The Intimidator is Dead.................
I know the people on this board are not big NASCAR fans, but we must pay our homage to one of the greats of the sport who was killed today at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt Sr was killed today when his car slammed head first into the wall on the last lap. His crash looked like the kind that a HANS device might have saved his life. I'm not sure what his injuries were, I'm just guessing a HANS might have saved him. I'm really bummed right now, I still can't believe this. What a horrible start to the motorsports season.

i am not a nascar fan, but i will watch and sorta autoracing on TV. This is a loss to the automotive and nascar world. To crash on the final turn, of the final lap of a 500mile race just TOTALY SUCKS

NO WAY!!! I saw the race and that crash. I had a bad feeling when it took them so long to get him out of the car. Man that really hits hard. I dont know what else to say.

Took me 7yrs to get over the death of Ayrton Senna da Silva and now this. Again I was not a huge NASCAR fan but Earnhardt was one of my favorite racers of all time in any type of racing.

Wow. I'm not a big NASCAR fan, but I do know who the Intimidator is. This is going to be a huge loss for NASCAR. His son was just on "Turn Ben Stien On" a few nights ago, and he was talkng about the influence his father had on him. Earnhardt will be remembered by nascar fans for not only his personality (i met him a few times, once at a race, once at a meet and greet i went to b/c my uncle is head of road america and i got to tag along, and once at the world of wheel 2 years ago.) he was a very very funny man, had everything in perspective and was just fun to be around sadly, his life was cut short, this after Rodney Orr was killed in practice for Daytona after Neil Bonnett was killed...also a friend of Mr. Earnhardt
Earnhardt was the leader among active Winston Cup drivers with 76 career victories who also has the most victories at Daytona International Speedway, that number of which was 34. He was a very skilled and talented driver, and i am at a loss for words :*(
You know how you meet someone a few times and you feel like youve known them a long time..well that is how i felt about dale. I met his son at the meet and greet, and those two together were a dangerous combination

I've never been a fan of NASCAR, but as a brave man and great driver, he always had my respect. This is a tragic day for motorsports.. We'll miss you, Dale..

I am still in shock. This is a great loss to the world racing comunity. Period! words cannot explain. It hurts right now. Hopefully something will come from this tragedy. My thoughts are to his family, they are the big losers here. sad.....

I have already posted my comments regarding this incredible tragedy. Dale was a giant in the world of motorsports.
I only wish that this will help fuel Dale's great cause, the removal of restrictor plates in NASCAR. While the restrictor plate and the new aero package did not have anything to do with Dale's death it is, as Dale pointed out a number of times, causing a very dangerous situation. For those of you who did not watch the race, there was a pack of almost 30 cars all on the lead lap driving 2-3 across for almost 3/4 of the race. All it took to wipe out almost 20 of those cars was one car to get loose. It is just luck that nobody was killed in that mess.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Earnhardt family in this incredibly painful time.

I was shocked to hear that Mr. Earnhardt died from what appeared to be almost a routine accident, if there is such a thing. And the earlier crash that took out 18 cars they were all fine, especially the driver that flipped upside down at tremendous speed. How deceiving things can be. Nothing in life is gauranteed. Daytona has been hailed as Dale's track. Every year I'd hear how he hoped to win the inaugaral 500. May he now rest in peace, it was a wild ride, and I hope that his son may continue the family's tradition of racing, however, if he chooses not to, there is a definite understanding as to his decision.

I cannot believe it.
I have been a racing fan for years, always expecting the Black 3 to be in the lineup.
The risks in racing are high, but you never really expect anything more than an hour in the care center. When someone dies it hits hard.
When its someone you've always thought of as invincible, there are no words.

Yeah, I kinda got a sick feeling in my gut when they didn't really show them working to get him out of the car. That's not usually a good sign. Also, when they asked Schrader what condition he was in, and he replied something like "I'm not a doctor, so I don't know about these things". That just seemed like an odd thing to say.
One thought that makes me kinda half-grin, is that I don't think Dale would've wanted it any other way. (Well, except that he would've won the damn race as well!).

Our prayers are with the Earnhardt family and the nascar family as well.Its hard losing someone so great as Dale was.....just can't believe it.We have lost a man whom many people admired and influenced so many of us in so many ways. You will be missed greatly Dale.Nascar will never be the same again.

I missed the race, and just happened to flick on the TV set, when I heard about it. I was horrified, because the crash didn't really look all that bad, as NASCAR crashes go.

He was going to win Daytona!!! Its too crazy to have identical cars in most ways and put them on a highway with no one else but themselves. But thats always been the way they raced. Simple but effective. Its a great form of endurance racing that you can finish on a Sunday afternoon. Dale Earnhardt was the best example at keeping a 3000 pound car in control at 180 miles an hour for lap after lap after lap. He was 18th and his son was first in Talladega last year. There was a crash, just like the first crash with the Home Depot car today, but Earnhardt pushed through all 17 cars that were 2 and sometimes 3 cars wide to take the win. It was the most aggressive form of driving I have ever seen without breaking the any rules in my book. I regret not knowing and following such a legend earlier. He was the first NASCAR racer that I know about to race in the GRAND AMERICAN Rolex Daytona. It just plain sucks to ****ing loose him, shiiiitttt!!! I am not a fan of the "drive fast-turn left" but was watching the last 30 min of the race. The accident looked so innocent. I assumed that he would be ok. I am bummed at the loss to the motor sports world.

Tis a sad day in all motorsports...I watched the crash and I didn't think it was that bad...But they took him away an an ambulance, and the announcers said that he was being taken to the hospital but they didn't seem concerned. It kinda shook me up when I heard about it on the news that night. I was going to come onto the i-club to post it, but I was way too bummed.

I've been a NASCAR fan for many years. My father was a really big fan of Dale, and I wondering how hard this has hit him. (I saw him last night, but he hadn't heard the news at that time). I just heard this morning that Dale was gone.
This is very sad and an extremely huge blow to not only NASCAR, but Motorsports as a whole. A great many people who didnt know NASCAR, knew who Dale Earnhardt was. A reputation like his will be greatly missed.

It is safe to say that this weekend's Daytona 500 tragedy affected a spectrum of people from die-hard fans to occasional spectators. When events such as this one occur, we are always reminded of our other favorites, like Ayrton Senna, whose fate was much the same as Earnhardt's.
As the week and the motorsport season begins, we mourn one of NASCAR racing's greatest, and one of all of racing's unforgettable, a man who posessed not only skill but also personality. I became a NASCAR viewer when I immigrated to this wonderful country in 1983, simply because it was one of the "selected" forms of Racing that were shown on regular TV. After watching my first race, I was a Dale Earnhardt fan for life. This guy was a RACER, in EVERY aspect, down to the last cell in his body! I never really followed NASCAR all that close, but I ALWAYS checked to see how my man Earnhardt did. EVERY form of racing has it's KINGS, As Senna was to F1, Earnhardt was the KING of NASCAR.
As the Death of Ayrton Senna had a profound affect on Safety in F1, I am SURE that the loss of the great Dale Earnhardt WILL make it safer for those who follow in his footsteps. The one thing that immediately comes to mind is this new HEIM device. It is specifically designed to help in high G-force crashes. It is a carbon fibre device that straps to your shoulders and the helmet attaches to it. It is too early to tell whether this would have helped ANY if Dale were wearing it, but I think it needs to be looked into SERIOUSLY by NASCAR.
I FEEL for the entire Earnhardt "family".
My Heart ACHES for his Wife and Kids.

As a fan of all Motorsports and a die-hard NASCAR fan, I am in a state of disbelief today. Yesterday, as I competed in a race of my own, my thoughts were on the outcome of the Daytona 500. As I made the hour and a half drive home last night, my wife called and told me of the accident, and the announcement of the impending press conference. I knew then that one of the greatest influences for my getting into motorsports had been killed. It made the drive home seem endless.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Earnhardt family and friends.
I hope now NASCAR will realize that life and safety is more valuble than money and ratings.
I don't know if I will ever watch another NASCAR race, right now, just the thought hurts too much.
