Tracks accross the USA... part 1

Tracks accross the USA...
holla folks....

i'm fairly new to the world of 'HPDE'... and i wanted to experience different tracks.... i've had the privilage on running on the following tracks...

Thuderhill
Sears Point
Reno-Farnley
Laguna Seca

Button willow i almost made it... but my engine didn't quite make it :(

so... I was just looking for suggestions on tracks to hit up (anywhere in the US really)... and why?

track days are so much more fun that i've imagined!

Watkins Glen in NY (http://www.theglen.com/)
If you have power, you really get to stretch out your car.

Mosport near Toronto (http://www.mosport.com/)
Insane elevation changes. Turn 2 is like an initial roller coaster drop . Most turns here are completely blind. Challenging.

(edit: sorry, I missed the why)

texas world speedway - before it dissappears! after they build houston superspeedway, TWS may no longer be.

Elkhart Lake (Road America) in Wisconsin
Road Atlanta

My favorite is truly VIR.

VIR - It has everything. Fast corners, slow corners, combinations, a lot of elevation changes... A novice will take a while to learn every corner.

Mont-Tremblant and Mid-Ohio. Both are not particularly long, but very technical. And most important of all, great flow and some interesting elevation change. Extremely enjoyable to drive on both.

Watkins Glen - It's fast, and it has great historical background.

I've also driven at Thunderhill. If you like that course, you should like Mont-Tremblant and Mid-Ohio.
suby_dude 01-11-2004 12:00 AM

Tensen - way cool pix!

i don't think i've been at a track w/ grass on the side of it....

Thunderhill--- dirt
Reno - dirt
sears point - i can't recall
laguna seca... well i was there when it was raining... so MUD

I wish I have pics that are further out to show the terrain better...

Mosport turn 1

Mosport turn 2

As you can see from the skidmarks in the top of turn 2, it's pretty scary (imo). Steady decline and off-camber turn.

Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia (http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com/)

Lots of run-off space, although not as much as VIR looking at FSlekler's pics. :) Pretty fast track with a slow technical section of 3-4 turns. Fairly simple layout. Not much elevation change. Comfortable track to run.

Here are 2 pics from Summit Point.

Turn 6 (slow section)

Turn 8 (exiting slow section)

How's it going, Ray? Long time no speak!
Puckaveli 01-11-2004 11:55 AM

I like Beaver Run in PA. beaverun.com It is the only track in the US with a polymer/tramac surface, it's very sticky and easy on tires.

awesome pix guys.
bemani 01-11-2004 01:05 PM

You can also go try Portland International Raceway, its pretty close to us ...

I managed to run and come back home in the same day
sdecker 01-12-2004 07:16 AM

Suby Dude,

Come on down to Road Atlanta some time...just make sure you bring an extra set of brake pads.

I've got lots of pics but no place to host 'em. :(

Shrink them a little and "attach" them. I'd like to see your pics. :)

Another vote for VIR. I love the high speed S's. Here I am on turn 3.

I like the back woods small tracks that time has almost forgot. Ya the surface has bumps and patches but if 50 people show up its a lot and then you have room on the track. Some of these are Nelsons Ledges south of Cleveland, Grattan by Grand Rapids, and Gingerman in west Michigan. I know you will probably never go to tracks like these but for the people in the area. Best of all they are half as much as running at Mid-Ohio or the other larger facilities.
This is the google search for tracks in the US its handy, the majority is circle racing tracks and drag strips.

OK, only one I have right now...turn 1 at Road Atlanta. That's a red 911 on the far right. I'm about to go up the *steep* hill leading to 2-3. I'll try and attach some others later...

Road America. Nothing else like it. 4 miles. Not for the faint of heart however. :)
GoodFinder 01-12-2004 09:45 AM

I've heard good things about the new track outside of Birmingham, Alabama called Barber Motorsports Park. It's supposed to be a very technical, high grip low wear track, with nice elevation changes and quite a few "blind entry" points. Porsche moved their PDE (Porsche Driving Experience) school there (in addition to the sessions they do down at Sebring in Florida) and I hope to get over there in the next few years to try it out. I've driven over 1,700 road course track miles in the past several years, but only at 5 different courses so far (Bondurant, Texas Motor Speeday, Motorsport Ranch, Texas World Speedway, and Sebring). This thread, with all the pics and comments, definitely excites me to plan some future trips around track time!

I second the barber track...

It is like no other facility in North America...

Landscaped campus, on site motorcycle museum (largest collection in the world), you can see 80% of the track from most of the spectator areas, incredibly smooth surface, etc...

Heartland Park Topeka, Ks.
That's where zzyzx normally runs at. I have ran there several times.
The track has several configs.
1.8mile

2.1 mile

2.2 mile

2.5 mile Grand Prix Course

The front straight is being moved from the drag strip to pit lane and a new pit lane is being setup.

SCCA, BMW, PCA, Audi clubs and more have HPDE events there.

There is also Hallett Motor Racing Circuit just west of Tulsa, OK. There is a local club by the name of COMMA that has track days there once a month and sometimes more.

Steve - lemme know if you're ever gonna be in the area - i can definetly make arrangements for track time if i have enough prior notice - i'd love to run barber or road atlanta sometime

Penguinking 01-12-2004 02:57 PM

btw another great "local" track is Roebling Road - though it still attracts some SCCA club racing and PCA events, the facility is alot cheaper than the big name tracks and its tons of fun - best of all its very easy to learn but difficult to become fast on.
makofoto 01-12-2004 03:55 PM

I was talking to a retired big time sports car racer ... and mentioned that the corkscrew at Laguna Seca must be pretty scary in a powerful car ... he laughed and said not at all ... the entrance to the cork screw is slow ... and you just accelerate down the hill ... BUT he said if you want scary ... in a FAST car ... then it's Mosport ... all those fast blind corners ... :-)

If you are talking about the VIR event in March: No it is not hard to get us out there, there will be at least two STi's in that event :D But probably 4-5 Evos too :); not to mention all the Bimmers ;)

Unfortunately, no. Road Atlanta is really difficult to get people to come to, for some reason. I am usually the only one there. :(

The Bimmer guys don't seem to mind though. I think their heads would snap off if there were more than one Subaru to keep track of in their mirrors. ;)

Scott
FSelekler 01-13-2004 08:57 AM

LOL, rgr that :)
sdecker 01-13-2004 09:06 AM

I must admit though, a mildly race prepped E30 M3 is a wonderful thing...I must have one...
FSelekler 01-13-2004 09:44 AM

When I first saw the STi, I said this is a modern E30 M3 :) Not that Bimmer guys would agree tho :D

I'm not a Bimmer guy per se, but I'd have to disagree for one simple reason:

weight

:)

I am a Bimmer guy, and you are right; that is why I added the word "modern", sometimes oldies were better in some respects :)
