PICTURES. I want pictures :) Glad to hear you had fun.
Robin2 02-18-2002 12:07 PM

Yup.... 73 cars..... that's a pretty good turnout.....

Out here in Eastern Canada, we have a TSD series called the Yokohoma Winter rally Series (sponsored by Yokohama and Subaru Canada).....

There's 5 events and the average field is a minimum of 60+ cars....

The TSD starts around 9-10pm and ends around 7am..... with about 400 miles covered..... not for the novices......

Quote from Day 1 of Thunderbird...

Driver: CAST 60!?! Are you sure?

That seemed to be the theme. At any rate, my Blizzak MZ-01's did a pretty darn good job. We were still behind on the really slick downhill section on Saturday night. After that, no problems at all.

It was a blast.

More pictures! More pictures! Pictures of the dirty car! We want pictures of the dirty car! :D

Day 1 was pretty uneventful.. The only fun bit being the uphill cast 60 near the end of the day. If it hadn't been for that bit I reckon Glenn would have nodded off

Day 1 results saw us lying in 6th place, which wasn't too bad.

Day2 was also pretty uneventful and the driving was pretty easy. The results showed us running 0's at every control UNTIL ;)

We ran a little wide a a hairpin ran into the snow at the outside and got bogged. it took us around 18 minutes or so to get the car out. :(

The cast for this section was around 50kph.. Glenn then went into [Tommi Makkinen voice on ] Maaximum Aaatack [/tommi voice ] mode

The highest speed that i saw on the computer as we past 8 cars wiithin 5 or 6 kms was 147kph !!!!! This was on packed snow and ice.

It was an awesome ride and the best bit of the whole weekend :D

Unfortunately , when braking for a tightening left hander, the brake and turn in point was rutted ice at 90 degrees to the direction of travel and we went off into another snow bank at around 110kph.... :(

Luckily there were no rocks or trees stumps buried in the snow

As we got out of the car we knew that it was pointless to even attempt to try to dig it out, so far was it buried into the snow.

So we waited in the sunshine for the sweep truck to show up...

1st sweep appears, hooks up and tries to pull us out... Only to fail.

The 2nd sweep then tries, after about 5 attempts they managed to extract us. No damage done to the car, not even a scratch.

While doing this 3rd sweep arrives and also buries himself into the snow bank  so we had to extract them

We then spent another 20 minutes or so getting the packed snow etc out of the radiator and from around the brakes and suspension.. and then headed straight back to the finish for food .

Congratulations go to Ryan and Max (Bateau) for finishing as top Seattle entrants. IIRC they got 12th overall and 5th in unlimited class. Well done for an awesome result on your first Tbird..

Car #19

I've sent my story for the weekend to www.rallybc.com (it's too long to post here). Starting Thursday, we had one nightmare after another. I suppose the most notorious calamity was locking the car, and then keys in the trunk, just 1 hour before the rally started. Way to go me!

Despite all our troubles we fluked 1st in class and 7th overall. Like all the other competitors it would have been much better if only... you get the picture.

My 15yo son (Owen) navigates and I've come to realize that his education is well spent (at least in math) :)

Special thanks to Pat Richard who presented us with 2 Subaru Canada presents. I wonder if Owen will ever take his off.
Subie Gal 02-19-2002 11:11 AM

fluked... yeah right!! i believe that... ;)
u aint foolin nobody! :D

job well done!!! :)

Anyone know what type of wheels were on the white GC8 from Washington (I think it was car #11)?
Subie Gal 02-19-2002 07:29 PM

I'm pretty sure those were team dynamics...
i can call/email Andy and find out for ya...

he bent one of them really, really bad

I'm finding it impossible to source 4 Raceline RL-7s. AV Sport are suggesting the Speedline 2118s in 15x7 with a 53 offset.

I wondered if these were the same but from the few pictures it does look like the white wheels have more spokes.
eclipsefire 02-19-2002 08:22 PM

Sounds like you had a blast I wish I had the money to get involved into something like that. Oh well I guess I will just stick with my go-karting for now. :D

Congratulations to Speedracer47 who followed up last year's novice victory at TBird with a win in the paper division, placing in the top 1/3 of all competitors with an old stock XT6 and barely usable auxillary lights. (last year's performance was with no additional lights). If he could just learn to slow down a bit he could have done even better as he was early at 37 of the controls including the 60kph section on Saturday.

He now has 5 class victories in 5 attempts, and the winner of the 2001 PCC.
patr 02-19-2002 10:02 PM

Hey peter,

the speedline corsa's I have used as well:

http://www.rallyedequebec.com/photos2002/ste-croix1.jpg

but you really, really should be able to find some racelines.

I have tried them in 6 and 7 inch... I dont remember which offset for 7 inch... they do clear the 4pot stis (which are ont he car)

If you want used ones RL7s email me I think I know where there are some.
Petrie 02-20-2002 01:31 AM

Pat: you've got mail.
johnfelstead 02-20-2002 12:31 PM

well i just got home to sunny manchester. ;) Pretty knackered so i wont post any story just yet. First of all a big thanks to everyone on the event (except the ******** in car 10 BMW and car 18 audi, they almost cost the rally two written off Impreza's "wasnt me govner, honest" grrrrrrr  )

I looked at the results for the first time and we have a whopping 58 second penalty for the last stage when we actually zeroed it, i have mailed the guys at the event to try get that one sorted, the control car has screwed up our time by one minute there!

Without that Jamie and I finished 11th, our little incident stage 2 day 2 droped us from 7th overall. I am just glad we didnt do what we thought we had, hit a tree hard with the rear quarter. Jamie and I both thought we were gonna be looking at a smashed in rear end for sure! That ice stage 1 and 2 day 2 was evil.

I have to say Jamie showed that women have balls too. I know she has the ability to do well in rallies but TBird showed she has the guts to push it hard, even when she was scared of the surface she was driving on too. Top job Jamie, very proud of you having the guts to keep on trying all the way!!

Just to show the ability Jamie has, we were the only team to zero the entire length of the longest stage of the rally, you know, the stage Glenn and Richard stuffed it big style on. ;):D:lol:

OK, i need to find my bed, been travelling for 24 hours and i am knackered.:D I'll be back..........
Subie Gal 02-20-2002 12:36 PM

thanks JF... twas fun!!

bit scary at times!! but mega fun!!!
Jamie HATES ice.... hehehehehe

*were we really the only team to zero that stage*????
woohooo! :D

glad ya made it home ok M8!

Jamie

psoper 02-20-2002 03:09 PM

We would have come real close to zero-ing that big one, but for a damn truckload of snowmobiles that wouldn't let us by- but I guess it's just one more part of the "adventure" aspect of BC rallying.

So sorry to hear of your problems on the ice there subiegal, I found the Michelin Arctic Alpins to be extraordinarly sure footed throughout the event, not even a little scary.

I was really expecting much more difficult conditions, but I can't complain, the whole weekend was a real blast!

I'm really bummed thet C2C is the same time as Rim, so much for my shot at the whole PCC calendar this year, probably yours too, eh Jamie?

Subie Gal 02-20-2002 03:52 PM

Yeah, not sure i'll be able to do many TSD events this year...
they are loads of fun, but now, ClubRally comes first! :)

was good fun, i think i just need more practice on the ice ;)
we dont get much of that around here!

Jamie
johnfelstead 02-20-2002 09:34 PM

Hey Jamie, yep we were the ONLY team to zero that stage, pretty good i think. :D

Day two was pretty damn impresive really, ton's of zero's. The guys at TBird are taking another look at our bogus penalty so should have that one sorted soon. :D

I thought you coped fantastic on the ice, even though it wasnt much fun in a few places. One mistake is all you made all event on a real nasty blind crest on sheet ice, we actually lost 3 seconds there max but stopping to check the car did us the other 27. Kind of a releif there as we were sure the damn tree had taken a chunk out of the rear. That wasnt a snow bank that saved us, it was a damn ice bank, those steel wheels are strong as hell!!!! Our total score day2 was just 32 points genuine, 30 of that was from that one mistake on stage 2, thats absolutely awesome teamwork when you think about it!

Those Haka's were great on the snow, did a pretty good job on the ice, the big problem was there was not much lateral grip, once it was going sideways the weight of the car just kept it on going, Ice race tyres next year i think. ;)

The stage that killed us time wise was the last stage day 1. We missed a cast change entry and when you are running a laptop and you do that everything turns to crap. The times we set in there were all over the place, Jamie was driving absolutely to the second as far as the laptop was telling us, the problem is that put us miles off where we should have been. Another TSD leson learned, tripple check everything! :D (i did day 2 and it shows!)

I'll get round to writing a novel soon enough, not sure why i am up right now, i have to be in work in 6 hours. Dont you just love jetlag. :D

P.S. Watch out guys, Jamie is gonna kick your asses when she is let off the leash in special stage rallies. Show them no mercy J. :D:lol:
Subie Gal 02-21-2002 08:15 AM
