I had no idea an '05 was coming out...
That's interesting. I can only guess that Kumho trumped the Hoosier monopoly and Hoosier has to react quickly with a new offering.

Yep there are national autocross guys testing these on a variety of cars right now. Supposedly they will be available as early as mid-April. The V710s in the sizes that I want to run are still $160 less per set than the Hoosiers. Woulda thought competition would bring the price down some...

Wow, I had no idea they were going to come out this quickly. How long until they are approved for use in auto-x? They obviously have the size requirements down.

They specifically rounded the outer portion of the tire so stock type cars with limited camber would get more longevity out of them. Or so says some people on sccaforums. I think the Mini was the main car they were talking about, those guys would get like 2 autocrosses out of a set of A3S04s.

Same with the WRX.. and that's a big reason why there were no WRXs in DS at Nationals last year.

They were rotating them between runs on a double driven mini at one point here in Houston...

It's probably going to be tough to compare the S05s to the V710s until the ambient temps come up. However, initial feedback on the S05 has been positive. Hoosier commited to bringing a competitive tire to the market when they got trumped in Topeka. Nobody knows how long they will last at this point, whereas everyone seems to be impressed with the life of the V710s. I have heard a number of people say that their V710s were "off" from number of heat cycles well before they ran out of tread.
I'm starting the season on the V710s. We will need our next set of tires in mid-April, so these will certainly be under consideration provided that feedback remains positive. I figure it's best to find out which tire is best early rather than late, especially given that setup will be specific to each tire (Hoosier = more camber).

I talked to Hoosier Tom this afternoon. The SO5 is a compound change from the SO4, not an entirely new construction (as the SO3 was). The tire appears to be very comparable to the Kumho V710 in testing of RWD platforms. Limited testing has been done on FWD cars.
It is also reasonable to assume that the SO5 will require similar camber and pressure settings to the SO4 due to the same construction. That is really all that is known right now.

Jeff/Hoosier tried to get me a set of 245/40/17 S05's for this weekends San Diego National Tour event ... because there were no other 245/40/17 R compounds available ... Hoosier/TireRack sold out and that size isn't available from Kuhmo. But of course ... management nixed the idea because the tire has to be available to all.
Jeff then tracked down a set of 245/40/17 S04's at the Mid Atlantic warehouse. "Hoosier Tom" is 2 day Fedexing them to me.
Tom said that testing with heavy, high horsepower, rear wheel drive cars, ie. Vettes ... showed that the S05 achieved PARITY with the 710 ... did not beat it. But at least it will be available, starting in April, in useful, to me, sizes.

I'd say proabably a 7.5" rim. Doesn't mean you can't go smaller. But it also doesn't mean the tire is going to work all that well.

Just took my 245/40/17 S04's to be mounted ... they are so oversized! ... but they "turn in" to allow a smaller rim then you would think you would need ... I'm putting them on 8.5" Rota Slipstreams ...

My 245/40/17 Hoosiers are the same size as "regular" 275/40/17 tires. They are almost exactly the same size as my friend's Nitto 275/40/17 Z-06 front tires.
Going out to the WRX now to see if they will actually fit ... I've got spacers standing by ...

We'll be in the same boat then. I'm working on stuffing 225 710's. They are 10" wide. :eek:

He could probably still ask Vilven, the 245/35s aren't listed yet anywhere else and he had a dozen, he's got some of the "rare" V710 sizes.

Has nothing to do with bravery ... although some people on this forum would claim I'm stupid instead of brave! LOL ... and they're probably right ... driving a WRX in SM! ... pretty stupid. But ... they forget that some of us just want to have fun.
The 245/40 Hoosiers fit fine ... with 5 mm spacers in the rear ... and 15 mm spacers up front. Full range of steering movement ... and I'm now 10 mm up on the Sedan folk up front. :-)
btw. H&R says that with modern bearings ... there is no need to worry about extra wear/stress due to using their spacers. Only the old fashion bearings ... that needed a bit of play ... would be stressed out. The super strict german TUV auto regulatory department wouldn't allow this german company to market these spacers if they did create a potential hazard.
H&R says that spacers mathematically lower the roll center of the car ... thus creating "enhanced" handling ...
Off to San Diego tomorrow at 4:45 AM ... :-(
