Interior go buh bye!

Now this is what I call an interior. I'm working on removing the sound tar. Thought I'd post a pic of step 1.

I've seriously thought about it. But then I might as well go with a cage and racing seats and harnesses. This is still a street vehicle, so I want it to still look as "together" as possible. Bascically, I'm just stripping the floor of that stupid sound deadening tar, and then covering it back up with the carpet. I also cut away that stupid (HEAVY) insulation that covers the front toe boards.

Why? If you're so adamant about it still being a road-going car, it's going to get really annoying with all that sound deadener removed...

Is that pre- or post-tar?

It's still got the tar on there. The trunk is done, but I still have the entire passenger floor to do. As for the noise...I don't care. It's NOT my daily driver, it's my toy. Road/Engine noise, NVH from harsh suspension setup, noxious fumes, ruptured internal organs, etc. is of no concern to me. However, I want it to at least look by all outward appearances to be a tame, normal, comfortable/"stock" car. Until a passenger gets in, and wonders why the ride is so crapy, and why she has to yell to talk to me.
"What, I'm sorry, did you say something? I didn't think so beeetch!"

Sorry for being off-topic, but where'd you get that steering wheel? Is that the V7? Thanks! ;)

haha, thats funny..... how much weight do you expect to save by making your car very uncomfortable?

Got the steering wheel off a guy on eBay. They pop up from time to time on eBay or you can contact NASIOC vendors Gruppe-s or gr8wheels.
As far as weight goes, it won't be anything incredible. I'm collecting all the material I can so as to weigh it when I'm done. I have a small box full from the trunk, and it's heavier than it looks. I'm guessing maybe between 10 and 20 lbs? Maybe that's too hopeful, I dunno.

You could save even more weight by taking out the radio, as I doubt you're going to be able to hear it after this.

There are SO MANY easier, less intrusive ways to save 30 pounds.
I can't believe anyone would go to such lengths just to have a loud, harsh, unpleasant car to dirve with so little benifit.
Unbelieveable.

unbelievable? many rally cars have had all the sound deadening material removed, and i have personally seen several rs's alone with it done. i think its definitely believable. extensive, yes, but thats dedication to the hobby and/or sport.
| NicGordon | 11-15-2003 01:18 AM |
Exactly, this is a hobby car. I have the time to do it, and I enjoy working on my car. I understand that this isn't the most efficient way of reducing weight, or the easiest. But it's free, and every bit counts. Removing the stereo and speakers wouldn't be a bad idea. I rarely listen to it when I'm driving, I prefer listening to the revs of the motor. Though, when I'm cruising through town, I'd be able to hear it then, so maybe I'll keep it. We'll see.
The car is covered with a Dustop car cover.

My car is louder than any RS with sound deadening material removed, it pretty much came that way. So, I dont understand you guys talking about how loud and unpleasant its going to be with it removed... Its not going to make that much of a difference.

The Integra Type R doesn't have any sound deadening (spelling?) in it. Best way to do it, is to put some dry ice on it. When we build our race cars, I always get the fun task of removing the interiors. I just use a ball hammer to break it up, and maybe a puddy knife or a screw driver to get the clumps up. I will be you will be very suprised with the weight you will save. That stuff is heavy.
| NicGordon | 11-16-2003 01:40 AM |
Well, I'm working on when the temp is about 45 deg (F) or less. So the stuff comes up pretty easy in chunks about 1 sq. cm or bigger. You think dry ice would help even more? I may have to give it a shot.

I did my WRX a few months ago... make sure you rip that heavy padding off behind the dashboard on the fire wall. That weighs as much as the tar on the floor. All of mine was 10kg or a little over 20 pounds.
To all the people saying that the car will be much louder with the tar removed. It's not... I've had it both ways and I can't even tell the difference.

Yeah I ripped as much of that padding as possible out. Some of it is way up in behind the and is pretty much un-removable. But as the pic shows, I got a good majority of it cut out.

I saw in some mag where they removed all the deadening material and carpet, A/C and I think some seats. It only saved 100 LBS. I could see all that for a racer maybe.....But what is the point when your keeping you interior and probably going to add a stereo? Your going to spend a good amount of free time for 20LBS.
It's amazing what gets done when theres more time than money. Don't forget to add a few stickers

We have been told that, you just throw a bunch of dry ice in the car for a little while, and come back and the stuff comes out really easy. I will get a better idea from my friend who told me this though.

Most of that weight would have come from the A/C equipment. He isn't going to notice a huge difference on it, but he will notice something. Every little bit counts when taking out weight.

It all adds up. Some people spend hundreds of dollars for 20 lbs. (carbon fiber hood, racing seats, lightweight wheels, etc.). Besides, you can only do so much for replacing parts with lighter parts. Pretty soon you have to just plain remove parts.
Believe me, sooner or later the stereo will go. When the car is ready for the engine swap, the A/C will go buh bye also. I don't use my A/C anyway while I'm driving.
But all you nay-sayers can't be convinced. You either get it or you don't.

There is a reason my my car outhandles WRX's, even with 100 less hp :p Weight helps... Even 100lbs will help. During my track day back a couple months back at Thunderhill, I could take corner 1 with an instructor at about 85mph pushing the car to the limit (and freaking out the instructor to the point of asking me to brake next time!)
Then, on open track session, by just loosing the instructor I was able to take that corner at 90mph without even flinching or feeling like I was pushing the car nearly as much as with the instructor.
100lbs is worth it.

Oh, and also to you nay-sayers. You're talking to a guy who removed his windsheild washer bottle, owner's manual, baby seat tiedowns (on the rear deck), spare fuses, and loose change all in an effort to reduce wieght. There are a few other ways I've removed weight, but in an effort to not be flamed, I'll keep those a secret.
