National RallyCross stops in Virginia (July 7-9)

The next stop of the national rallycross challenge is in Virginia. Come on out!
If you've never come out to Oakland Acres, this site is a relative "classic" in the young little world of rallycross because it has been used and improved continuously for almost a decade... visited by many of the sport's best. It is probably different from other courses you've tried because it feels like you are driving down a real dirt road instead of the usual "cones in a field". Even more fun, the lap times are a good 100-120 seconds long. And, to keep you on your toes, traction varies from oil-slick-slop to almost pavement-like grip that will make your tires screech.
Hope to see you there!

I was at the last Oakland Acres event and it is indeed a great location.
Why is this a 3-day event? Its just RallyX. Initially I was excited to come down again and run against some of these national stars, but, 3 days...? Does it typically get that many entries?

Well, there's only 2 days of real competition - Saturday and Sunday. Friday is just an optional test-n-tune.
It is 2 days instead of 1 for a couple reasons. More competitors, two different courses (I think), extra time for a "shootout" tournament after the normal rallycross is over, and I'm sure more trophy fanfare and partying.

So I've heard there are only 10 people registered so far. What the Hell is wrong with you people? Don't you want to come get embarassed by the fastest rallyx 2.5RS in NC & VA? (could be fastest on Earth, only confirmed in NC/VA so far ;) )
Pre-register and come get the whooping you so richly deserve!
Alternately, but very unlikely, you could be the first say, "I beat the undefeated rallyx 2.5RS! I am the Rallyx King!" :disco:
PS... anybody who wants to try a different angle to get people interested, please go for it. It would definitely be nice to have someone to compete against. :)

Congratulations to dowroa and solo2wrx for taking 1st and 2nd in PA (prepared AWD)! dowroa was on track for a 2nd overall until he mowed down some small trees - I mean shrubs  - after going off course. And still he won his class and was 4th overall. solo2wrx rounded out the top 5. :)
It was cool meeting the fabulous, trash-talking Audi boys - next time we need to go out to dinner or hang out by the hotel pool or something and tell lies. We didn't stay at the "official" hotel, so we were just kinda off by ourselves - and we mostly hung around the bus with the folks from our club when we were at the site. I did go get some free beer up at the paddock and socialized for a while on Saturday, although the wife kept staring at me and mouthing "we need to go." Hope you made it home ok, and sorry your car broke. :(
I extended the lead a little more in the last run group, ran a 94.0 on the very last run of the day, and took 1st overall by 27.251 sec. Wish you could've been there to see it. :p

What you also need to mention is that both Dow and I swapped the lead back and forth and that we both had our own issues with cones or inanimate objects on the side of the course. Either way Dow out drive me and we finished only 0.262 seconds apart after about 20 minutes of course time. Congrats to Fred on his domination of the event both in class and overall. The Audi boys were really cool to talk to and your car sounds very cool. Wish you could have finished out the runs. Hope you get back home and get the car back together without any trouble.

Sad that I missed it, but I do have to prepare for the move and all. Maybe next year I can come out and have fun too. :)

The car held together quite well. I think the crack that was in his front bumper is slightly larger now and he sheered off the head of a bolt on his skidplate. I believe that was the extent of the damage but I will let Brian update you on that.

The car is fine. I think this is at least the second off road excursion the car has seen in its life, and thanks to the KVM skid plate, the car was fine (the skid plate is 3/8" plate). I fell'd about 3 'shrubs' on that run, and I was cresting a hill in the top of second at that time.
Car is fine, and it cost me about 16-18 seconds in car time. Nothing that bad, and I am just glad that I was prepared for it. I don't really wanna hap on it anymore as it was mostly driver error... and my lack of rallyXing experience that caused it.
Fred DOMINATED, solo2wrx made me pay for my mistakes, and barely finished behind me. Every afternoon he was consistently faster, and I can't wait to see how much faster he is with a good suspension finally in his car (he is racing a SA car in PA, and almost won!).
Great job by all the Tarheel members (K. Allen, C. Fisher, C. Suich, E. Fisher, K. Strasel, K. Vail, L. Suich, S. Herring, C. Allen).
I think if it wasn't for the SRT-4, all the Tarheel members would have trophied!!! Gah!
Good job all, and it was a great weekend.

holy crap that looks more like a rallysprint than a rallycross.
| Fred | 07-10-2006 12:00 PM |
It's not like anything we run down here in NC, that's for sure. We try to copy it somewhat at our BMW Farm site when we can. Dave Pomfret - Oakland Acres site owner and course designer - is a freaking genius. :) He's a road racer, so most of the turns are late apexes, and some are really late apexes. If you drive it right, you're rewarded with extreme speed, but if you don't you're stuck going slow.
I refer to it as the VIR of rallyx courses.

Looks can be deceiving. It's one of the safest and tamest courses I've run... while also being one of the most fun.
Average speeds at Hastings last year were probably double ours

From what I read, speed at Hastings was comparable to a typical Kevin Allen STi course at Laurinburg.
But cowapult is correct - as long as you drive within your ability and don't do stupid stuff, OA is extremely safe. Right, dowroa?

The course is much slower then it looks, I had'nt expected to need as much first gear as I did when I ran the last D.C. Region event held there. Still very enjoyable with quick thinking moments required.
The course is much slower then it looks, I had'nt expected to need as much first gear as I did when I ran the last D.C. Region event held there. Still very enjoyable with quick thinking moments required.
my comments were more directed at its apparent length and elevation changes. it looks like fun and never said it was unsafe. i was just surprised to see what looks like an actual road and elevation changes as well as a distinct lack of cones. our courses are much shorter and more compact. but that is because of a lack of options regarding venues.
we just had a event w/a 1 mile long course this past weekend that i couldnt attend so i dont know what that was like. apparently it was a blast and they will be using it again in august. 4 runs gained about 11 minuts of seat time aparently.
From what I read, speed at Hastings was comparable to a typical Kevin Allen STi course at Laurinburg.
But cowapult is correct - as long as you drive within your ability and don't do stupid stuff, OA is extremely safe. Right, dowroa?
You are talking to a guy who typically goes off course on autoXes as well. This time, there just happen to be "shurbs" there as well.
I thought the course was awesome, and I like the dynamic nature of the course. I think all 4 runs, for me, were completely different!
Good job, and solo2wrx, get that suspension so I have to move up to M4 ;)

Wow! I would absolutely love to get into this kinda stuff! I have done autocrossing and small road courses...but this just looks awesome! Is this along the same lines as solo2 where you can basically just show up and run your car? I want to learn the basics of driving on dirt and off road! :D

If your car isn't too low or too stiff, just show up and have lots of fun.
