Trailering the Suby across the country.. any tips?
Added some photos of the wrapped and loaded car in post 32.

I was just curious as to what you all think.
Im moving from NM to MD next month. Stopping in GA for a while.
Anyhow, Im putting my WRX on a trailer and towing it with a Uhaul. Should I do anything to it? Im afraid a cover will flap in the wind and screw up the paint. Thats a long drive and if I can do some preventative maintenance to save myself from some asspain and the car from some dmg I would like to do so. If anyone has any thoughts please chime in.

Thanks

Whatever you end up doing make sure the Uhaul has the brush behind the wheels (you mostly see this on campers or trucks that pull boats all the time). This prevents the back wheels from throwing rocks at your car the whole way.
wakeskate 11-08-2006 11:16 PM

shrinkwrap it or i would say maybe used some kind of straps to hold the cover on tight so it doesnt flap but i doubt it will mess up the paint
99 rs 11-08-2006 11:20 PM

^^That's not a bad idea either. I'd say bubble wrap, then shrink wrap though. You are going to look like a crazy person with a shrink wrapped car but at least it's to protect it (I'd do the same).
FWD WRX 11-08-2006 11:42 PM

painter's tape the whole front end then do whatever else is neccessary
Fred Fredburger 11-08-2006 11:48 PM

+1 on the painters tape! It may indeed look a little strange but it'll be safe. Also, don't forget to do the front of the side mirrors!
InfamousDX 11-09-2006 12:00 AM

Yea... BURY the front of the car in painters tape... mirror backs too.
sheepdog 11-09-2006 12:08 AM

I trailered my GC just as far as you're driving, behind a penske truck. The truck really took the brunt of everything. I just put a good thick coat of wax on beforehand
Psybin 11-09-2006 01:21 AM

Thanks for the tips.
I'll call Uhaul and see if the truck Ive got reserved comes with the brush guard.
Are you guys talking about the clear shrink wrap they use in packing places?

The painters tape is a good idea and i'll prolly go that route, i just dont want to go too crazy because Ill be in GA for the holidays and will unload everything, and be using the car. So I'll have to do it twice.

I cant wait, I'm almost out of NM, then 47 days terminal leave. I've got a full time Air Force Guard job lined up in Baltimore working A-10s, getting civilian pay.
USAF_Pignose 11-09-2006 01:36 AM

good stuff. i find out Jan 16th where my new orderes will be im hoping for Travis AFB in Cali.

so im in the same boat as you only i'll be doing CT to CA.

i usually go the painters tape route when i used to drive up to the shows. works great and peals of very clean. like the other said a nice coat of wax and because it will be a WINTER drive look into a nice sealer as well Klasse has a nice sealer out there i used it on my BMW at the start of every winter. paint always looked fresh and clean. mind you i was doing about 10-12K in the winter alone back and fourth to vermont for snowboarding.
Counterfit 11-09-2006 02:27 AM

Wouldn't it be better to fold the mirrors in than to leave them out, taped or otherwise?
wakeskate 11-09-2006 07:57 AM

im talking about shrinkwrap you put on boats, but was only sorta kidding
DangBruhY 11-09-2006 08:50 AM

I'd like to find out what you end up doing. I'd also like to see pictures and the outcome.
rkramer 11-09-2006 08:52 AM

you can get rolls of stuff that is basically 3 foot wide glad cling wrap at any home depot type store. just start walking around the whole car until the thing is encased. (it is the stuff used to 'palletize' shipping items, stack it on a pallet, start walking around the whole thing until it looks like a giant spider dinner.)
MF-DIF 11-09-2006 11:01 AM

I have a nose bra my wrx. I hardly use it, but it fits well and was under 100$. It covers the front bumper and front of the hood. They you would only have to tape your mirrors.

Check ebay.

+2 painters tape.... rocks + paint = :(

I've got some advice, as I trailered my STi from CT to CO on a U-Haul. If your car is lowered you will need some boards to get onto the trailer. My STi has about 4" of clearance and there was no way it was getting on the trailer w/o assistance. (I also used U-Haul) I also needed some 1.5" thick boards under the front wheels to avoid the fascia bouncing into the transport. If your ride is stock height you might not need the extra height, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

I wouldn't worry about damage. I had just had mine painted and it made the 1,800 mile drive without ANY damage.....all I did was put a fresh coat of wax on beforehand.....the truck will take the damage, and the sides of it will extend well past your Subie.

I bought some supplemental ratcheting straps from Home Depot (the really heavy yellow ones) and attached the car at the back to minimize bouncing or movement.....just made me feel safer.
vtecTHIS 11-09-2006 12:12 PM

hmm, my car is lower than most subies, and i drove right up on it. i wouldn't use a car cover unless you throw some painters tape or something on first. i covered my car after i was getting followed on the highway a few times to hide it, and by the time i got to CA (from VA) the paint had like fade marks all over it. it took alot of love to get it out.

+1 for this, wouldn't hurt to tape under this as well. at 65mph a rock can go through plastic or tape and chip your paint. the more protection the better

So you put it on boards while on the trailer? Mine is lowered on Prodrives so its not a lot. Good call on the extra straps.

I think I'll do the wrap thing, sounds like the easiest. Plus I would feel safer with a lot of the car covered.

I'll post pics and such when I've got it loaded up, I'm not leaving until 3 Dec.
Fred Fredburger 11-09-2006 06:56 PM

No, he used long 1.5" thick boards to get it on the trailer. Basically reducing the angle that you load the car at. It will be much safer to load (and unload) a lower/lowered car with 8' ramps than 4' ramps. Also, when unloading/loading, go very slow and use a spotter.
Psybin 11-09-2006 07:53 PM

Yes, I knew about that. There is a disclaimer on the Uhaul site saying my car is too low and I would have to use alternate loading methods. They had a page with these. I'll be able to use the curb method with my neighbors driveway.

trauma11 11-09-2006 09:59 PM

i know where you can get free bubble wrap if you pay shipping
mindchatter 11-10-2006 01:41 PM

I tried the curb method from virtually all angles and ended up needing two 8' long boards to load the car. IIRC the ramps on the transport are approx. 8-10' long, so it ended up being about a 14' ramp or so after overlap. I also needed two 1.5" thick boards under the front wheels during transport to ensure the car wouldn't bounce into the front of the trailer.

My car is on coilovers and has a hair under 4" clearance from the front bumper to the ground.....all of U-Haul's trailers are the same, so if your car measures close to mine you'll want to get the boards ahead of time. We ended up doing it day of departure and it was an unexpected pita.

Hey psybin, i work in a warehouse and use that shrink wrap all the time. Go to www.uline.com and you can get rolls of it, and they ship fast.

I can get some free also, thanks for the offer though.

Thanks for the tips all. Looks like I'll be buying some lumber as well as some wrap

What roll do you think I should get? Enough to wrap all the way around a few times and extra on the front. And enough to do it twice. The 2nd time for the GA to Baltimore trip. Thanks for the link, thats good stuff, I dont know what Home Depot has but I always have more luck buying random stuff like this online.

On another note, I was talking to the guy who works at the Auto Hobby shop on base. I already knew to strap it down by the wheels, but apparently if you strap it down by the axles he said it can bend them enough to cause vibrations. Something he ran into int he past. Just a FYI.
t3hWIT 11-11-2006 12:42 PM

Just some $8 insurance you might want to consider.

I'd say pick up maybe 2 rolls of the 30 x 1000 and you should be fine to wrap it twice, if you wanna go heavy on it, just get a few extras....
I'd like to find out what you end up doing. I'd also like to see pictures and the outcome.
I followed the instructions on the uhaul site about the loading and such.

Two 2X8 boards under the ramps to lessen the angle, about 5 feet long each. Then two 18 2X8 under the front wheels to raise the car up and prevent it from hitting the front of the trailer, those boards have to be exactly 18 or they wont work. I added an additional cargo strap going through the rear wheels and attaching to the side of the trailer.

A friend and I put a few strips of bubble wrap over the grill and front of the car, then went around about 5 times with the shrink wrap, ending in the front. Then put a couple layers over the hood, starting and ending on the existing shrink wrap on the side of the car. After that we went around it a few more times to hold those pieces down and add more layering. It all worked out pretty good. The 14 Uhaul V10 pulled the car quite nice and I stayed around 65MPH the whole way.

Sorry the photos kind of suck, I was in a hurry to leave and when I unloaded it was dark and cold..

hahaha sweet. thats way cool, almost looks like someone pranked you while your car was on the trailer..
Psybin 12-04-2006 08:14 PM

I did get some weird looks.

I saw no Imprezas of any kind until about 15min from my final destination. :(

And I did find a couple of good sized pebbles that had apparently gotten thrown on the hood, rolled down and got caught in the shrink wrap, so this was worth the effort.
DangBruhY 12-04-2006 10:30 PM

I'll have to keep that in mind when we move again.
