Window Tint curiousty
I think this was covered already, but if you have a car with tint pictures plz post them.
Well, I'm still not sure what to tint my car because I don't want to be pulled over or anything. I'm thinking 15% all around (no windshield) and %30 rear, or just 35% all around (no windshield) to make sure I'm safe from cops. Hmmmmmmmm.
More important, I'm curious about HOW can a cop pull you over for window tints? Did it ever happen to you?
I mean...some people are saying "...my state has 35% legal for window tinting."
HOW can a cop tell the difference between a 35% and a 30%, 25%, or 15% rather...? Can you argue with the cop saying that the window tint is REALLY the legal window tint (when it is not).
Hmmmmm, just wondering.
Should I be scared to tint my windows to 15% on all doors?
Will cops be on my ass...sigh

Tinting laws vary from state to state. Call a local tint shop, and they should be able to tell you what laws apply to you.

I think it's 20% all the way around. Not quite legal here, but the tint guy said it's no biggie. If stopped, I'll plead ignorance. The total bill was about $130 at Tint America.

I've posted this pic before... I'll post some better ones later today after I wash the car. I'm not sure what % mine is but its made by soloargaurd and is a step above limo tint 35%? Price was around $150

Hopefully I can help since I tint. A cop CAN pull you over just for tint. They have meters which can read the degree of tint you have by how much light passes through. In NY legal is NOW 70% on the front and a maximum of 15% on the rear. But to be honest with you, any percent over 35% is pointless. 35% is nice an classy and cuts down on the glare. 15% (or some places have 20%) gives you privacy and is a bit darker. And then there is 5% whick is limo and very dark. The kind that gets you stopped quite often(trust me, I know). Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I'm thinking 15% doors, 30% rear.
Is that risky?
35% = no risk from cops?

Doing the 35% on the rear and 15% up front might look kinda odd. Most people if they wanna be somewhat legit will do 35% on the front and 15% on the rear wondows. I have 35% on my silver RS and I like it. It looks classy and gives it a nice little touch without making it look blacked out. But I like the darker films myself. I have 15% on my Cobra and never had a problem with tickets or anything. Its when I got stupid and did limo (5%) on my other Mustang that I got tickets. But I deserved that one for just being stupid and going that dark.

I agree with ya. Do it 15% and you should be happy. Like I said, I like the darker tint. Makes the car look more sleek or something. Haha. Make sure the place you go to gives you a lifetime warranty. This way if it peels, bubbles, ar whatever, youre covered. Good luck. Oh yeah, if you ever get a tint ticket, its $30. And NO points! Big deal..haha.

Man, I think my Impreza has like 95% on all the windows. I swear it looks like they put just a plain sheet of plastic on all the windows. It was driven by an old man before me so I guess he didn't want darker tint of any kind. I gotta get my old Bonneville tinted out too. That thing has so much glass its like a freakin greenhouse. How long do you have to let the tint sit before you can open the windows? I'm asking cause the car has no AC and keeping the car closed up while driving would be mighty uncomfortable.
| Whiplash | 06-25-2001 11:46 AM |
I usually recommend waiting 3 days before you roll the windows down. But being in Florida like you are, and it being alot warmer there, you might be able to get away with opening a window in like a day or 2.

What is the best brand and model number of tint?
I am looking for quality that will last. I heard black metalic was the best. I would like more information and the manufacturer so I can buy it like any other product. What questions to you ask to see if you have an installer that will do it right? How much have most people paid?

I found an excellent installer by going to the BMW dealer and the Mercedes dealer here and talking to their sales mgrs. I asked them who did their tints and I got the name of the installer, called him, made appointment, and found out that he did all the high end cars in the area. He uses Solargard. I have had three of my cars tinted with the product (lifetime warranty) and it is very good. No problems. And I saved a lot (over $100.) by not going through a dealer.

This is 35% on the front, 5% in the back, and 20% on the hatch, but you can't see that from here. :)
Being able to roll the windows down right away depends on what film you use. Llumar is super sticky and you can roll down the windows right after it goes on. This also has its downsides too because if you want to remove it, it's probably gonna take the rear defroster with it. :)

I have 35% front and 5% rear and it is illegal here to have ANY tint on the front windows without a permit which is a sticker on the window. I've had it tinted for over two years and NEVER been pulled over, but that will vary from state to state. The only cops here that even care about it is Highway Patrol, and I just be sure to aviod being beside them.

it's 5% on everything but the drivers and passenger front windows and windshield.
I'm thinking i may do like a 50 or a 70 on the front windows to ease the transition, but I've had no problems with cops so far, in areas where i'd definitely get tickets if they cared, so I don't want to push it..
in CA, you can paint over tha back windows if you want,as long as you have 2 outside mirrors.............

I have 50% all around, that's the max legal on the back and a little darker than legal on the front, it's just about perfect for me.

I had 25% all around on a Jetta...It was perfect. Planning on doing the same with my Preza. Remember if your car is a certain color it will look darker. 25% on the silver looked amazingly dark.

yeah it will...

JenisonWRX - Did the rear tint affect the performance of your V1?
| JenisonWRX | 07-24-2001 08:12 AM |
If it has...I haven't noticed...
The V1 unit is mounted next to the mirror. The front sensor hangs down _just_ a bit past the windsheild tint. You really have to look to see it from the front...can't see it from the rear...
I still get PLENTY of warning...sometime its annoying being told so far in advance
This morning infact I detected a cop coming east bound (I going west bound) at least 3/4 of a mile away...and continued to detect him with rear sensor for a good 10 seconds after we passed.

Maybe not the best pic, but here's 15% all the way around including windshield header.
I've never had any problems with the police around here; usually they'll only ticket you for too dark a tint if you're being an ass and they can't find anything else.

so the higher the precentage the darker? ok if so would it make any sence at all to put on like a 15-25% tint?
All I want to do is reduce heat in the car and since I am going to be in georgia for school(savanah). I want to get rid of that dam sunwear on the car. Also does it look a little akward havign tints on everything but the front 2 windows?
edit: me speel gud

DoctorNick - the percentage refers to the amount of light that is let through the tint. Therefore 15% tint is darker than 25% tint. To the best of my knowledge 5% is as dark as you can go without painting the windows solid black.
Personally, I find that having the back windows dark while the fronts are not tinted looks kind of silly... but that's just me.
If you go with 15% in the back and 35% on the driver/passenger front windows, that doesn't look so bad... Look cleaner to keep it consitent all the way around I think.

Another tint question!
Sorry,
Got to plug in w/my tint question. I know that 35% is the legal limit on side windows in WA State and a 6" band width on the top of the windshield. What I want to know is can I go darker on the side "cargo area" windows and rear window on my WRX wagon? I'd like to go at least 20% on the rear and rear side so as to help w/privacy back there even though I have a cargo cover. Oh...yeah and it looks better too. ;)
Thanks,
Stephen

I kept it 38%, even all around. This is the non-reflective metallic tint. The guy at the shop assured me that it is sooo close to the 35% normal dye tint, (which fades with time) that I wouldn't get hassled. I noticed the heat reduction right away.

I have DARK all over. I Know my fronts are illegal, but have had it on my cars 20 years, and not a single problem. They're not too strict down here. If I ever get pulled over, I'll just roll down my front windows!
Also had my windshield tinted, and that is a real godsend down here (have had skin cancer several times and thought I'd try it, it's GREAT)
