Logical extension of the twin-keel design? Or just ugly?
GuidoThePenguin 01-05-2004 08:50 AM

I know Ferrari are already sweating in their pants on just the fact Williams is on Michelin and Ferrari is on Bridgestone.....
Dr. WOT 01-05-2004 09:34 AM

I'm torn between thinking that it's innovation and innovation is good, and thinking it's the ugliest damn thing I've ever seen. I always think of that old aeronautics saying, "If it looks right, it will fly right." Perhaps this car will be the exception that proves the rule.

Interesting news reports along with the launch stating that JPM will be locked out of all development of the 2005 car. Considering the rate at which development occurs in F1, it is hard to imagine that not effecting his performance as this season progresses.
J!M 01-05-2004 09:45 AM

That's interesting news about Montoya. I have to agree that is going to hurt him this year.

I Like It!:D

I think Williams has more momentum as a team than McLaren does, it may well be that Monty's going to wish he hadn't moved.

Nice comparision Tim Stevens. I think it is...um...new. It looks very functional. I like that it is such a short wheelbase.
elgorey 01-05-2004 12:32 PM

looks like they are trying to get a good amount of downforce out of the nose. Almost starting to look like a Prototype Lemans car
wes 01-05-2004 12:32 PM

MORE PICS!
Hers another gallery with some good photos

gtguy 01-05-2004 12:35 PM

Man, that car is ugly. It might be fast (which has yet to be proven), but it IS definitely ugly.

Locking JPM out of development makes sense. Can't have him taking stuff over to the black and silver, now, can we?

Makes me wonder if they'll have different nose sections for different tracks...

Seems like they took a very different take on the back of the car compared to McLaren. While the new MP's bodywork tucks right in against the engine in the back, it seems like the rear-end of the Williams has grown and become much more tall.

It'll be cool to have a couple of very distinctly different looking cars out there.
totoherbs 01-05-2004 12:45 PM

It will sure stick out....
hillman 01-05-2004 02:52 PM

They should name it 'Bucky'.
NegativeC 01-05-2004 06:51 PM

HOLY CRAP! Soooo ugly!!

But it looks like the nose is shorter (less drag/weight) and the front wing deck is larger (more down force).

The biggest difference though is the mounting distance, the front fangs are like a big lever which is pretty cool.
SubaruWRC 01-05-2004 07:10 PM

good to see budwiser getting in to other motorsports

I think it will be cool to see again different teams' cars will looks differently and not just by their color.

Williams would have taken Tampax if they gave them the money.

Even at the F1 level teams dont have the luxury of picking and choosing their own sponsors.
TimStevens 01-06-2004 01:46 PM

Sure they do. F1 guys are eager to get any kind of American branding on their cars. They really want to succeed here in the US, because there's potentially more money in the US than anywhere else they race!
TheMirror 01-06-2004 01:51 PM

Wow. One glance at that nose configuration and its "why didn't they think of that before?" Shades of the groundbreaking Tyrrell 019. On the face of it, its very easy to see why they split the nose like that. They've effectively removed the high pressure area at the point of the nose and it now allows air to flow straight to the underbody. They've effectively increased functional wing area by raising the nose like that. Now airflow goes over the entire wing. Outstanding.

Its similar to the mid 90's tack that Bennetton took (and then everyone followed) with the straight nose and split wing mount points. Here it looks like they'll get more downforce, and especially a smoother airflow to and around the underbody which is incredibly critical.
This design theoretically looks like it will perform quite well in dirty air as well. Nice!

You can really see how short the nose is in this pic:

The tusks extend to where the tip of the nose "should" be, which gives an idea of how short the body of the car is. The wing is no longer beneath the nose, but ahead of it.
TheMirror 01-06-2004 02:09 PM

Absolutely right Tim, its way out front there in nice clean air. Geez, that design has downforce written all over it!
TimStevens 01-06-2004 02:15 PM

I'm a McLaren fan, but have always had a soft spot for Williams, and hope they can do well with this new design. Very interesting to see two semi-radical designs. Makes me wonder if Ferrari has something interesting to unveil, or whether they'll be left looking rather... reactionary this year :)
TheMirror 01-06-2004 02:40 PM

The off season is always fun. It provides satisfaction for the engineering nuts (like me)!
Achilles38WRX 01-06-2004 02:58 PM

wow! definitly 'unique'! looks like the entire nose is wider too. makes you wonder what they'll think of next?
TimStevens 01-06-2004 03:00 PM

I think a Chili Dog dispenser was in the works as a mid-year enhancement to the car, but was scrapped when Montoya's move to McLaren was annouced. :)
artkevin 01-06-2004 06:02 PM

HA!
Monter garage! Good stuff. By the way, it looks like that car can stick to the ceiling.
WE R ND 01-06-2004 11:14 PM

Looks pretty much the exact opposite of the McLaren with it's skinny nose.

oh well, i dident know, i dont watch F1 anymore because i dont have speed channel.

excuse my lack of knowledge.:o

Jiffy:huh:
Kitsune 01-07-2004 12:21 AM

Personally, I think this new design is stunning. :)
TheMirror 01-07-2004 01:13 AM

I agree. I'm really struck by the functional look of it. One wonders if they spent a lot of time studying pitch sensitivity on the thing in relation to moderately to highly turbulent airflow. I can't help but look at it and think it should be terrific in dirty air.....i.e. traffic. If so, World Championship.

Only if it's equally good out in clean air. Won't win many races if you're only fast when you're following someone ;)

I've said it before (on other boards) and I'll say it again (here)...

Ugly but effective. The times from Jerez look promising. Effective=pretty ? (maybe)
