Still waiting on paint. Hey F4turbo.. a fan of 202 huh? How close is my work to s202 trim? That's what I'm going for here.
| sonicsuby | 08-20-2005 04:52 PM |
I don't see the "installed" pics...
| Perdue | 08-20-2005 05:04 PM |
I build scale models and use Tamiya Paint for those, but never thought about using it on my car. At $5+ at most hobby shops for a 100ml can (about 3oz), that ****'s expensive.
| 03twrx | 08-20-2005 05:08 PM |
Getting ready to put in the radio bezel, then I'll host a pic.

Very sharp. When you get off work you should post some more pictures from better angles.

That looks great thats just what i need because the silver trim on my wrx is beat

wut kind of prep work did u do? i think u've made my decision for painting my interior.
| offset | 08-20-2005 09:21 PM |
I think it actually looks a little too 'flat' too me. I think I would put on a very light gloss or something.

Wow I like that a lot, I might be doing this soon...
| 03twrx | 08-21-2005 04:06 AM |
Very light sanding then a wash with dish soap. Let it dry up real good then spray away. As far as it being to flat.. well, you'd just have to see it in person. The only prob with it is if you touch it with dirty fingers, you can see the oils left behind. When I do it agian, I'll paint it mat then finish with some flat clear so it's not to shiny.

good job, but i think regular spray paint would work just as well as model paint and be more cost effective to boot. They have various hues of black spray paint too....gloss, semi-gloss, flat, matte, etc.
| ittybitty_STI | 08-22-2005 12:15 AM |
Yup i work at a harware store and we have all types and cheap with my discount.

This looks really darn good. Great job!
| Xymox | 08-22-2005 12:51 AM |
BTW, is that the keylight mod? If so, do you have a write-up/DIY? Been looking to do that for quite some time.
| 03twrx | 08-22-2005 02:19 AM |
Nope no key lite mod. But The'll all be red soon.

No. That light has been there since I bought the car. It's a factory light.
| Xymox | 08-22-2005 10:58 AM |
i guess 03's got the light.......02's did not. Bugger.
| Rallycarperson | 08-22-2005 10:58 AM |
'03 WRXs had the keylight standard. That was one of the few differences from the '02.
BTW, black looks sweet.

Wow that looks pretty good. I may have to try this when I get my car back.
I think I'll paint it white to match the exterior  , jk

What's irony?
Having a GC/GF/GM, and everyone complains about a dull interior....
Then the new car comes out, and all people want to do is paint everything black....
Yes, it looks good!

I always liked the dull trim. Trust me, it had nothing to do with the latest "fads"
| neuspeed | 08-22-2005 02:11 PM |
Tamiya model paint will chip after time.. I've had a lot better luck with pactra. The tamiya gun metal color is sweet though.
| mhaythor | 08-22-2005 02:12 PM |
Don't care for it, but for one major reason - while I think the individual pieces look good, now the newly painted bits don't match the rest of the interior. Would you paint the inside of the door, the door handles, the steering column, etc?
It looks [to me] like you've got two different blacks. So how does one transition the colors nicely?

What newly painted bits. None of my other trim in silver. It's all black now baby.
| WRX8XB | 08-22-2005 03:27 PM |
i believe he is talking about your steering column cover, shifter surround and the like.
now with two different blacks it looks a little off.
Very nice job on doing the S203/Spec Type RA look, but they use a rubbery type paint.
The black looks very uneven, but that could very well be the pic.

Perhaps I'm color blind, but this color match looks almost perfect. And I think the uneveness you see is actually finger print smudges.
| 03twrx | 08-22-2005 04:19 PM |
Yes there are a few smuges
| 02_Forester | 08-22-2005 05:57 PM |
I was going to do a similar treatment to my Baja-T - to match the S401 Legacy but try to match the "soft touch" by using some of the black rubber spray for tools and then if needed, spray a flat/matte clear coat or a light coat of matte black. The black bumper spray paint may help prevent chipping as it has flex in the paint. There is also dash spray paint that has flex agents in it.

There is a junk yard with several Legacies so I can experiment and keep the stock silver Baja interior. The hardest part will be the other pieces on the door and driver's side vent that have small white line graphics.

In that second picture, called dscf00051ak, you show the passenger side air vent. Is that whole dash repainted? If not, then I am wrong and maybe it's the lighting, cuz for some reason that dashboard doesn't appear to match the vinyl on the passenger side door. Again, it may very well be the lighting. If it's just the trim ring around the vent, then I surely am wrong and it does seem to match well.
| 03twrx | 08-23-2005 02:05 AM |
The dash and door panel are both factory. But now I'm interested in this rubber paint.
| 02_Forester | 08-23-2005 11:37 AM |
swing by Home Depot or Lowes, they have a variety of colors for the rubber paint. I think there may be RustOleum version that is for plastic chairs but there is definately a spray rubberized paint, similiar to the cans of the paint you dip your tool handles in, same stuff, just a spray.
I got a can of red at home to spray some rachets so if someone borrows my tools, I'll know its mine. :)

Sweet, I'll run by home depot and get some paint "so I don't forget" so that when my paint wears to thin or whatever I'll have it.
