Thinking of what I could use for a beater/rally car part 1

Thinking of what I could use for a beater/rally car

Yeah, I'm getting rid of the RS soon, as I'm looking to upgrade the roof over my head (well, downgrade, but get away from the parents).

I know I'll need a beater for the time being, so I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone here. What would be a good beater turned Rally Car?

I've never rallied (aside from TSD and RallyX), and would like to get into ClubRally or something.

Now, I've been thinking of a 1st or 2nd Gen RX-7. Those being RWD, though, would they be much tougher for a rally n00b than, say, a 93 Impreza FWD (or even AWD)? What would be a good car in this category?

Oh, and I'm looking to keep the buying price of the car under $5,000. Thanks.
Thug 07-31-2002 03:41 PM

Same thing Im thinking of getting: '91-'93 Sentra SE-R.
I dont think there's a more competitive car in Club Rally Production class. It's one of very few FWD cars that came with a LSD, it has a bulletproof, rev happy, cheap, engine and it weighs in around 2400 lbs.
JGard 07-31-2002 04:11 PM

heh, just did a search at Autotrader.com ...nothing within 75 miles. :)

what about a 93 Integra? I have a friend with one that has high miles...but I'm sure I could rebuild the engine and stuff on that... would those be any good to rally?
Mike Anson 07-31-2002 04:40 PM

Audi 4000 Quattro. Locking diffs are fun.

Tough car that's a decent daily driver and a helluva good rallyx car. And they make nice rally cars - just ask Jon Kemp.
freq 07-31-2002 04:40 PM

I'm lookin for a 323 gtx right now for the same purpose, but after talking to some people and being on the 323 list for a while, I am still considering other cars.

the 323's seem a bit tempermental and hard to get parts for, but the tradeoff is that its awd and turbocharged!

I'm thinking about getting started with something front wheel drive and the SE-R is on my list :)

Thug 07-31-2002 04:41 PM

Integra wouldnt be a bad choice I suppose. But the motors are a bit smaller and I dont believe there are as many suspension choices. Both cars would make good cars to move into Gr. 2 or Gr. 5 further down the road. Especially since you can get SR20DE-T engines dirt cheap. And I mean dirt cheap.

There was an SE-R in the Want Ad last week.

Yup. We just dumped our 323 in favor of a VW Rabbit because the Mazda ate a tranny everytime we were on tarmac. It also would run like ass for about 10 minutes everytime we went thru a water crossing.
elgorey 07-31-2002 04:48 PM

the audi and 323 are both pretty unreliable, and also rare.

I would suggest a 1g DSM AWD, although those are only slightly more reliable. (at least parts are dirt cheap)
AWD turbocharged fun. www.dsmtrader.com

The SE-R is a great recommendation also.

1st gen RX-7s are dirt slow and not too reliable, but there are plenty of parts.

I would say an S13 240sx would be a great choice. 91 is the best year due to a bigger cam, but 92,93 are good too.
Thug 07-31-2002 04:59 PM

yeah. The DSMs are great too, but I think as a beginner Id start with a FWD and then later move into an AWD when I had more money and experience. The AWD trannies are prone to breaking but the good thing is that all of the engine parts and most of the suspension bits from your FWD would be useable in your AWD.

Never thought about the 240SX but that is a good recommendation as well.
travmn 07-31-2002 05:24 PM

if you want dirt cheap (unless you're going to try & be ultra competitive pro rally), vw golf or gti...

firebreathing 2wd or 4wd... xr4ti (i'd do an escort cosworth conversion if I had the money or import an old mkii escort... the xrattie though isn't too bad, just ugly)

rx7 would work... i wouldn't get a 1st gen...

it's a lot better if you can get a prepped car though if you are going to do club rally... unless you got the $$$ and time.

i'd also stay away from 4wd for starting out... go for a g2 or g5 car (there lots of fun anyways)...

or you could be psycho like me and still looking for an old justy to rally with :)

i wonder what kinda power that car will make with forced induction  it probably would be a great ice racing car though... everything would need to be custom fab though
Xio 07-31-2002 05:29 PM

I'm surprised nobody has said a '91-'94 Legacy Sport. Might be at the high end of your price range though.
Nargaredama 07-31-2002 05:54 PM

Volvo

Any RWD drive Volvo would be a good choice. They are rock solid thanks to being way over engineered. Are cheap and easy to work on. Just find one with a manaul trans and you're set. They also come in turbo form which can be fun.

JGard 07-31-2002 06:40 PM

whoa, I heard Justy! I think that answers my question right there! :) Seriously, those things are wicked cool, and very tossable.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, this has helped... I'm pretty close-minded when it comes to thinking of a new kind of car to buy. But I can say I definitely won't go VW. :)

I would tend to disagree about the 4kq being unreliable. The motor and tranny are bulletproof, the electrics are another story, though. And they're not really that rare, just old. Parts can be found in junkyards and they come up for sale quite often. I haven't had any major problems with my 4kq since I got it over a year ago. So, maybe I'm a little biased.

Dont bother trying to rally a Justy. The floor will rust out at the first water crossing.

there's 2 arguments about the justy... 1 for, 1 against...

basically in the U.S., the car will end up being a money pit (basically since there isn't a class the car would be competitive in) so it's car with no future... however, it seems like a good car to work on driving skills... at least a lot better than a 300+hp fire breathing 4wd monster... but there are a lot of other cars that are just as good to work on your skills, and can be competitive as well

if you do a search here or on specialstage you should be able to find those justy threads...
travmn 07-31-2002 08:07 PM

oh, i also forgot to mention a lot of custom fabrication... it's not like you can call your local shop and order a set of DMS's that'll go straight on the car...
HoRo1 07-31-2002 08:11 PM

Car choice

There's an AWD legacy on ebay for under $750 if memory serves, but it might be in CA. That's good though - no rust. It is in pretty good condition. That has potential.
Rattler 07-31-2002 11:10 PM

I am going to start looking for a Winter/rally beater soon too. i can get, gasp, an S10 Blazer dirt cheap from a guy at work. $500. I would rather talk my buddy in to taking me to the auction and picking something else up. The ideas will help. He got a 1995 Impreza wagon w/5 spd light roll last year for $1200. I would love to find another one like that.

:(Thats a shame. Because as far as all the other suggestions go, I guarantee you won't find a more competetive car in the cheap price range. A2 VWs are still winning G2 in ProRally today, and there are more cheap parts and good cheap rally and replacement parts out there for the A2 VW than all the other cars mentioned combined. On top of that you can't go to a rally today in America without tripping over somebody who knows alot about VWs and or has connections for parts or has parts themself.

Why wouldn't you go with a VW?

Justy. Easy to maintain, available with 4wd and cheap. :)
Thug 08-01-2002 11:24 AM

A Justy wouldnt be nearly as much fun to drive as an SE-R or a VW though. Not to mention the parts are cheaper and much more pentiful for both. And both can be competitive in their class, where a Justy has virtually no chance.
Narcisse91 08-01-2002 12:16 PM

I like the Integra idea, but maybe because I drove a bunch of TSDs with mine before I sold it. The big problem is that if find yourself with a steep hill to climb while you're not moving to fast, you have no torque to make it up it quickly, although you'll be moving faster than I was in the TSDs, I hope, and it may not become a problem. Another issue there is even on the stock suspension, the ride gets very rough. I can remember a TSD (our winter series, at night, unpaved mountain roads, sometimes snow :) ) where I kept bottoming out and ended up ripping a hole in my exhaust because the ruts dug in the road were a lot deeper than I had in ground clearance.

It held up to the beating really well, though, and double wishbone all around is sweet.
Lifino 08-01-2002 12:21 PM

Which VWs are you suggesting? So far it's just been, "Get a VW!" no detail... I'm assuming something like a golf/rabbit(non-diesel)...

Did VW ever make a 4wd? Like that old Rabbit Truck thingey?

-Silas
JGard 08-01-2002 01:37 PM

See, I just have this thing about VW's... I hate them. I hate them with a passion. There's nothing else in life I hate more than VW (even the Yankees, and I hate them a lot).

So, as a moral standpoint, I cannot, and will not, get a VW. :)

We are building a dodge neon rally car.

it handels bad @$$ on tarmac and off road. its a 95 ACR with the 2.0 sohc motor and runs with my 2.2 OBS and will beat me off road with the work we have put into it.

its a fun little car and kicks butt in auto-x with some hoosiers on it.

Well, actually all VW Golf/Jetta cars would make excellent rally cars. Although in the interest of weight I would steer toward the Golf instead of the Jetta. Rabbits are pretty good also, although there doesn't seem to be nearly as many parts or cars out there to build a rally car out of.

Probably the most popular would be the A2 chassis cars ('86-'92).

Yes VW did make some AWD cars, however not really any Golfs or Jettas in the USA. There are some running around however. As a matter of fact there is a fellow i-club member who has a Golf converted to the Synchro drivetrain out of a Passat.

Lately VW has started to build alot of their newer cars with the AWD option known as 4-Motion. Perhaps in the near future we'll see an open class car made from an A4 chassis VW.

RX-7 = complicated if yer not a rotary mechanic. 323GTX = as rare and breakable as earlier posters have said. Other Mazda's? well protege's have been/are being rallied and Mazda's got a great Competiton Dept for the average racer.
Neons, VW's, SE-R's, Omni/Horizons, can't go wrong, lots of development's been done (in US).
Audi 4k's are cool, but a lot of hardware to maintain.
Light, compact, 2wd is the way to go for learning.

Have you ever been to a performance rally?

I would never expect to use a rally car, regardless of price, as a daily driver. You need another mode of transportation while you fix the car from the last rally. This form of motorsports is ROUGH on any car. I see you have a bike, but it won't work great as a parts hauler or winter transportation in New England.

My advice:

1) Keep your RS - you know it, you've cared for it, and we all know its cool.
2) forget perfromance rally till you can afford a real daily car AND a real race car.
3) rally-x - its easier and cheaper than rally.
4) mellow out - moving out of your parents' house while owning both an RS and a kickin bike is a lot as it is. Sounds like you have a pretty good situation already...

Privately for sale here in the sac area... It was at a weekend private used car sale thing that the local community college puts on every weekend. Lots of interesting cars and other things there at times... We sold our '69 mustang via it :)

1990 VW Jetta Wolfsberg Ed. for sale near here. $1600. Gonna look at that and a 1986 Toyota 4x4 for $900. I know the Toy is far from a gem. I talked to the owner of that already.

Yeah, well you really don't know my situation, and I maybe didn't provide all the information.

I HAVE to sell the RS. I need to move out of my house, and selling the car is the only way I can afford that right now.

Second, I'll need a beater for a while, until I get a promotion or a nice raise...seeing as how I've already been there a year, in another year from now, I should be much better of, financially.

Third, once I am better situated, and can buy another nice car for my personal vehicle (I'm moving to Boston, and won't need a daily driver), I will turn the beater I was just driving into a rally car.

iirc they had it in the turbo stang... a lot of parts are interchangeable...

on the other hand, switching in the sierra cossie motor and drivetrain would be nice too :)
biltmore 08-07-2002 03:37 PM

Well I haven't seen these cars mentioned..
Isuzu Impulse AWD turbo
Toyota Celica AllTrac ST165 or ST185

Kind of rare.. but if you keep looking you can find them cheap..

also... that Ford turbo motor you guys are talking about.. I have on in my 1960 Lancia Appia. There is probally about 5-6 of those motors in every wrecking yard.. so parts are cheap..
They were in Mecury Capris RS, Ford Mustangs GT, Ford Thunderbird TurboCoupes, and Merkur XR4ti.
Thug 08-07-2002 03:42 PM

And impossible to find parts for, unfortunately.

JGard 08-08-2002 10:57 AM

I'm moving to Somerville (most likely), and there's been street parking for every apartment I've looked at...and some have driveways, even.

I'm more worried about where to keep my motorcycle than I am the car :)
Rattler 08-10-2002 10:03 AM

I think I found mine! My buddy that had the Outback wagon has a 1996 Legacy wagon that was tagged on the pass. side doors. He is even throwing in the parts to fix it.

He also told me about a 2001 Lexus IS300 going through the auction last week here for $3500! It needed a rear clip.
