tinting foglights? part 1

Capt Crunch 06-16-2003 08:04 AM

tinting foglights?
here is my latest wacky idea. I have sti projectors, and I love how it has a dominant black color to it. The fogs used the match the OEM lights but now they don't. I wan't them to match. First I wanted the Hella black magic lights, but those don't fit. Than I was going to just tint the fogs straight on, but that would leave the fogs with a non-glossy surface, and would not match the sti lights in "texture." So then I thought, what if I got another lense and put it over the tinted foglight? Sounds cool eh?

Anyone have any idea where I can get a lense to go over the foglight? What kind of thint shoud I use? And alternative ideas?

Thanks
TaiChih 06-16-2003 12:26 PM

I am doing that with my fogs, but in yellow. You can go to a plastic sheet supply store and buy a sheet of tinted plastic. Next, use a heat gun to mold the plastic over and around the fog light and Voila, removable tinted fog covers.

get some Night Shades available at summitracing.com

i use it on my other car and it works great. :) good looks,
and it doens't stop the illuminicity (sp?) that much.

tinted or colored lens cover
Saw this link from another thread:

I suppose the 35% smoked sheet could work. The site says it's a 16.5 mil thick sheet, which is thicker than most of the 3M scotchcal used for paint protection (9~12 mils), but thinner than ones for headlight/fog protection (40mils). You can adjust how dark you want it to be by adding more tinted layers.
prelude/2.5rs 06-16-2003 10:59 PM

It's funny you brought up that site, Satrya. I just installed a set of the yellow film I ordered from them last week. The install is real easy and it gives it an aggressive look. It doesn't distort the light at all. As far as the color yellow it gives off...it's really not that dark of a yellow. I was looking to get the GT look from the film, but it's not that dark amber light. It's definetly a yellow, though. It's a well spent $20. I know they have other colors like blue and tinted black. They deliver quickly too.

I suppose you could order another set and overlay them to get a stronger color. Perhaps you could post a photo so we can see how it looks (I know the vendor site has photos too, but sometimes, they're not necessarily accurate). It's hard to compare, but how does the one yellow layer compare to the photo below? I used stained glass spray paint, and although the yellow hue is deep enough, I didn't like the fact that it was difficult to achieve a smooth, thin layer of paint. A pre-colored clear film (like the one you purchased) would probably be a better idea.

I'll take some pics today. I'll try to post them on this thread, but I have been unsuccessful in the past doing so. Does anyone have a step-by-step on posting pics? I'll see what I can do.
The yellow looks very similar to yours, Satrya. Mine stands out a bit more because my car is WRB. Looks good though!

Well, aside from using the "IMG" button to attach a photo, the only other thing that people usually have problems is finding a place to host the photo. Make sure you host it on some server instead of linking it to your local drive.

There is also a transparent vinyl you can just stick over your fog lights. Comes in 30 colors. (for our purposes there is two shades of grey for a smoked look). I've done it and it looks pretty nice. But now I went to blue (show reasons). Anyway, PM me for more info.

Color choices aside, how does the material differ from the polyvinyl sheet such as the one in the lamin-x site?
glilly 06-17-2003 03:23 PM

probably not much different, ...Oracal makes the vinyl I stock, ..same principal though. ;)
Lamin-X 07-24-2003 10:51 AM

Bear in mind that our films have a dual purpose. First - protection of the lens. The colored films are 16.5 mils thick with a hard outer rebounding layer. Essentially providing the strength of a 33 mil film. Having a film this thick and strong prevents the lens from getting damaged and pitted. Kind of like cheap insurance. Secondly - optical color change. Spray on tints are a pain to get consistent and they eventually fade out. Our colored protective films are molded to have consistent color. Just thought we'd throw our .02 in for ya. Thank you for those who have took the intiative to purchase from us and your kind words to go with it. :D

Lamin-X is great stuff, my friend has it on his Golf and it looks sick. I keep forgetting to order some for my car though. Also, Subaru makes a clear plastic cover for the foglights. I bought some when I first got my car (before I saw the mesh ones). They're like $35 for the set and they just snap on over the light. Those could prob be tinted and they're removable.

Yup, I ordered from http://www.lamin-x.com/ and got the yellow covers.

How wide are stock WRX Fogs? I really want to get the yellow film, but I have no idea how wide the stock fog is (and I can't measure them rigt now :-( )
WRXcellerate 07-26-2003 11:01 AM

They sell a pre cut kit for the wrx fog lights, also do yall know if it would be fairly easy to remove night shades from the outside of the fog lights if it turns out to look bad??
Lamin-X 07-29-2003 10:42 PM

Any mineral spirits should remove athe spray tint. Truthfully our smoked films would be much better than spray. You get a consistent tint. It protects the lens from getting pitted or cracked. A peel and stick installation procedure. Then just peel the film off if you really wanted to remove it.
Schleppy 07-29-2003 11:01 PM

I'll have a Lamin-X yellow fog kit shortly. I'll let everyone know how I like it...

So far their service has been great!
ent2b 07-30-2003 11:25 PM

wasn't some vendor just selling this on here for like $20? i know it wasn't my imagination, but when i search for the thread, i dont see it. any clue, anyone?
ent2b 07-30-2003 11:49 PM

oh wait...that was another board.

DOH...old age is here.

rjones 07-31-2003 10:49 AM

I am probaly dumb, but I cant tell what size to order on the laminx site... i guess we have large foglights?

rj
rjones 07-31-2003 11:00 AM

yep, I am dumb. I just found the pre-cut section.

Ordered me a pair! Now I'm going to get some yellowstars for the headlights and I will peirce the fog.

Capt Crunch 08-06-2003 06:41 PM

Give me a couple days, I just got them today and I'm waiting for the clear plastic fog covers...
SubSonic 08-06-2003 10:09 PM

I installed mine and they are awesome! Easy to install and precut!

I got the yellow fog protectors for my blue wrx.
They are thick like stonegard.

A+ for Lamin-X

I will try to post pics sometime.
Dick Fitzwell 08-06-2003 11:25 PM

Oh, I forgot to give my little review :-)

I have the competing film (Autobahnd or whatever it's called) on my Morettes and I definately like the Lamin-X a lot more. The install was very easy, they were cut perfectly, and they look REALLY cool. Also, because they aren't as thick as the autobahnd, they were much easier to work with, and probably won't crack in the winter like the autobahnd did...

Thanks Lamin-X! Do you make a kit for the Morette headlights? If so, I'll buy it!
Lamin-X 08-12-2003 10:52 AM

Not exactly sure what the Morette lights are. Are those the rally style with three lights? Even if precut kits aren't available yet the films can be purchased uncut. Installation is still very simple and clean. http://www.lamin-x.com/LightProtection.html
N'CTRL 08-12-2003 11:27 AM

Oh ya, I new I wanted to post pics of my car in this thread. So far these are the best shots (taken by other people so far) that I have...

BTW Lamin-X, these are Morettes...

Lamin-X 08-13-2003 10:31 AM

Very nice  Even though we make and sell it everyday, it never ceases to impress me when applied to customers lights. Haven't seen Morettes around our area. Not sure if demand would be great enough to make it cost effective. I would defintely suggest buying some uncut clear film and protecting those from getting pitted or damaged. Easy to install and just trim to fit.

Lamin-X 08-21-2003 11:53 AM

Very nice pics of the Smoked on fogs.

FromMugen2STI still working on the GC8. They are very rare here. We have been in constant contact with the local Subi dealer, but no avail. I would suggest measuring your fog lights. Believe they are very similar to the 02-03 WRX 6 5/8" round fogs.
MattJP 08-22-2003 12:15 PM

??
Does the material wrap around the edges or just flush with the facing surface?

Looks like a cool idea. I would buy uncut and fit my own..

Thanks!!

Matt -
Lamin-X 08-25-2003 10:32 AM

The film is very pliable and can be curved around edges. Especially if you heat it up with a heat gun or blow dryer. Then it becomes very soft and flexible. Easy to install an uncut. Just apply the film and trim by guiding a razor blade along the edge of the lens.
jbilbo 12-03-2003 12:44 AM

Thread back from the dead:

Capt, where did you get the fog snap on covers? I'm about to order the same Lamin-x smoked film to put on top of those snap on covers.

Thanks in advance!
dbrier 12-04-2003 07:41 AM

How much light do smoked ones block?
abaxter34 12-04-2003 07:35 PM

ill second what jbilbo said, where did they come from, they look tight
Capt Crunch 12-04-2003 08:37 PM

I've gotten a rish of PMs on this, so here is my exact setup:

smoked foglight covers from lamin-x.com they block about 35%

I put these on top of plasic Australian OEM foglight covers, which I got from spimotorsports.com

Hope this helps everyone.
uptownWRX 12-05-2003 10:39 AM

I don't know about fogs but I at on time used night shades on the upper part of my red/clear taillights. They came out like this:
