What the heck is that flap above the mirror for?
Ok.. this has been bugging me since I got the car. There is this plastic thing right above the mirror that has hinges on it and moves back and forth. What is the purpose in this? I cannot figure it out for the life of me.

a little sun visor
It is a little sun visor to block the sunlight (or I guess any distracting light for that matter) that may shine in your face from around the mirror (in between the actual sunvisors).

That's the yin flap.
Its counterpart, the rubber yang flaps, are under your car attached to the plastic faux skidplate. Use them wisely to maintain harmony in your car.:p

I do believe it's there to assist in guiding the window as it seats closed with the car frame. Common among cars like ours which utilize windows without a surrounding frame.
I like the LCD idea!

i unscrewed mine, flipped it around and screwed it back in. it actually works now.
p.s. i'm short and i sit kinda low, so this mod works. my friend's a bit taller, so in his car he can use it normal style. (he had to adjust his mirror a bit...just moved it up and down a bit until it was in a good spot.

you guys are funnny.... the visor thing about the mirror is for the rear passengers.... sometimes the sun will get thru through the gap between the mirror and the roof. It works well.

Is it just me or are half the people in this thread talking about different things????
Some people appear to be talking about the black "tint' that is on the windshield.
Some people appear to be talking about the actual rearview mirror which has a black plastic knob which tilts the mirror so people behind you don't blind you.

Oh, I should have read the original post more carefully, now I feel like a real d**k. I don't seem to have such a hinged tab above my mirror :( , maybe a feature unique to the GDA crowd.
Thats kinda what I thought.... but that doesnt work worth ****! I have the auto dim mirror maybe it fits better or works better with the normal mirror...
You mirror should still be able to be moved up or down (physically) by about an inch.
If you move the mirror up a little more, and the visor is down, it'll work fine. (Also your sun visors need to be down to to get full coverage.)

(doesn't anyone read the manual any more?)

You can easily add a velcro lcd clock to it if you don't have your stock clock anymore because of gauges.

I took the useless visor-let out and mounted my V1 there. Much better use of the space. :)
| UDPride | 03-25-2002 11:13 PM |
Dr Ken, I think youre referring to sashless windows. I for one, hate them. The seals arent nearly as good as sashed windows and deteriorate much quicker and have a higher propensity to leak. You're pretty much at the mercy of the rubber which prob. isnt a good thing long-term. I have them on my GS-R, had them on a Supra, and know Acura still builds the NS-X with sashless windows. Most do it to keep the lines of the car smooth and true, but theres no mistaking the vault-like seal of a sashed window/door of something of, say, a Lexus or Mercedes where you are overlapping several variables and using the door frame itself to help establish the seal. I also dont like my window glass flopping around in a sashless setting when the door is open. Much easier to break by some dimwit whos careless. At least they are easier to clean.

to clarify...
1. There is the visor flap above the rear-view mirror that blocks out the sun for passengers and driver... (you can move the mirror up to close the gap between the flap and the mirror.)
2. The knob on the bottom side of the non-dimming mirror that lets you tilt it to reduce glare from vehicles behind you...

I know '05+ STi's don't have a useless flap and have some tint up there to keep the sun light out instead. I believe it's the same with '05 WRX's as well.

raise your mirror up a bit so that it better fills the gap (the mirror mount has a ball joint at the mirror, and at the glass - might as well use them) - the way I have mine adjusted, it works just fine.

oh wow, this thread started 4.5 years ago!!

It seems that there is two flows of logic in this treade:
Those with the center visor and its issues with the mirror, and the 05+ group that does not have it installed and are getting it confused with something else.
The center "tint" is as useful as a pair of check sunglass while trying to use an arc welder.
I need something solid in the center ...(I know, that's what she said last night   )
So, has anyone tried to install the center visor from a MY02 to a MY05+.
Or should I just get some cardboard and ducktape and go little rascels on the bitch.

it isnt for blocking the sun for passengers etc.
its for night driving. you can have the map lights on, pull the visor down and it blocks those map lights from shining into the rear view mirror.
then you can still clearly see the headlights from the cars behind you ..

yeap, my 05 wrx had the tint stuff up there instead of the flap, which is just as useless. had to have my windshield replaced with a non-oem piece (USA made PPG brand) which doesn't have the tint above the rearview. now my V1 and toll transponder live there.

Well since this thread was drudged up, at least someone actually corrected everyone else on here. The flap is for stopping glare from your map lights.

So if that is what it is for why did they only put tint on the '05 and up WRX's? That tint on the windshield sure doesn't block the map light. I think it has a dual purpose.
