Wagon roof rail removal hits 9-2x snag

Looking to replace roof rails with moldings from the 9-2x, but have run into an problem with my Saab Dealership Parts Dep't.
After taking way too long to explain to the confused Part Guy why someone with a Subaru would be at a Saab Parts Dep't ( ), I finally learned that Saab dealers can only order 9-2x parts with a Saab VIN. But it seems they cannot yet access 9-2x VIN's with their parts lookup software. :furious:
Any chance anyone here knows the Saab equivalent part numbers for the Canadian roof rail moldings? Trying to see if it would save money to order from my friendly hometown dealer...
TIA

I can post them tomorrow when I'm back at my place if you don't get them by then. I just ordered them on Monday from my Saab dealer, just need to look on the written order form.
I posted a thread about it, but no one cared. Oh well.

he's trying to put on saab removable roof rails on his subaru wagon hence he needs the saab rails and moldings. reread the part saying he has a subaru in his post. plus if he had a saab, he'd have the vin number.

Silly noob....First, he does own a Subaru, check the post. Second, the Saab rails/moldings are different from the Subaru ones. As are most of the parts in that car. Which means that you can't just go to a Subaru dealership and get Saab parts for it. At this exact moment, I'm standing in a Subaru parts department because I work there. I'll go look on the shelves for our stockpile of Saab parts you're claiming we have....Hmmm, no Saab parts. AT ALL. Let me call the Saab store in my dealerchain....They don't have any Subaru parts there. If we go with your thinking, you should be beaten for thinking you can buy Saab parts at a Subaru store
And Scaed, if you need any further help PM me, I'll call the guys at my Saab store and get you hooked up :)

So is it correct that Saab-badged WRX and TS have, in place of rails bolted through the roof, the mounting brackets hidden under the moldings - same as Impreza sedans? If so, the gen.2 sedan people may finally know where to get the elusive EDM rack.
| LimeyWRX | 07-31-2004 09:20 PM |
I bought my rail moldings from my local dealer. The part numbers were canadian and they had no problem getting them in three days for around $60 each. Why get the saab ones if you have to drill your roof out?

Well I should be getting my roof moulding tomorrow and after my exams I'll be removing the rails. I'll let you guys know how it all goes together.
As far as drilling the roof out, it should be a direct replacement from the already drilled out mouldings. I didn't want to just get plugs for it, that would look like crap. Also the optional Saab roof rails don't require drilling into the new moulding. It's a Yakima part that kinna (don't know exactly where though since I didn't get that) clips on and it's made specifically for the Impreza estate. The Saab parts guy let me take a look, says there right on the hardware box, "Impreza Estate". So I would guess they're more of the same then different Blackfeet.

I'd have to take a look at them more closely to see...I just sold the Subaru moldings to a guy here at the dealership who was taking his rails out. I've only seen a 9-2X in person once, and wasn't paying much attention to the roof rails. Good luck with the swap!
| Desolate One | 08-01-2004 10:54 PM |
I got to take a close look at it while at the dealer. The only real difference is the front and rear ends. Everything else is identical; in fact it comes from the same factory, thus my idea to purchase the roof mouldings from the local Saab dealer. It's closer and I don't have to pay shipping. =)
I'll definitely let you guys know how it turns out.

Desolate,
Local Saab dealer charged me $51 each for the moldings. They'll be here Fri. I assume this is about what you paid.
Mike Egan's site listed his Canadian Roof Rails as the same price, FYI (plus shipping?). Here
Thanks again for the heads up and p/n's. :)

No problem. Unfortunately my local Saab dealer didn't call me to let me know the mouldings were in and I didn't have the time to call to find out today. I'll prolly phone them tomorrow from the office to find out wot's going on.
| Desolate One | 08-06-2004 01:55 PM |
No I haven't forgotten about you guys. They have only received one moulding. Hopefully They'll get the other by Monday morning since I have some time for the job then. I'll keep you updated.
| Desolate One | 09-26-2004 08:08 PM |
Okay, they FINALLY came in about 2 weeks ago and I FINALLY got the time to rip the car apart.
LOOKS GREAT! That's right guys, the 9-2X mouldings are the right parts. Those part numbers for you guys again are:
32009137
32009136
One thing to take care of are the clips holding in the existing moulding. You don't want to break those since they are VERY unique. I was just able to slide off the middle sections. The front I carefullt used a 90* pick to slide them off of the holder (mushroom looking thingie, yes that's a technical term) and pop out the T-clip or wotever from the front.

I want pictures!!! :D So the Saab ones are removable? Will Subaru / Yakima roof racks still work with them?

| Desolate One | 09-26-2004 09:27 PM |
Well the 9-2X doesn't come with rails, you have to purchase the Yakima ones as an option. This way if I ever decide to take up a sport that requires roof rails I can pick those up for $70. Even says it on the hardware box "Impreza Estate". It'll work. :)
I'll get some pics up soon. It's dark out now so I doubt I'll get a good shot.

Cool, I have a set of Impreza low profile Q-towers on mine for my snowboard, bike and kayak racks. So I think I'll stick with what I've got now.
I still wanna see how it came out!

So what is the difference between the Saab channel cover and the Subaru one? Looking at the link above, and pictures of the 9-2x, they look pretty similar... is it just the mounting hardware?
| Quack | 09-26-2004 09:59 PM |
TTIWWOP of the SAAB parts...
| avk | 09-26-2004 11:11 PM |
Why does a Yakima box read "Impreza estate"? Yakima is not sold in Europe. How do those bars attach to the roof?
| Desolate One | 09-26-2004 11:13 PM |
Everything's the same. The 9-2X comes from the same factory in Japan.

So what's the advantage of the SAAB part over the Subaru one? Is it a pricing issue?

The Saab dealer is a few blocks away from my place, so I didn't have to pay shipping as I would have if I ordered them myself. Plus I don't know of anyone that's done it with the "Saab" parts and thought it would be useful information for the WRX community. Looks like I was wrong. Oh well, at least I'm happy with the results.
dmatthew- Someone was crying over seeing pics so I had to run out right then to take one.

So does the yakama rack attach differently? i ahve the qtowers, but would love something that used that factory bracket. as it would be stronger then the q towers.

Desolate! thanks for sharing the photos. MY Saab mouldings are backordered also! (actually just one, just like yours hmmm) not sure how long it will take, I'm a gonna call them tonite. glad to see it worked out.
on a side not you can mount a roof rack to your wagon (the 92-x in the dealer had one). It clips into the door openings like a sedan rack would. but i dont think that will work with my side wind visors :(

how hard is the install and how do you do the install? does the headliner need to be removed inside the car?
| Desolate One | 09-27-2004 03:55 PM |
elsanto- I agree with you, I think the side visors would interfere.
daphunkei12- Not difficult at all, just time consuming! Yes, all the pillar interior pieces as well as the headliner needs to be removed to access the bolts for the rail. The holes also need to be plugged up as wll.

Thanks for making this clear. So the 9-2 rack does not in fact "use factory mounting locations" like the catalog says. But then there's no need to bolt the "Canadian" anchors through the holes left by the rails.

If you can get practically the same thing for thousands less..... it only makes sense.
Even without the pricing incentives.... it's still the same thing.

Why do so many people buy the wagon and then remove the rails, thus reducing how functional the wagon can be?

Anybody know if the Saabaru comes with plugs for the 8 holes under the roof rack attachment points that will leak water through if not sealed? I'm swapping mouldings and roof rail with a Saabaru, but don't know if I still need to buy the rubber plugs from Home Depot.
