USGP coming up!

USGP is coming up very soon, and i will be attending. this the first time i have gone to the USGP and am wondering if i can get some advice and pointers from some veterans as i have no idea what i will be doing for everyday except sunday. i would like to go to qualifing and practice, how do i go about doing that? also, i AM 21 and looking to have a good time at night. so any good bars or whatever in indy would be helpful too. thanks guys.

Check out Fastimes Indoor Kart track... it's a great time! :p

Here's another vote for Fastimes if you make it up to the north side of town. Also, be sure to check out the Speedway Museum while you're at the track. Admission is only $3 and they have a lot of vehicles on exihibit including a bunch of Indy 500 winner cars but also automobiles from F1, Le Mans, NASCAR, and a group of antique road cars as well.
Also, there is usually something going on downtown in conjunction with the F1 weekend in the evening. I think one year the Ferrari club had a car show on Monument Circle and there have been other similar events around that area downtown. We also have a great AAA baseball stadium right next to the RCA Dome which is within walking distance of the Circle if you're into baseball and they're home that weekend.
I hope this helps and that you have a good time while you're here.

I'm going for Sat practice and qualifying (only). Looking forward to the scream of the v8 and the BMWs and Porshe Supercups. Any suggestions on where to watch? I'll have the whole family.

Not sure what kind of kart it is. It's a single gear and it reaches 40MPH+ pretty quickly. Also, the track is quite slick so you get to induce a lot of oversteer if you wish.
Here is their website: http://www.fastimesindoorkarting.com
I've been twice and it's so much fun. It's addicting, though, so be prepared to shell out about $20/session. :p

I'm driving to Indy on Saturday morning. ;)

Go to St. Elmo's (steak) or Mikado (sushi) for dinner. Both (expensive) driver hangouts. In past years, I've managed to see the Andretti's, Bernie, Michael, Taku, Norberg, Nick Heidfeld among others at these places.
The walkabout on Thursday is a great time. I usually just run my arse off to stand in front of McLaren for 4 hours - but it's always fun. Last year I even scored some decals off of Kimi's winning car from the Canadian GP that were being changed out for the US "race." Most afternoons after practice and quali, I aimlessly stand at the back gates for hours hoping to get Kimi's autograph. Thanks to a really nice guy from Finnish TV who took my poster back to Kimi, I got a signature.... *banana*
And - since I haven't seen him pimp it yet - be sure to check out artkevin's fantastic show at the Hyatt. His paintings and drawings are just wonderful, and worth a stop.
I'm coming in Wednesday night and going back on Monday afternoon... Hope to meet some NASIOCers!

Oh, is artkevin doing the art show again? I really wanted to check it out last year, but I didn't go to the USGP (thankfully :p).
I guess I didn't realize how difficult it was to see some drivers without waiting for hours on end. I really doubt the gf will be up for any of that. Plus we're being cheapskates and only staying for one night at the hotel on Saturday night. I doubt we could make it from WV to IN on Saturday to catch qualifying, but who knows.
I'm really surprised there isn't a better "guide" to the USGP online anywhere.

Matt - There are autograph sessions - usually with the "lesser" drivers, but even then - you have to pick the one you REALLY want, and then hope that you are in line early enough to actually make it to them before they leave....
I forget what day that usually happens though...
Who knows - maybe they'll be nicer this year based on how bad the US fans got screwed last year...

Yup, still got the show going on. Thanks JoD.
The secert to meeting drivers from what I have seen is to hang out in downtown hotels. Since I have to be at the Hyatt for meet and greets for hours on end I have met a crap ton of them just hanging out. My favorite story was watching Trulli walk dead smack into a "out" door just weeks after he dominated Monaco. Made me laugh a little inside.
Edit:
Look for these around the city.

I will be around as much as possible and since I am staying in downtown for the 1st time this year I will be there on Saturday for sure. The only scheduled times are Friday 4-6 and Sunday 5-7. But again, anytime I am not at the track/eating/at a party/sleeping I will be there. I found out last year that my stuff doesn't sell for chit when I am not there.

Just do one of those "Hey, whats that over there?" things. That usually works just fine.

I like sitting in the infield, you get to see a fair amount of track and also see the cars at low speed. The amazing sound of hte cars changing gears down the back straight is cool too. This is the first year I'm not staying in the turn 9-10 area though.

Has anyone here had seats in Stand C before? What's it like?

For practice on Friday and Qualifying on Saturday, I would try to get seats in the 4th turn of the 500 track, or turn 1 for F1. You can see a lot sitting there and it's a good time. You can see the straight and the whole complex of turns right off the straight. If you're looking for a good time in Indy, and you mentioned you're 21, downtown or Broad Ripple are your best bets. If you're downtown and looking to drink/party, go to the Slippery Noodle, lots of live music or Howl at the Moon. It's a piano bar, which doesn't sound like much, but is a great time. If you're staying on the northside of Indy, Broad Ripple is where you should go. It's close to the Butler University campus, and it's packed every night. There are some great bars there too, depending on your tastes. There is a great Brew Pub right off the main street in Broad Ripple called, Broad Ripple Brew Pub. Their Wheat and Stout beers are excellent, so if you get a chance, definitely try it out. Whoever mentioned walking around downtown, Indy's downtown is not really that big, but there are some interesting things, the Monument Circle, Circle Center Mall and a few other things. Someone mentioned the Indians baseball stadium. It is beautiful and looks out towards downtown. The park on the Canal is a good place as well. If you're downtown and want to go to a good German Beer Garden, get a cab and go to the Rathskeller. It's a really good place with some really good beers. I live about 20 minutes from downtown and 5 from Broad Ripple, so if anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best. Hopefully I'll see some other WRXers/Subies at the race.

You'd probably enjoy Broad Ripple more than downtown bars. Downtown bars are great, don't get me wrong, but Broad Ripple has a lot of college aged women.

My story of bumping into celebrity is in Indianapolis Mall. It was after Qualifying, I was very tired, needed some shopping done. So I walk down the stairs and someone passes by me. Two guys actually. One of them was Fernando Alonso. Took me few seconds to realise what just happened :) You don't just causually see F1 pilots in US :)

A few of my friends ran into Panis at Old Navy. They helped him find jeans that fit. He had no idea how American sizes worked. I guess he was super nice guy and was very thankful
On the other hand we ran onto JPM drunk at Ruths Chris. He was to cool to talk to anybody.

Hey, does anyone know of anywhere near (or in) the track where I'll be able to catch the World Cup matches? Ideally IN the track, then I can sate both urges simultaneously.
Thanks,

Wireless PDA running VLC, hijack a local accesspoint and connect to a video stream on a remote machine with a capture card. Yes I need my fix too.
