Silver04RS, do they let anyone just drive up to the top? (I'm moving to Colorado Springs in May, I'd like to drive up there.. sanely, not hillclimb style :) )
fireball_jones 01-09-2005 11:14 AM

I believe they do, although conditions close the road sometimes. There's also a train to the top. It's like the Western, much taller version of Mt. Washington.
Bonzo 01-09-2005 11:15 AM

Yes they let anyone.

To say it's awesome is a gross understatement. It's breathtaking, literally. It's also a little scary. I give big props to anyone that races up that hill in anger.

fwiw You start the drive up at 8,000 feet above sea level. Tops out at (iirc) 14,110 feet above.
Filanwizard 01-09-2005 11:57 AM

wow 14k, i could see that on that a Turbo would help tons over natural.

Oh!! Your the guy with the caged RS!! I saw you car in the Picnic Grounds last year. Pretty tight. A lot of people were giving complements.

Yeah dude, if you got some vacation days at the end of June, do yourself a favor and come out and experience one of the worlds premier, storied sporting events.
jffWRX 01-09-2005 12:20 PM

Pike's Peak... wonderful to spectate...
I took my wife out this past June to spectate the race. It was really great. Fortuneatly, we spectated at around 11,000 ft. on race day so we saw the entire event ( a lunch break snow / sleet / ice storm cancelled the event all the way to the top... it was necessary to send snow plows up at the end of the day to get the folks who were all the way at the top and the morning competitors down... ). I'd go again. This country of ours out there is beautiful...

pikes peak is definately a good ride to the top...and be sure to point and laugh at all the people who over heat there brakes on the way back down...

Was it last year or the year before when SCCA Rally ran for the first time?
mike270 01-09-2005 02:07 PM

SCCA ran it the year before last as well as last year.

Rally America is going to be there this year. I can't wait to compete in it this year as a codriver. It will be my first time racing up the mountain. I can't wait for it.
Subie Gal 01-09-2005 03:22 PM

it's a scary ride... but fun as 'ell :D

Bring your tread mill with you. HAHA. I did some hiking at 10k feet before, you suck wind just taking a dump.
cooleyjb 01-09-2005 07:12 PM

The only thing that sucks about the drive up is all the DARN RV's and such. The ones driven by inconsiderate drivers are downright scary at points and even the ones that are driven by good drivers still take up the majority of the road in places.

Definitely cool place though. I haven't been there in a while.

I *tried* to drive it with my wife a few years back. I was scared and she was petrified. I actually had to turn around and head back because she couldn't handle it. The final straw was when we rounded a turn and were able to see clouds flying passed up ahead. Narrow pebble roads without guardrails.....Not for me..I'm a lowlander. Drove down in first gear with the ebrake on and that was still too fast. Fortunately, they have a brake check station so we had to pull over with the other 100 or so people who failed the brake check.
Narrow pebble roads without guardrails.....
Have to disagree there. The roads at Pikes Peak are W I D E , compared to most of the roads we run in the series.

But it's pretty, and I'm looking forward to running it! I missed in in 2004.

And if you think PP roads are scary narrow with RV's and such, try sharing Mt. Washington with 15 passenger vans whose drivers tend to drive like they're IN the hillclimb.

Interesting side note:
When the late Carl Merril (a Mt. Washington Hillclimb regular) launched his Escort Corworth off one of the corners during his first visit to PP he woke up in the back of a Medi-Vac (not a good thing, especially since he was claustrophobic). When they asked the standard "do you know where you are" question he replied: "Sure, Mt. Washington!"

I have to remember and try and go to it this year. I'll take the long, scenic route up to it.
Narrow pebble roads without guardrails.....
That road is nice and wide. Narrow and scarry is a gravel road with barely enough width for one car on a two way road. If you run into a car coming uphill, you have to go in reverse up the road. Mountain roads are FUN! :)
pikes peak is definately a good ride to the top...and be sure to point and laugh at all the people who over heat there brakes on the way back down...
Is it that bad? I mean, I have a stock TS wagon. Am I going to die on my way down? Do I have to stop every half mile to let them cool down?
Bonzo 01-09-2005 11:14 PM

It is wide but feels narrow esp near the top.

Like others have said they check brake temp part way down. Drive smart and you won't have a problem. I was in a loaded dualy pickup and was waived thru on the way down at the check station. They were cool.

As for power robbing HP at altitude. I pulled over part way up in the duallie with a 454ci chevy under da hood. I was on gravel, puched it to the floor and it just drove away. No tire spin :o
Filanwizard 01-09-2005 11:25 PM

if you have a manual you can do like the big trucks and run a lower gear to keep you slow without extended brake usage.
FlooredSubaru 01-10-2005 12:04 AM

This is will be my first year racing up the moutain.

It would be great to see as many as you out there.

I will need people to help push the car past the half way point.

I dont know how the 2.5L n/a will do but we will see.

Haha! You and ChrisL are nuts!! :) I'll just stick to low, flat, lands. I couldn't imagine hitting those roads at race speeds.

View from the top from our trip up last year:

The whole drive up I kept thinking about Ari going up the hill one-handed while blocking the sun with the other. That's an amazing vid....

As far as brakes go, I had Carbotech Bobcats and the Carbotech slotted rotors on that wagon. At the checkpoint on the way down, the guy took the temps twice, shook his head and waved me thru. The guy in front of me had to pull over for 30 minutes, and the guy behind me had to pull over as well.
WRXedUSA 01-10-2005 10:32 AM

Two things.

My stock pads got cooked up there. I upgraded to Axxis Ultimates, and no problems.

The other thing, Any word on extended paving efforts? I read an article that they were to further extend the paving past the picnic grounds and install guardrails???

Does anyone have a link to the effort
"Against Paving teh Peak"?
gargleblaster 01-10-2005 10:46 AM

I don't have the link, but last I heard, they've been mandated to pave 1 mile per year, I assume all the way to the summit. :(
Calamity Jesus 01-10-2005 11:13 AM
if you have a manual you can do like the big trucks and run a lower gear to keep you slow without extended brake usage.
I would hope you're using a lower gear regardless of the tranny you have.
I don't have the link, but last I heard, they've been mandated to pave 1 mile per year, I assume all the way to the summit. :(
Yes, that is the last I heard too. At this rate, the organizers fear the the speeds will become to great, and thus cancelling the annual tradition. Imagine hitting a wet spot, possibly icey at that speed in a corner?

When PPIHC goes away. I'll /myself.
ToddStratton 01-10-2005 02:03 PM

I have to admit I really miss Colorado here...and PPIHC is just one reason. The year before last was great with the Subaru and other factory teams. I'm putting together a DVD from my last trip, just for the heck of it.

If you go, make sure you plan a few days for the practice sessions in the morning. They are free with a ticket to the main event and well worth it. You can pick a different place to watch each day and then go up to Devil's playground for the race. :)

I have this video forever. VHS style! Had it from when my father worked at PSA, or to most Peugeot Motors of America. He worked there from 81-91 here in NJ. We actually had that car and some 205 T16 cars in the warehouse for sometime.

I swear if i ever win the Lottery i am goin to buy one of those 405 T16 PP cars. They are the coolest car ive seen to date. Oh yeah and rediulously loud.

cnstman 01-13-2005 12:28 AM

did not see anyone mention that it is the second oldest motor sport even in the US. (second to the indy 500) if anyone is coming out, the local subaru dealer, heuberger, has a meet every year the friday before the race. last year the esx car was there, and travis pastrana. very cool meet.
Storz 01-13-2005 12:06 PM

In recent years the competition has shifted gears somewhat to more rally inspired cars...ie WRX etc....back in the day they ran, and occasionally still do, crazy one off pikes peak cars like the Suzuki Escudo, if you have a downloading program at all (kazaa, shareaza etc) do a seach or "Climb Dance" its a short film from the 80's that has some really amazing shots of an Audi going up the mountain.
