What are the best auto-x street tires for STi?

Hi,
I'm contemplating getting the Rota Torques (8" wide :D) with 245/40/17 Kuhmo MXs or 245/45/17 Azenis.
What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance,
Masuo

either of those tires will be great.
which one would do best would probably depend on the temperature.
hot days - kumho mx
cold days - azenis

the 245/45 is a bit tall and might rub.
| jmott | 04-13-2004 05:13 PM |
good point, the gearing might be helpful on an STI though.

There's also the BF Goodrich G-Force T/A KD. They cost a little more than the other two options, but seem to have no real drawbacks other than price. You can get them for a fairly good price at Costco, but they will still cost $100-$200 more per set than the MXs or Azenis.

225 Azenis still seem to be the choice of many STXers, dunno what any STU people may be planning. I'll be on either 245 Ecsta MX's for STX.

Lies!!!!! Shouldnt rub on stock wheels on torques you would have to roll the rear fender.

They have another draw back, they are slower then azenis in the cold and rain. Cant be beat in the hot and dry though.

having seen these personally on a STi with Tein Flex's..Right rear rubbed on compression....no biggie...1/4 in up on the strut fixed that....245/45/17 fit with NO problem on a Stock Suspended STi...if you have Tein Flex's or someother Adjustable suspension...you will gett rub in the front at FULL slamed Camber....on the innerliner....thats with 3.3 degrees neg on camber plates.......:)
Car is sick...Mike King Drove this Particular car and set FTD with it...
Hope that answers your question..oh. yeah...
Stock STi rims with the 245's...;)'

It can rub without having the camber slammed all the way in, but that can be solved with either stiff ass springs or raising the car a bit.

I've seen the car you mentioned with the 245 Azenis on the stock STI wheels...it looked pretty mean. :D

I run 245/45/17s VR700's on my STi... no rub.

isn't that the tire orion had when I used to beat him regularly with my azenis?

Just trying to start stuff. He did win the championship though, right? Although I did run in his car and got first which prevented you from getting maximum points, but oh well.
I think he had KDWs, not KDs.

Sully's right, those were 215-50-16 KDW's. Awesome in the rain, you hardly dropped off, but at maybe 80% of Azenis grip in the dry, it had better rain EVERY event.
Funny thing is at the rate I was closing in on you, one more event we should have been even. Go back and look at the gap from Nov 02 - April 03.;)

tire rack is dragging its feet at selling me 235/45-17s for use on 17 x 8.5 SSR comps, et 48.
Anyone have real data on whether these will fit on an otherwise completely stock STi?
I'm running ESP / STU out of region, AS locally on the oem size.

Should fit fine. Will definetely fit if you roll your rear fenders.
Im running 245/45/17 victos on a 17-7.5 rim with +48 offset on a lowered sti, I had to roll the rears due to the taller tires and lowred car.

ok, cool. I'm hoping no rolling is needed. hell the car is only a two months old ;) I can run 225s if i need to till i get it sorted out.

Is there more than a half inch of clearance between the rim and strut? IOW, the SSRs are the same offset, but an inch wider.

that's a permanent way to never be stock legal again. outside his local events, that won't make a lot of friends...

i ran Yoko AO32R 235/40-17's on a 17x8.5" et45 wheel with no rubbing issues and at the time I had SA Koni's with a 30mm lowering srping that was maybe 5-10% stiffer than stock. No rubbing whatsoever. That won't help the STi gearing for longer courses, but if your events are short and tight it should be pretty reasonable.
| ingrahamm | 04-15-2004 05:33 PM |
good tip, with the one problem being kumho doesn't make an MX in 235/40. that and the problem you already adverted to--STI gearing is already plenty short...

I will check tommorow, dont remember how much room there was.
Why do you want to use 8.5 inch wheels when you are only using 235s? Isnt that a bit of overkill?

Depending on how your local events are you may be able to just use 3rd most of the time if you got shorter tires.

yeah, you could fit 245/40(or 45)-17s on there easy.
