Ureshi c/f window spoiler install part 1

sjscooby 07-05-2006 12:37 AM

Ureshi c/f window spoiler install
I recently finally got a hold of one of these but after i test mounted it, the installation looks harder then it seems. The sides of the spoiler extend pass the rubber moldings, are they supposed to go over or under? in either case there is a gap/curve that the spoiler has on the window. I would imagine a strong adhesive would need to be used. I remember some have said to get a window repair shop to do the install but i was just wondering if there were any other methods.
living4surf 07-05-2006 12:45 AM

i think that it has to be glued in by a glass repair place and it goes under the rubber
billy boi 07-05-2006 12:46 AM

My PERSONAL experience ........... pay a shop to do it ! they only charge $20-$25
MINO 07-05-2006 03:54 AM

It's not that bad of an install with a second pair of hands.
I used winshield adhesive/black urethane that is in a caulking tube.
Been on my car for 3 years.

Do not use epoxy.
sjscooby 07-05-2006 05:40 AM

do i go to a windshield replacement shop or any glass shop ? body shop?
InfamousDX 07-05-2006 10:04 AM

Any body shop should be able to do it man... it's just urethane onto the glass.
theicewall 07-05-2006 10:12 AM

Post a picture once its installed in this thread. I really like the look of it and will probably get one at some point if I can find a good deal on it. Where did you buy yours from?

to my knowledge they don't sell or make them anymore. The only place I remembered getting them was visionaryracing.com. I am glad I got mine now, since they are so rare!

You can buy mine :) I stillh aven't installed it
sjscooby 07-05-2006 02:03 PM

thanks for all the help, i got the spoiler on ebay actually. They pop up every so often.
silverF4turbo 07-05-2006 04:16 PM

If they go underneath the rubber (weatherstripping)... does it leak? How do you seal it up?

I also have one sitting around waiting for install... which will probably be for sale if anyone wants it or I don't find time to install it :D
sjscooby 07-05-2006 06:10 PM

well turns out i just got back from a shop around here and the guy said it definitely won't fit the car. When the sides are forced under the rubber moldings, the center part as a pretty big curve going over the glass. Anyone else have this problem? The body shop guy thinks he sold me a bmw one and not one for a subaru.
bren wrx 07-05-2006 07:10 PM

pics of this spoiler, infamous?
InfamousDX 07-05-2006 09:40 PM

Surely bren.

And that's what I thought too sjscooby. The guy is on the forums.. I PM'd him about it but he assured otherwise. I'm gonna measure it against my bro-in-law's e46 m3 this weekend.

ureshi install
if you guys want to see it installed , i have pics of it on my car about 3/4 down on this page in the official "black" thread.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14355555#post14355555

as far as the install went, talk about a PITA.the spoiler is a very tight fit, and one person shouldn't install it alone. probably why they told you it wouldn't fit, because it seems like it shouldn't.

on the first attempt, i tried 06386 3m acrylic automotive tape. worked well for about 2 weeks, then i noticed it was slowly but surely popping up in places. i talked to my buddy who installs windshields and auto glass for a living and he suggested urethane, so here's what we did (it's easier with 2 people).

-clean glass thoroughly..we used isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

-mock up where you want it to fit. use tape to mark off, and tuck the left corner under the vertical rear windshield molding.

-keep the right side at a downward angle ( so spolier looks slightly crooked). tuck the right corner under the right side rear windshield molding. the reason is so you have space to apply the urethane.

-liberally apply urethane and slowly slide the right corner up into place, then apply pressure evenly to the entire spoiler, starting in the middle and working your way out to the outer edges ( this is where 4 hands comes in!).we used 5 min curing urethane so after about 2 minutes it was pretty solid in place. i then put a drop cloth over the spoiler and used a roller to make sure it was sticking flat.

-at this point there was a little drippage of urethane running down the rear windshield, so we let it dry and used a razor blade and some glass & dash to get the excess off...*IMPORTANT* make sure you don't let any of the urethane touch the antenna/heater lines.

-peel off your mock up tape and clean up...don't let it get wet for 24 hours and its a wrap.

in all, it took us about 15 min while both he and i were still at work on the clock  gotta love it!

HTH!

jasonG.

**ninja edit** the urethane has held up for 2 months and counting. here in Boston it rained about 20 days out of the entire month of June and the spoiler still feels bolted on!
InfamousDX 07-05-2006 10:58 PM

^^ Good stuff man, thanks from all of us. Does it contact the glass across the entire spoiler?
jason.g 07-05-2006 11:06 PM

^^
no problem. i was so frustrated when i installed mine because i couldn't find any info like that!

once you have 2 people to hold it down until the urethane cures, then yes the glass contacts with the entire spoiler.... at first mine arched in the middle also, which is exactly why the 3m tape didn't work. that arch just pulled the tape up slowly starting with the center.
sjscooby 07-06-2006 01:49 AM

wow thanks alot jason.g, thats exactly what i wanted to hear. At the body shop, the guy actually had a bmw in the shop with an almost identical spoiler. Side by side they looked almost identical, even down to the indentation. The one i have is exactly like the one pictured by infamousdx.

I'll try what jason.g said and see how it goes. The only thing i'm worried about is actually getting the spoiler straight onto the glass. When i did the test fit it seemed almost impossible to get it straight since i had to jam it under the molding and push hard upwards. I'll give it another go though, i'm glad i don't have to sell this thing just yet.
ZoomnWRX 07-06-2006 10:42 AM

use some 3m body panel double sided super sticky stuff. that's what i've used to mount mine. it's been on for over a year now. it's seen speeds of 120+ and multi-houred 75/80 highway cruising with no problems...
InfamousDX 07-06-2006 11:40 AM

^^ Was yours a tOIGHT fit as well?
BUCKman_02 07-06-2006 03:58 PM

Ha! wow that spoiler looks sweet. If i didn't have a wagon I would totally get one,,, It would look great on an E46 M3 IMO

really? thats what i did originally and it pulled right up...see above post.
D Money 07-06-2006 05:14 PM

Thanks for the info on how to install it, it should help most of us out who haven't installed our's yet! Is it reversable, like if I ever wanted to take it off would I be able to or would the rear window be ruined?
MINO 07-06-2006 05:23 PM

Personally, I would not use double sided tape. Like I mentioned, I've had this on for 3 years, almost 4. I can hear slight creaking at the back under certain conditions (speedbumps, driveways, etc). This indicates flexing to me. And after all these years of weather and stress, the resin finally cracked. I would assume the tape will give much sooner than CF/resin.

good question..i honestly don't know.
didn't even think about it since i didn't even plan on taking it off ever.
mine is on there pretty good..the spoiler would probably break if i tried to pull it off.

this is OT but D-Money..do you still have the bugeye? thats one of my all time fave cars here on nasioc...was my screensaver for a looooooooooong time :D

haha really? the black one right? Yeah, still got it, just wait until the new pics of it, you will have another screensaver. It's getting painted, advans, brides, cusco cage, all sorts of goodies. Should be done just after my STI 6MT and drivetrain get put in!

SWEET! then you can sell your Works to me.

i'm serious.

sjscooby 07-08-2006 03:50 PM

i called the local pepboys and they don't even know what urethane is. Where did you get yours from? i'm thinking maybe home depot would have it.
jason.g 07-09-2006 12:03 AM

Hey sjscooby
Try HD, Lowe's or any other reputable hardware/diy home improvement place. Tell them you're looking for glass adhesive and they should point you to an aisle with an ungodly amount of sticky stuff..only get urethane though...don't get Goop, gorilla glue or epoxy. If they don't have any, go to a local auto glass install shop and try to buy some, but they might try to talk you into letting them install it ;) .

FWIW my local Pep Boys only specializes in glow-in-the-dark ricer shift knobs & such...if it wasn't for them having the cheapest cases of Royal Purple in the area I'd say that they are pretty much useless.
NewShockerGuy 07-09-2006 01:58 AM

I don't want to sound like a dick but that doesn't look right on our back windshields...

If it went all the way across and was flush then it would be ok but the fact to me that it doesn't go all the way across...

Using's Jason's pic:

The corners are what I am talking about... I don't like the fact that it doesn't sit right up against those corners...

I did think this was going to be cool and I almost bought one but now I think I want to go with the vortex generator look of the MR for our cars... :-)

-Nigel
theicewall 07-09-2006 11:44 AM

I dont like the vortex generator look for our cars because the fins are too big and the piece is too long front to back. I have wanted to hold the actual MR one which is smaller up to the subaru and see how close it is... because if its close perhaps it could be modded a bit to have it fit the subaru and look better than the chargespeed one. It has that anntena in the middle too.

Very true. Not to mention Billy boi has one, he already had to send it back for fading and dis-coloring! 2-months of use, comon now!

i couldn't find any urethane but found alot of polyurethane bottles? is that what i'm supposed to be looking for? its specifically for windows/sliding windows.

-Nigel
all good nigel..to each his own..IMHO it definitely looks way better in person, but i do see your point. i thought the same thing when i first fitted it up, but now it doesn't bother me so much. the contours of the fin go with the roof lines almost perfect when you see it dead on from the side.

but then again maybe i'm biased cuz its my car

i like it because it's lower profile than the vortex generators ( which i hate, regardless of who makes it) and the 06 roof vane thingy....

sjscooby: that should do the trick
ThirSTi 02-21-2007 06:31 PM

Thank you for confirming. I looked at Pep Boys, Kragen, and Home Depot and nothing was exactly "Window urethane", there was polyurethane but it was for house stuff so I wasn't so sure, and there was window sealer at the auto stores, but I wasn't too keen on that, so I went home and did some google-ing. I'll post pics of the install once I get this stuff in and the caulking gun thing for it.
NewShockerGuy 02-22-2007 04:12 AM

I broke down and got one as well!...lol

So I will remove my previous comment from months ago...hahah

I plan on installing it in Spring once it's not SOOO cold, probably have my father help me out since everyone recommends a 2 man job!

On the Urathane.. is there a particular brand, color..etc?

Just to clarify on the instructions you do not put the urathane on the bottome of the spoiler then put it on the windshield, rather, you get the left side of the spoiler under the weather stripping and then put a bead down and slide it into the bead of urathane?

Thanks,
-Nigel

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing too. Am I putting the urethane in the beveled part of the underside of the spoiler or a line of it on the window where I think the spoiler will be heh.
ThirSTi 02-23-2007 08:49 PM

Also, I've noticed that people are installing the spoiler ON TOP of the rubber weather stripping running horizontally above the rear window. Is that really the right way? I think I may install mine directly below that because the rubber stripping is raised above the window, not flush of course....
The_Black_WRX 02-24-2007 11:13 AM

i put mine on with about 1/4 inch overlapping the rubber strip
it looks like it flows better that way

Using's Jason's pic:

After reading the directions and looking at this pic I have a question..

Do you have to lift up the window modling to slide this in? See the pics on the edges how the plastic seal is lifted... when I test fitted mine I didn't life it up rather than just put it directly again the window molding...

It kinda looks better to me rather than see lifted up edges?

Any pros or cons to doing it this way rather than the above picture seeing how it's lifted?

ThirSTi:
How was the 3m stuff you ordered? I am about to get it if it worked for ya.

Thanks,

I am installing mine in a week once I get the urathane... I am removing that top weather stripping... I've checked with serveral members that have done that it it gives a much cleaner install. Plus I doubl checked to see if there would be any leaks from removing it and there are none.
