If you know your helmet size I would go with eBay. You can get some great full face helmets really cheap there, or some open face ones for less then 50.

I would go to a shop first to at least try them on so you get the right size. A motorcycle shop should have some good ones to try on

That's what I did, I got an HJC CL-12 for 170. If I had known my helmet size and the guy wasn't SO helpful, I coulda gotten it a lot cheaper. The guy was so nice and helpful that I decided to support him.

Be sure and obtain a current SCCA approved helmet. Many of the MC helmets do not meet SCCA standards. DOT specs don't get it if you want to get on a track eventually. Might as well buy the best and current stuff, that is if what you put in it is valuable.
| StuBeck | 01-31-2003 11:07 PM |
Just another addition, SCCA approved is that is is SNELL or SNELL Motorcycle approved. II'd get a SNELL 2000 one, you can use it for the next 12 years (they last 15 years past the inspection date) If it is 3x (this is SCARY LARGE) then it has to be SNELL 75 or higher

Sure, those are fine if you have a $50 head.
Personally, I don't recommend M rated helmets. They are fine for autocross, but if you ever get into doing HPDE's and/or lapping days, the M rated helmet probably won't do, and some organizers don't allow them. A helmet is your most important piece of safety equipment, I don't think I would try to save money on this purchase. Get a $250-300 SA2000 rated helmet and it will last you a long time.
Edit: I also see a lot of people buying inexpensive open face helmets. Again, they are fine for autocross, but think ahead...if you want to do high speed events (HPDE's) someday, I personally would NOT get out there with an open face helmet. Full face helmets offer the best protection.

The reason I didn't recommend a higher range helmet is that I thought that you needed a completely higher helmet for anything other then autocross. When I get into track days, etc, I'm going to get a separate helmet anyways, but thanks for the extra info.

Open face vs. full face is a personal decision, but I myself will only use a full face helmet, mainly because I do both autocross and high speed track events. Some autocrossers say a full face helmet isn't as good for autocross because you can't see out of it as well, but I've used a Bell Sport II, Bell M2, and an HJC AC-10...all full face helmets... and I haven't had any problems seeing out of them.
One of my new favorites is the Bell SR-Pro. It has the feel of an open face helmet, but the added protection of a full face helmet...

I don't rally, but most rally racers seem to use open face helmets. My guess is that it's because its easier to communicate with the co-driver???

Thanks for all the information. I need to find out what size I need and then i'll be buying one online. I have been thinking of HPDE and track days so i was looking at a full faced helmet and spendng at least 200-300 on it. I will be getting something SA2000 rated. That bell one does look good.

Rally people typically use open face helmets just in case the intercoms go out and they have to shout out instructions.
I'm planning on getting either a Bieffe or Bell open face for rallyX/rally use.
Anyone know the difference between M2000 and SA2000??? I just always wanted to know.

I bought a brand new snell2000 Bieffe full face for 75 bucks shipped.
Bag that "its fine if you have a 50 dollar head" crap, you are not going to hit your head when autocrossing anyway, and If it can withstand a motorcycle crash, it IS going to provide the protection you need inside a car at autocross speeds. If you are going to be doing 120MPH+ track days, then maybe you you should get a better helmet, but not for autocross.

From the Snell website...
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences between them:
- SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
- SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets may not be street legal);
- SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.

I try to stay out of the cheap helmet debates, but as for my $50 head comment, I can never figure out why people will spend thousands of dollars modifying their cars, but then when they go to buy a helmet, they try to find the cheapest one available. Its your head we're talking about here.
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, M rated helmets are fine for autocross. With the popularity of HPDE's and lapping days though, many autocrossers will eventually attend a track event or three. All I'm saying is to think about whether you may do other types of motorsports events, and then buy a helmet that is good for all of them. Why buy an M rated helmet, then get an SA helmet later? If you think you will ONLY do autocrosses, then sure, go M rated.

Bieffe isnt a "cheap" brand helmet

Lets just look at the differences between SA and M
" SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
- SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets may not be street legal);
- SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
"
1. My car isnt going to catch on fire at an autocross
2. Yeah I want a narrower feild of vision when I am racing..NOT
3.No rollbar in 90% of closed cockpit autocross cars.
M rating is way overkill if you are going to just autocross. ANd MANY autocrossers will NEVER do a track day because of the inherent dangers of wall/other idiot drivers. Some will but many wont.
Thats my only point. It all depends on what you want it for

A slightly tangental aside here...
Don't go to the local store, pick their brains, finger the goods and then buy on-line. If you use his/her expertese buy it from them! Spend your money locally. The few extra bucks are kept in your community and will help support local motorsports enthusiasts.

True the M rating is fine for autocross, the only problem is that SCCA requires an SA rated helmet. The SA is rated for repeated impacts, where as M (motorcycle) are/were rated for a single impact. Now take that into consideration, and guess which one I want protecting my brain!! (SA of course) Proving once again you usually get what you pay for.

One think to keep in mind is that different brands of helmets fit very differently- and for a helmet to work well, it needs to fit snugly. The cheap (~150) SA2000 gforce helmets from racer wholesale don't fit my skull very well, while some other brands fit perfectly- YMMV. The only way to tell is to try them on- patronize your local race shop.
I'm glad I got a SA2000 rated helmet- it saved me from having to buy another when I started rallying. I just wish I would have gotten a better fitting one. If you aren't ever going to do anything other than autocross, you can probably get away with an M2000.

Just to add fuel to this fire, Bieffe is considered a cheap helmet in the motorcycle world. I have been riding sportbikes for 15 years, and of course, my first helmet was a cheap HJC. Loud and crappy. Only Shoei or Arai for my head on the bike. In car? I am looking at switching to a G-Force open face helmet. Several of them are on clearance now at racerwholsale.

Whoever is running the track event (or maybe the track owner) is free to require or not require anything. My local track requires "a helmet", but most sanctioned events there either require M or SA 95 or newer (SCCA solo trials) or SA95 or newer (road racing, etc.). I'm not sure of anybody who requires a full faced helmet, but I'm sure there are some.

So yesterday i went up to Bell Motersports in Oakland. http://www.bellmotersports.com and they talked me out of the Bell SR-Pro. They really suggest not getting a openface helmet if your doing track or HPDE events because if you roll your car there will be glass everywhere and with an openface that means it will be in your eyes. They have been selling Mainly the Bell M2 for these types of events and at only $50 more that is what i went with. I would suggest not buying a helmet off the internet with out trying on first since baised off measurements i should have got a large helmet but actual fit i needed a medium.
Now to sign up for an event and improve my driving skills.

This was exactly my case. In our region I was using the open face Mag4 loaners, and the large was the best fit. When I got my M2, the medium was the better fit. Proving it is always better to try before you buy!

Racerwholesale does not sell Bell helmets anymore. If you are interested in something similar is style/design to the Mag 4, but less expensive, checkout the G Force GF750... http://www.soloracer.com/gfgf750.html
IMHO, G Force is making better helmets than Bell right now. I sell both Bell and G Force and give G Force the nod for bang-for-the-buck. I really like their Hybrid model and the new Pro Force 1.

I don't 100% agree, and its not just because I sell helmets via the web. I've sold a lot of helmets on-line and have only had 2 returns so far. Both cases were customers who had existing Bell helmets and they ordered the same size not knowing Bell changed their sizing a bit. I myself have bought about 4 helmets via the web in the past, and never had any fit problems...except for with an HJC I bought...and they do have weird sizing. The Bell and G Force charts are pretty damn accurate.
Proper FIT is the most important thing, and the charts are pretty accurate. COMFORT is important too, but for autocross you only have the helmet on for a minute or two at a time, and if you do track events, maybe 20 minutes at a time. I myself have never put a properly sized helmet on and right away said "wow, thats uncomfortable". Besides, a helmets padding tends to adapt to the shape of your head over time, so I'm not sure how trying one on can totally prove that a helmet is comfortable for your head...wearing it for 10 seconds just isn't a proper comfort test.
That being said, if you have a helmet dealer in your area, then by all means go try them on. But for many people (including myself) there is not a local place besides maybe a motorcyle shop that carries helmets. So, to try a good SA rated helmet on, I'd have to drive several hours to find a place that sells them...I'd much rather order on-line.
My $.02.

I'm noticing that 7 3/8ths is a Medium for Bell, but a Large for the G Force... Would I be able to get the medium if the large ends up being too big?

Yes, you'd be able to exchage a helmet within 30 days. I noticed you are in California, so I might recommend trying to find a local place to buy from (there have to be a ton of them out there) or ordering from someplace like subesports.com (they are in Cali). That way if you did need to return it, its going to be cheaper and quicker. I'm in Ohio, so its 4-5 days and about $10-12 for shipping.
