler. When i saw your first close-up pic i was like "uGh...wat the hell???", but seeing how it melds with the car as a whole I really like it.

How many holes did you drill for your spoiler? Mine is arriving tomorrow and I don't know whether to drill 8 or 12 holes. Please let me know. I also wanted to know if the wing flexes while you drive it over bumps. Please take a pic while you step on the brake so I can see what the 3rd brake light looks like.
I will have mine tomorrow but I want to know now.
Thanks dude,
The lights look good.

I put that dang thing on myself.. holy fright. I think it was 12 holes.. or more. Not 8 for sure .. i just remember the painful feeling of each time the bit touched the trunk. My car is barely 2 weeks old. What a way to break it in! It's a version 7 frow what I was told. It grows on me every time I see it. There is no fear like the fear of jacking up the alignment tho. I was pretty careless.. but I am lucky and .. well lucky! It's straight .. no gaps, no misalignment.
I'm sure not everyone digs it. I bet it would look tiiiiiiiight on a black car.. similar to the look that VW did on the golf's. I'm reconsidering using all 1/8" instead of the mix of the two sizes. I just eyeballed the each strip .. one after the other. I took out the lights and sat them on the floor and just went to it. They look perfectly aligned, and symmetrical from one side to the other too.
More pics in the morning.
Oh, and the wing is secure as hell. It's hot as freak in Tulsa right now - almost 100 .. and I'm pretty sure this thing is blown fiberglass or similar (the smell is reminiscent) and it doesn't sag or even flex when I pull on it. I'll try to push the pedal quick and run back to take a pic for ya STR8OUT .. hehe.. actually.. i tested it by shoving a frisbee inbetween the clutch and gas pedal .. forcing the brake pedal down so I could figure out the polarity of the wires. :)
Thanks for the good and bad comments.. :) Love it .. hate it. Just don't ignore it.

You have brought back some memories. In the 80's people used to put pinstripe tape on thier lights just like you did. It was done on alot of all white vw cabriolets with white rims, white body kit and white stripes on the taillights.
They even called it the "euro look" or 80's Altezza if you will.

hummmm... looks like you used threaded packing tape. about 10years ago mustang gt guys liked to do that.

I agree altezzas are ugly, I can't convince my friend NOT to get them for his Infiniti G20T. Your lights are creative, I give you props for that, who cares if Mustangs and VW's used to do it. As for new tail lights, Morrette has a set they are coming out with, Z-1 Performance is hosting a poll for them in this forum (my personal opinion of them is no good- to each his own)

Thanks iflybyu,
I am just as scared to drill the holes. 12 holes in the trunk is a pretty lot. I am glad to hear it is a steady spoiler. Does it afect the way the trunk opens? Is it very heavy? Also, where did you buy it from. I got mine off of a guy in Canada, Shipping charges were like $70.
Thanks for the feedback. That spoiler looks real good M'kay.

The shipping weight was 12 pounds .. it opens the trunk a lot heavier now, but it also closes much easier too! Aero Parts in Calgary - off ebay? That would be where I got mine. It's scary to do, but it's worth your time to do it yourself .. at least you can be sure no one else jacks it up. :)
Dang - I'm feelin no love on the look.. Owell, you guys must just be jealous of the pink coilovers and seat covers I have too.

Hey iflybyu,
Since you are so helpful and I have just found out that my spoiler isn't arriving until Monday, would you be so kind as to take more pics for me. If you could, get one of the led brake light lit up, one of the underside of the trunk (showing the bolts), and a couple of different angle's of the whole car showing how well the spoiler looks. Please also take pics of your wiring for the brake light. I have heard there is a tucked-away wire somewhere in the trunk for the stock spoiler brakelight.
I don't have a stock one, I know it doesn't cover stock holes so I'm OK.
Also, make sure that you disconnect (if you havn't already) the stock 3rd brakelight. I can't stand it when people have two 3rd brake lights.
This would be a great favor if you could answer all my questions.
Thanks again dude.

that's a lot of holes.
Eeek!
Each hole that was made isn't exaclty a mirror of the other side .. you may note that a few of them don't look to be in the exact same place as the corresponding one on the other side - yet the wing is perfectly aligned. You'll see when you get the wing what the little jigs look like that will help you determine the correct hole placement. Two holes I actually drilled and I never put a screw through .. those are indicated by the white x. I just didn't want to drill anymore and realized that it was water tight as it was .. and dang tight! I imagine you really don't need to put as many holes in your trunk as there are holes to put screws into. It took a good hour and a half to do right .. but iz all good.
I was going to include a shot of the rear decklid looking up at the wiring.. but I think it's pretty self explanatory .. just disconnect the connector from the third brake light assembly, and then tap into the connector for your new led light. Also .. if you note .. you can't see the wire anywhere for the brake light. I had just incidentally drilled a hole right next to the hollow trunk supports (on the left side) then popped off the little black end piece, ran the wire down through it all the way into the trunk. And there you have a clean look. Be sure to use silicone to seal all the holes you drill, and I suggest using washers (not included). Everything else is pretty easy to do .. just drink a beer (just one .. don't get drunk) and go to it. :)
