To all those who cut their sti keys @ home depot part 1

sir_aspen_white 02-16-2003 05:07 PM

To all those who cut their sti keys @ home depot...
I just got my Sti blank keys for my GC8 and...

Three Home depots and one 'professional' locksmith refused to cut the keys. Granted, I know that the GC8 keys are a bit thinner, they just wouldn't do it. My keys fit the #37 hole on their machine (the Home Depot machine that you drop both keys and the machine automatically cuts, not the old fashion ones), but the blank one doesn't. They claim that there's no way the new key will fit into the #37 cassette.

What did everyone tell them to do? The locksmith said that the blank keys didn't have the little 'notch' my keys have, and he has no idea where to start the cutting- in fact, he said he can't gaurantee the cut, but he can gaurantee that it won't work.

I'd also be a big help if anyone from the metro-Detroit area could tell me where they did theirs. Cheers!

Take it to a real locksmith. It isn't worth having them tool up your brand-new, sweet key. I went to a professional who did it for about $7.00. Works great.
Sputnik 5 02-16-2003 07:01 PM

dont go to home depot
listen to twitch..

I went to an actual lock and key shop and they did it for like 7 bucks, no problem. Osh hardware told me that I would have to go to the dealer:rolleyes:
Precentor 02-16-2003 07:57 PM

If you go to the dealer they should be able to do it too,
I used to work at a ford dealership and would cut keys all the time
wilrace 02-16-2003 07:59 PM

I had my key cut at the home depot and no problems did it for free.

Me too. The guy at the key station did look at it kinda funny for a second and said:

Dayamn! That key is off the HOOK!
stirex 02-16-2003 11:28 PM

Home depot wouldnt cut mine either, took it elsewhere that had an older cutting machine... no probs and no charge
whiterabbit 02-17-2003 12:27 AM

i got mine cut at homedepot...for free too..the guy said he had no guarantee thought but mine works fine.
Siper2 02-17-2003 12:46 AM

And all these locksmiths had to shave the key down a bit, right?

And does it fit in the trunk??

I like the STi key, 'tis very cool, but for what most places charge for it, it seems to me like a goofy investment, since for most people you can't even use it in the trunk. So this is why I ask. :)

I took it to one of those key kiosks in the mall, they wouldn't do it because the key wouldn't fit their machine. Then took it to a professional locksmith and it took the guy about 2 minutes to do and charged me $2.00... couldn't ask for more.

The only reason he was hesitant to do it at first was he said a lot of the aftermarket keys are completely made of steel, and it wrecks the cutting wheel when they put it through... but he said afterwards the STI wasn't bad.
Soon2bSubbieowner 02-17-2003 01:10 AM

All of you have WRX keys though.. what about him with his older 2.5RS.. will it still work ?
krazedant 02-17-2003 03:03 AM

I went to a the local hardware and he did it for $2.00 in 30 seconds.

This was the same type of reaction I got at the locksmith. He looked at it for a minute, determined that it wasn't 100% steel and then cut it. Two minutes and $4.50 later I had one cut STi key not to mention a locksmith for life.

The locksmith I went to checked the STi key with a magnet before starting just to make sure it wasn't steel. He determined it wasn't & 3-5 minutes later I had a cool key.
Supapooh 02-17-2003 10:52 AM

Home depot cut mine for free as well. :D The girl who did it was a real cutie too and just had to see what kind of car it was going in :o
willguidry 02-17-2003 10:52 AM

I brought mine to one of my local subbie dealers. Call around first, and pick the one that has the most knowledgable guy working in the parts department. It took high a couple passes to get it just right.

However, the STI blank is MUCH thicker than the GC8 key. DO NOT stick it into your ignition FIRST! I did and almost had to replace it cause it got stuck

Go to you passenger side door lock, and just keep jamming the key in and out, over and over again until it goes in smoothly. It will take approx 30-40 times, won't hurt your lock, but will wear down parts on the key that need wearing. Then, enjoy your brand new key!

Here's what mine looks like. excuse the photo, I have NO idea to make this digicam take cleaner pics. it's a 3.8mega pixel Kodak! And this is the crap it gives me. *sigh*

Zola 02-17-2003 11:15 AM

A high school kid at my local hardware store did it in a minute for 50 cents. No problems here, what's all the fuss about? :D

I can see why they wouldn't want to risk screwing up your nice key and then have to compensate you if something went wrong. But it's just a key!!

I know this is a little off topic but where are most of you buying your keys from?
twitch 02-17-2003 02:17 PM

machv.com...I actually live nearby & stopped in to pick it up.
cnstman 02-17-2003 02:18 PM

Fat tits, (that name KILLS me)

Read my above post. You "shouldn't" need to shave it, just work it in one of your unused locks.

Worked for me.

Cheers

DON'T abuse it. Just slide it in. Pull it back out, push it back in, try turning it softly, pull it back out, etc.

It worked for me, and my key is made of Titanium, so if that worked, YOUR key should do the same.

Just be suave with it, treat it like a lady. ;)

I was wondering if you were going to pick up on the Freudian slip, there.
JDM5LugHatch 02-17-2003 07:39 PM

Ok , being that I am a professional locksmith I will chime in here. The GC8/RS uses the old style Nissan ignition thats right Nissan and didnt switch over to the new style Nissan ignition until the WRX came out well they used it on the forester I believe before the wrx. No key for a vehicle is made out of steel or any other residential/commercial style lock unless it is a flat steel key designed for bank style safe locks. The key will need to be shaved down in order to work in the older style ignition hence the reason nobody with a WRX has a problem with their key going in the lock and the people with rs's do. I DO NOT RECOMMEND modifing the blank to work in the older style ignitions and I could go into a million reasons on why but I wont. There are several people that have done this and havent run into any problems yet and may never run into any but the majority will. It may take awhile but the problems will eventually arise just like having a rack of stuff hanging from your keychain will put wear on your locks especially the ignitions. If a customer asked me to copy their RS (X123) key onto a STI blank I would refuse to if it was a good friend I may modify it for them but would worn against this I would never do it for a regular customer though. All to often I have people come in with keys cut from hardware stores and tell them before I cut it that my copy isnt going to work and it cracks me up to no end. They want to know why so I tell them oh they cut your key on the wrong blank there is no way to copy this key and get a working copy or the spaces and depths are off and so on or better yet both sides of your key are cut different. I am so good at my job I am conceited most of the time.
Siper2 02-17-2003 08:10 PM

Thank you, that's what I was looking for. :)
willguidry 02-17-2003 08:19 PM

S2, Just order the "fashionable" STI key. The one I posted a pic of. It's SUPAH SWEET! ;) And fits the GC8.

Cheers

Home Depot cut mine also.

He was not going to do it til I told him to just give it a try and I wouldn't hold him responsible if it messed up.

It was scary but came out perfect
JDM5LugHatch 02-17-2003 09:00 PM

siper- you are welcome

Fat Tits 02-21-2003 06:46 PM

ah hem....

so i shaved it down and it now works fine in the ignition, but not in the doors or trunk. it will only go about 1/4" into the lock and then to a dead stop, even if i fiddle i get no where with it. i have keyless entry and a spare if needed so its not a HUGE problem but id still ike it to work.

should i shave it more?

thx

ditto...

where are the best prices? How come some places sells them for $30 and some for $20? Should I be worried about replica keys or are they all Genuine JDM STi keys?

thanks
Pocon 02-24-2003 11:12 AM

I just had my key cut at Home Depot on Friday and it scared the hell out of me when I couldn't take it off the ignition. For a while I thought I had to drive and park my car with the key on the ignition forever. I went to a friend of mine who is a locksmith and he was able to turn the key to the lock position and finally of. Apparently, the groove of the key is different as compared to stock. As mentioned earlier, it is thicker.

Is it worth the shave down?
sonicblue 02-25-2003 11:18 PM

For WRX owners with STI keys.......
This thread has quoted conflicting opinions at Home Depot, so skip them and go to Lowes!!!! I took mine there today and they have the newer key cutting machines (Axxess I believe is the manufacturer of them). In the "Auto" block of test fitting slots, it fits #35 (it's the one farthest to the right). That tells them which "clamping unit" to use. Insert key, insert blank, push button, done, no charge, works perfectly.

Sorry to the RS owners if your factory key provides some obstacle but, WRX owners, have no fear on this one.
kingsubi 02-26-2003 05:15 PM

As a proud RS owner I am also a proud STi key bearer!

Works in the driver door, ignition and trunk - but not in the passenger but that is what automatic locks are for...

RS owners have to make sure that they get the old style STi keys from Japan instead of the newer ones.
