What can I used to get bumper burn off of my paint?

I have tried everything. Wax, soap, quick detail, and my bumper is still blackish with a yellow tint and it's ****ing killing my new paint job. I already am getting a carbon heat shield made for my lip but it's spread to the actual bumper. Not bad or anything, but just enough for me to notice.
Is there anything out there that works wonders? Thanks in advance!

polish it. first use a fine polish to see if it gets most of it off. if not get a heavier polish. and if that dosent work you wet sand it then fine polish it after.
sonus from autopia.org has several different staged polishes.

Are you guys running catless?
| D Money | 11-22-2006 04:32 PM |
You know it, catless, ewg, nasty turbo, bla bla bla.
I am going to try those polish's, any idea where I can get them?
No, I just think it discolored the paint. It didn't burn it off or nothing like that.

If your paint is black and yellowish looking. The yellow tint is coming from the heat, heating up the clear-coat. You wont be able to get rid of the yellow tint most likely. Im an automotive painter, and there is basically no way of getting rid of a tint like that on the clear-coat. Your best bet would be to take it to the dealer. Each dealer has their own touch-up company that does all of their bumper jobs and such. Shouldnt cost you more than $125 at the very most. That is just what we charge per spot repair, but I work at a Benz dealer. If you want to really try to get it off. Go to the auto store and pick up some 1200grit and 2000 grit sand paper. Wet sand it very softly, not aggresive in circles. Until the haze goes away. Then grab some rubbing compound (3M) and hand rub it. And see what it does, if you have any ?S just hit me up...

I can't take it to a dealer, it's custom paint. lol
I am going to take it back to the body shop, have it re-painted, and then an exhaust shield made in c/f to help stop it.
I am actually going to try the mr. clean magic eraser, does it actually work? Is there any other things I can try?

I doubt the magic eraser or simple green or any of the sort is going to work. The clear is dis-colored...You cant just erase the dis-coloration off the bumper from your exhaust heat. I wasnt aware that it was a custom job. If thats the case, just take it back and they can spot in the color. Its not hard at all. Dont waste your money on all that other stuff. Just get it repainted and get a shield made. Save you alot of time...

magic eraser man, it took the carbon right off my bumper...now if its burnt and ":browned" that is a different story, you might need a repaint:furious:

I once had a white car and experienced this,i used a polish made by prestone ,it comes in a rectangular, yellow, metal can.i even used kerosene a few times and it worked magic.

Repaint...Repaint...Repaint...Your tri-coat white is a pain in the arse to blend, but since its at the bottom of the bumper you will have soooooo much room to blend out the color and the tri-coat. Your bumper will look good as new. And would kerosene be such a good idea? Cause I know my car lets off some nice fireballs, and im not sure if I would want kerosene anywhere near my exhaust when im letting loose a 12" fireball. But thats just me, :)...Good luck with the bumper,...
| D Money | 11-24-2006 05:36 PM |
Well it's not so much the bumper, just the lip. I am going to have it repainted and then add on the carbon fiber exhaust shield.

This is a pic of my car, 3 days after I got it back. I wash the car almost daily, so I usually don't let it get bad. Can you see the little mark I am referring to?

Hmmm. I can see the spot your talking about. It definetley looks like the clear-coat itself has been burned... From the look of your bumper it looks like it is just one solid bumper? Or is it a "bumper" and "a rear lip"? If that makes sense. Since your color is a tri-coat, im 100% positive that they will have to put base coat on your whole bumper on the bottom, probably 2 coats. Then they will take the tri-coat pearl and put down 2-3 to match. They will just blend it out...Even though the spot is small, you would want them to take the color and tri-coat out as far as possible that way you dont get a "halo" look where the repaired it. If that happens, kick them in the nuts and tell them to re-do it! Hope I was some help, if not. you can kick me in the nuts,...
| D Money | 11-25-2006 01:09 AM |
thanks for everything. I understand what your saying, this is the 2nd time this car has been painted and my other car had a 3 stage kandy color, so im in and out of the body shop alot. I am pretty sure he is going to have to blend into the bumper, since the lip itself has already been damaged.
| dblurx4 | 11-25-2006 01:28 AM |
Sure no problem...I take care of my buddies cars all the time. They dont even get upset anymore when they get a scratch, or a dent or something stupid. Because they know I will fix it... Ive sprayed alot of cars for SEMA since 2004, and also had a few choppers and hot rods in EasyRiders and Street Rodder magazine. And so on and so on. If your ever drivin through AZ and need something done, just PM me and I will get you fixed up.

Get a exhaust with a longer tip. IE Greddy Evo2
| sjs0433 | 11-25-2006 05:03 PM |
+1 for maybe looking into a different exhaust. I've noticed that the people that have the n1 styles exhausts have much more problems with bumper burn. I had it some when I had my hks but luckily my car being blue its a little hard to see and has actually come off some with intense scrubbing. I know have the borla xr-1 and haven't had any problems with it at all as far as I can tell. I've noticed that the exhausts like the borla and cobb that have that rolled tip seem to pick up the soot on the exhaust tip moreso than on the bumper.
hard choice b/c I think the exhaust you've got looks perfect on your car and I can't see the borla or cobb looking right on your car.

should put a thicker layer of wax there so it would be like an extra coat which woulda made it easier to get off . did someone say that already ? cause i didnt read it . welll ................. it looks cooler D ! keep the yellow tint !
| clutchcargo | 11-25-2006 06:46 PM |
Don't get it repainted!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNTIL you've tried the claybar.
I have a white STi, catless, fujitsubo cat-back, and every few months I have to claybar my rear-bar and rewax. No car wash, no microfibre mit, no amount of rubbing would get it off.
If you don't have a claybar for general cleaning/detailing then you're missing out.

I just wanted to chime in here real fast, and I will be damned if the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser didn't work like magic on my GF WRX Wagon! To whoever mentioned it in this post, thank you very much. It doesn't damage the clear at all, and took all of the discoloration off.

well no, lol.
It took off all the black and what not, but that little yellow part, maybe 3 inches long is still there on the lip. What happened was my hks carbon ti was movin to the side, even with the kartboy hangers, so I put a clamp on the hanger and now it doesn't move to the side any longer. After I get the lip repainted, it will no longer burn because the exhaust isn't clost to it not to mention I will have that c/f piece on it.

NICE! I swear Mr. Clean Eraser gets EVERYTHING out! I play pool and constantly get blue chalk residue all over my shaft and the eraser gets it off with no priblem where most players would actually sand off a thin layer of the wood just to clean and smooth it out. Have you thought about painting the middle part matte gray so that you can paint the indentation of the muffler as well? Just an idea.
