Windshield glare from dashboard

I was wondering how I would get rid of the glare my dashbaord causes against my front windshield. I mean, the glare gets really bad sometimes (in the sun), and it can be distracting.
I did use some semi-gloss protectant for a while, but now all I use is the perma-plate that came with the car. I usually clean the dashboard once a month or so. Anything I can use to reduce the gloss while keeping the UV protectant?

ultra suede or alacantra
| DDMan | 05-27-2003 03:57 AM |
and I can get this where?
| cindergarden | 05-27-2003 07:39 AM |
i too need help located a black ultra suede, or synthetic suede
| TaiChih | 05-27-2003 02:13 PM |
Any large reputable fabric store will have it, like G street fabric. keep in mind that ultra suede costs $65 a yard. and you are going to cover the dash, you will need 2 yards and cut it lengthwise. You can use the other half for another dash piece or reline the door panels. relining the head liner is too excessive. Let me know if you want to buy some, I can pick it up for you and ship it to you if you really want it. They have ultrasuede light and heavy. I would suggest Heavy. they have light gray, dark gray(like the STI ver V/Vi seat), Black, Dark navy, sorry no electric blue, but I can check again

i have purchased an synthetic suede called "Suede 21" that ran me $15 a yard but tehy do not have black , ( i bought grey ) can anyone find a synthetic ?

Um....I dont want to cover my dash..I want a non-glossy protectant.
Covering your dash looks wierd IMHO...

get some polarized sunglasses.
they really cut the glare and they also help you see through the car in front of you instead of just seeing the reflections on the back glass.

I agree that covering the dash with cheap fabric is tacky, but covering it with Alcantara makes it look really upscale, plus it's very functional.
| Samirr76 | 05-27-2003 06:42 PM |
Dont use armor-all. Alot of those type products do more harm than good :o
| DDMan | 05-27-2003 07:34 PM |
Well...um, Im guessing there are no chemicals or porducts I can put on my dash to prevent the glare. I already have polarized sunglasses, and they dont help much.
I dunno, I just have never seen the purpose of dash covers...and especially on Subarus because they have a very angled dash.

Use a sponge or wax applicator when putting on the protectant so none gets on the windshield, that could cut down on the glare a bit.
| DDMan | 05-28-2003 07:21 PM |
Its not that the protectant gets on the windshield...its that the dashboard is SO DAMN SHINY that it reflects the sun off the dashboard, onto the windshield, and back at me :(

Ahh.. I see.. I would go with the Alcantara then.. The vinyl on the dash is cheap and thin anyway.. Has anyone managed to do this and make it look good?
| TanXP | 05-28-2003 07:44 PM |
Obviously your sunglasses arent very polarized. Ive got oakleys and i have no glare whatsoever. I often find myself looking straight into the sun and i have no problem.

How do u even attach this stuff to the dashboard... I mean, it looks like a giant chamois type of fabric.

The cutouts for the vents and clock are going to look soo tacky...so are the edges. I mean, You will be able to tell its been covered, and after 2-3 years it will probly start to come up.

Almost all the dash cleaners shine. Mequiars makes a vinyl cleaner and so does, i think it's called, P300. Once you put it on, let it dry - it will shine but then if you buff it with a clean cloth and that helps take the shinny coating off.
Other guys I spoke with say just use a slightly damp cloth - gives a duller sheen and doesn't attract as much dust.
As for the UV protection - my '95 Neon hasn't discolored yet so who cares. Thats my 2 cents worth.

The whole idea is to take the dash apart, remove the vents and glue it all down with extra to tuck under the vent grills. If you prep it right 3M spray adhesive 90 will not come up.;) It would be the dash vinyl that gives under it first.
| TaiChih | 05-29-2003 11:29 PM |
I'll post pics when I get my alacantra from Italy. ;)

I got in the habbit with my last car covering the dash with my leather conditioner. Some nasty looking/smelling white stuff that doesn't end up shiny at all & protects from UV rays. I figured if it can keep my expensive leather in shape, it can't do my cheap plastic much harm. Sure, not the best logic, but I had that car for about 4 years and it still presented like new... and not that new2U shiney ArmorAll look you see in all the used car lots where you're slipping off the vinyl seats and can't hold onto the steering wheel... just new.

303 Aerospace Protectant is the least glossy dressing I know of. It won't add shine, but neither will it cut down on glare. It has excellent UV protection as well. You can find it at marine and RV stores . . . not cheap, but it goes a long way. Short of recovering the dash as others have suggested, I'd say 303 and a better pair of polarized glasses are your best bet for reducing glare.

I use 303 on my dash. Yes, it's probably the least glossy protectant, but it's still glossier than not using any. It usually bothers me for a week or two after each 303 application. Ugh.

How often should UV portectant be applied
I care for my car alot, so I usually do it twice a month...could I go a few months without doing it and just wipe off the dust?

Typically, 1-2 months. I do it less frequently than that though. Glare annoys me. :p

does the dash come apart very easily? or is it a pita to do?
anyone?
anyone?
| TaiChih | 05-30-2003 01:41 PM |
The dash is a PITA to take apart, but not impossible. Just remember where you got all the bolts and screws from. But, to do it right, everything is a PITA;)

I've never tried it, but I once read a suggestion to dilute 303 with water for less gloss. I have no clue how well it might work . . .

when I was in ticket mitigation court one day trying to get my ticket reduced, this asian lady tried to tell the judge that she was speeding because glare off of her dashboard was restricting her from seeing both the speed limit signs and her speedometer
i heard some great excuses there...

Just do what I did...wait a while. Soon your dash will have enough dirt to matte the shine and if you don't want it to look dirty, then just wipe away the dirt with a clean cloth. :D Seriously.

Covering dash with ultrasuede

I did it without taking the whole dash apart. Getting a good fit around the silver vent rings and silver center console parts is easy, as they are removeable. (The silver vent rings can be snapped out by careful prying.) The defroster vents require some careful cutting and glueing.
If the job is done carefully it will look very good. Not perfect, but I get lots of admiring comments.

alcantara dash

I glued it down with 3m heavy duty spray. The toughest places are the concave areas like on either side of the instrument binnacle. I have to reglue it a couple times to get it to stay, as it would loosen when hot. Search for my other post on this subject.
I made a cut around the airbag. I was not comfortable trusting it to rip.
